StacksUserServices:CirculationDeskImplementationPlan Introduction Forseveralyears,theUniversityLibraryworkedtore imaginethecentralstackswiththeintentof makingthespaceamoreaccessibleenvironment.unfortunately,thebiggestobstacletothat improvementhasbeenthestacksthemselves.constructedasconcentratedstorageforbooks,the physicalcharacteristicsofthefirstfiveadditionsarehighlyutilitarianandlacktheflexibilitytobe retrofittedintoeithercodecompliantorcomfortablelocationsforextendeduse.thesixthaddition holdsgreaterpromise,butthepresenceofcompactshelvinginthatadditiongivesitthecapacitytohold almostthesamevolumeofmaterialsastheotherfiveadditionscombined.consequently,eliminating shelvinginthatspacecarriesadditionalsignificantcosts.whilethesefactorsmakeareconfigurationof thestoragespaceimpractical,theyshouldnotimpedeeffortstomakethestacksamoreinvitingspace. ThelargestimpedimenttothisistheCirculationDeskitselfandthephysicalbarrierthatitposesto accessingthemainstacks. Atthetimethisreconfigurationwasinitiallyproposed,themainservicepointdissuadedusersfromselfserviceandwasasignificantcostcenter requiringthestaffingofmultipleservicepoints(turnstile, Stackscirculationdesk,andMainCirculationDesk)withinathirtyfootradius.Withtheadditionof centralizedreserveservicestothislocationtheuniversitylibrarymustrethinkoperationsand reconfigurethedesk/entranceinordertomaximizeresourcesandprovidebetterservicetousers. Moreover,suchareconfigurationholdsthelong termpromiseofreducingthenumberofservicepoints requiredtooverseecasfunctions.inthelongterm,thepotentialmayexisttoconsolidatesomeofthe circulation,reserves,andbillingoperations,especiallyasdemandsforspaceincamgrow.central AccessServicespersonnelbelievethatanewdeskwouldimprovethemanagementoftheseservice pointsandprovideformorecomprehensivecoverageduringthelibrary soperatinghours.by reconfiguringthedesk,theuniversitylibrarycouldprovideamorewelcomingentrance,economizeon personnel,andprovidebetterwayfindingservicestothoseenteringthemainstacks.tosupportthe findingsofthestacksservicesplanningteamreportanditsendorsementbythelibrary sexecutive Committee,wesubmitthisimplementationplan. ProposedFloorPlan TheprimaryproblemcausedbytheCirculationDeskisthecircuitousmannerinwhichitforcesusersto enterthemainstacks.thisreconfigurationproposesthattheuniversitylibraryopenupthepassage betweentheinformationdeskandthemainstacks,includingtheremovalofasignificantportionofthe existingcirculationdesk.giventheuniversitylibrary songoingprojecttocreateastacksreference Collection,thiswouldeaseuseofthatcollectionforreferencepurposes.Openingupthispassagewill requiretheuniversitylibrarytorelocatethecomputerslocatedimmediatelyinfrontofthecirculation Deskandremoveexistingwiringfromthatlocation,aprojectlong overduegiventheadvancedageof thenetworkinginthatlocation.inordertomakespaceforpubliccomputingthatisarguablystill necessary,theuniversitylibrarymustrelocatethosecomputerswithintheroom.themostlogical
locationgiventhestateddesireofmakingthespacemoreaccommodatingforusersandreinvestingin theaestheticvalueoftheroomisthespacecurrentlyoccupiedbyportionsofthecardcatalog.thiswill, inturn,providespaceforadditionalstoragelockersforusers,updatedwiringforallcomputinginthe space,andthefreedomtoincludeadditionalcomfortableseatinginaroomthatwillbevisuallymuch moreopenandaccommodatingforourusers. TheNewCirculationDeskandCirculationServices Repurposingthecurrentdeskandlocationwillbethemostcosteffectivewaytoimplementthe reconfiguration.thecurrentdeskwillbesplitintotwoseparate,equallysizeddesks,withoneside(to thenorth)forcirculationservicesandtheotherside(tothesouth)forreserves.theswingingdoors currentlyatthedeskwillbemovedtoallowstafftomoveeasilyfromthecirculationsideofthedeskto thereservesside.theentranceandexittothestackswillbeinthemiddleofthetwodesks.(see attacheddiagram),withthepatronscaninstationlocatedontherightofthisarea.asecuritygatewill alsobelocatedinthisarea.computerswillbelocatedalongthefrontofeachdesktoservepatronsas theyarrive.flexibilityandtheabilityforgrowthwillbebuiltintoeachdeskbyallowingforadditional computerports.alower,accessiblesectionwillalsobebuiltintothedeskreconfigurationinorderto ensurethatthelibrarycanadequatelyserveallpatrons.thebookdropwillbemovedfromitscurrent locationonthenorthsideofthedesktoasimilarlocationonthesouthside.abankofself service lockerswithelectroniclockswillbelocatedonthenorthsideofthecirculationdeskandthesouthside ofthereservesdesk.reconfigurationofthedeskwillincludereplacingtheoldlaminatecountertop withacountertopthatmatchestheinformationdesk scountertop. Relocatingtheholdshelvesfromthecurrentlocationintotheareathatpresentlyservesastheentryto thestackswillallowforadequatespaceforallcirculationandill/ddholditems.itwillalsoenable