Wallingford Public Schools - HIGH SCHOOL COURSE OUTLINE Course Title: Graphic Communication Course Number: 7173 Department: Career and Technical Education Grade(s): 9-12 Level(s): Academic Credit: ½ Course Description Utilizing multiple software applications, scanners, digital cameras, and laser and color printers, students will learn how ideas are communicated through words and illustrations to create a graphic message. A variety of input devices will be used to design and produce graphic messages such as posters, letterheads, business cards, and brochures. Students will be exposed to areas of web page design including HTML coding and other web design software. 1.0 Principles of Design A graphic design solution can carry and convey many different meanings and elicit different emotions. Graphic design is a visual language. Graphic designs use various principles to impact a design with a desired effect in mind. LEARNING OBJECTIVES The student will: 1.1 Identify the primary principles of design: unity, variety, hierarchy and proportion. 1.2 Identify the support principles of design: scale, balance, rhyme and repetition and proximity. 1.3 Recognize the elements of design: shape, size, line, color, typography and texture. 1.4 Evaluate several graphic works to differentiate between effective and ineffective design. How do graphic images communicate ideas and emotions visually? How do the principles of design affect all forms of graphic images? 2.0 Use of HTML Coding for Web Page Design A graphic design solution can carry and convey many different meanings and elicit different emotions. Graphic communication is the design and creation of graphic messages with the intent of communicating ideas and thoughts from person to person. Web pages are derived from the specific internet language known as Hyper Text Markup Language. (HTML) 2.1 Identify the origins of HTML coding. 2.2 Investigate the five basic components of HTML coding: <HTML> <Heading> <Body> <Title> Ending Tags 2.3 Apply the five basic components to create a web page. 2.4 Evaluate the uses of more complex components of HTML coding: Background changes Inserting images Creating hyperlinks Creating mailtos Creating lists Inserting text 2.5 Apply more complex components of HTML to an existing web page. 2.6 Create a personalized web page implementing the more complex components of HTML coding.