betterorganizationandeaseofusetomoreefficientlyserveourpatrons.unused,cantileveredshelving unitsfromtheofficeoffacilitiesinventorywillbeusedforthispurpose,andtheexistinglockerswillbe relocatedintothemainstacksworkareasforusebystaffandstudentassistants. Whilethebackdeskcouldalsobenefitfromremodelingtoimprovefunctionalityandwasincludedin theongoingdiscussionuntilrecently,,itistherecommendationofthisgroupthatthedesknotbe modifiedaspartofthisinitialrenovationinordertocontrolcosts.thetwoexistingcomputerswillbe usedtocheckoutitemstopatronsexitingthemainstacks,andthecallslipstationwillremaininits currentlocationfornow,untilitcanberelocatedtoamorefunctionalpositionbehindthebackdesk. Moreadequateshelvingandstoragespaceisneededinthislocation,butduetospacelimitationsthis willbeaddressedatanothertime. ConstructionAssociatedwiththeReconfiguration Thecirculationdeskinroom204MainLibrarywillrequiresubstantialrenovationtoimplementthe relocationofthemainstacksentrance.afourfootsectioninthemainnorth/southcounterandcabinet willberemovedtoprovideanew4 entranceintomainstacks.alldataandpowerconduitsandwiring
willneedtoberemovedandreroutedtothenewlycreatednorthandsouthdesks.the3msecuritygate thatwillberemovedfromroom306mainlibrarywhenthelislibrarycloseswillbeinstalledinthe openingby3mtechnicians.theexistingwoodgatesinthenorthandsouthsectionsofthedeskwillbe relocatedtothecentralcorridorcreatedwithnewlyfabricatedandinstalledwoodshelvingthatwill complementtheexistingdeskdesign.theopeningattheoldgatelocationswillbefilledinwithnewly constructedcabinetrytomatchtheexistingdeskfinishesanddetails.finally,anaccessible6 service counterwillbeconstructedinthenorthdesk.thetwonewlycreatedl shapeddeskswillhavenewsolid surfacecountertopsthatmatchtherecentlyconstructedinformationdeskwithinroom204.theold pneumaticpagingsystemwillberemovedandsavedforfuturepreservationandexhibit.when reconfigured,thesouthservicedeskwillprovidetwowalkupstationsandonesmallprocessingstation. ExistingmetalpatronlockerswillberepurposedforCentralAccessServicesstaffneeds.Theshelvingin 206willcreateabarriertokeeppatronsandstafffromexitingMainStacksthrough206. Room204willreceivesubstantialreconfigurationtoprovideanenhancedpatronservicesarea.The implementationteamconcludedthattheinformationdeskshouldstayinitscurrentconfigurationand locationinroom204.theremovalofthecardcatalogfromroom204willrequirethatcabinetsinthe2 nd floornorthandsouthcorridorsbereorganizedandthecatalogwillbeproperlysequencedonthe2 nd and3 rd floorcorridors.thepubliccomputerscurrentlylocatedinthemiddleoftheroomwillbe relocatedtothenortheastandsoutheastcornersofroom204.thecurrent30 x144 tableswillbe switchedwithsomeofthe30 x72 tablestoprovideapproximatelytencomputerstationsinthe northeastcornerandtwelvecomputerstationsinthesoutheastcorner.theprinterwillberelocatedto thenortheastcornerareaacrossfromtheinformationdesk.theexistingdatalinesinthemiddleof204 willberemovedandthepowerredistributedfortheloungeseatingarrangement.loungefurniturefrom LISLibrarywillberepurposedinthecenterareabetweentheCirculationDeskandtheInformationdesk. Therewillneedtobeamediumlevelofhousekeepingperformedastheroomisreconfigured.Thewood panelingthatlinesthewallsinroom204willbeevaluatedforextensivecleaningandoiling.thewindow blindswillbecleanedonthesouthsideandthenorthsideofthespace.theexistinglightingfixtureswill
becleanedandre lampedtoprovideimprovedlightinglevelsinthespace.therewillbeinteriorsignage upgradesforthespacetoimprovetheclarityofpatronservicepointswithintheroom. ITAspectsofProject Theproposedreconfigurationofthestacksentrancewillrequiresubstantialchangesinpower distributionandcomputernetworkingintheexistingcentralcirculationdesk.allpoweranddataforthe circulationdeskisfedthroughtheflooratthecenteroftheexistingdesk.sincetheproposeddesign callsforthisportionofthedesktobeopenedasthemainentrancetostacks,theexistingpowerand datawillneedtoberelocated.citesprovidedacostestimatefortherelocationofdata,telephone jacks,andassociatedcabling.f&swillneedtoremoveexistinginfrastructureandinstallnewconduit andboxesforthedataandtelephonejacks.f&swillalsoneedtoinstallnewelectricaldistributionfor thereconfiguredcirculationdesk. Therearetwenty onepublicaccessmachinesandonepublicprinterinroom204.mostofthese machinesarelocatedinthecenteroftheroomontalltables.proposedreconfigurationortheroom callsforthesemachinestoberelocatedtothesidesoftheroominaroughlysymmetricallayout. Providingdataandpowerforthismovewouldrequiretheinstallationofflushmountedboxesinthe floorasdescribedinthecitesestimate.f&swouldneedtoinstallthenewboxesandassociated conduit.theywouldalsoneedtodistributepowertotheselocations. CITESwillpullalldataandtelephonecablingaswellasterminateandtestalljacks.Noadditional networkswitchequipmentwillberequired.
