GOETHE INTERNATIONAL CHARTER SCHOOL ENROLLMENT INFORMATION 2015-2016 Enrollment for all grades at Goethe International Charter School is by random, public lottery. Any student in the State of California is eligible to attend Goethe International Charter School. There are no entrance tests, fees or requirements. Open Enrollment Goethe International Charter School will accept applications for the 2015-16 school year beginning December 1, 2014, through March 27, 2015, at 4:00 PM. All completed applications submitted before the deadline are eligible for the enrollment lottery. Applications are accepted after the lottery deadline; those applications are placed on a waitlist on a first come, first served basis. Application forms can be downloaded and printed from our website, www.goethecharterschool.org. They will also be available in our office beginning December 1 st and at all of our enrollment events. Prospective parents can learn more about Goethe International Charter School by taking a school tour. Please check the website for dates and times and schedule an appointment. School Tours are offered on campus, located on the southeast corner of the Marina del Rey Middle School campus. The GICS entrance gate is located near the Westlawn and Havelock Avenue intersection. The meeting will include a 45-minute presentation that reviews our school s philosophy, curriculum, and history, followed by a question and answer session. A tour gives parents the opportunity to visit our classrooms and watch the Goethe vision translated into day-to-day practice. School tours are by appointment only and are limited to 28 persons. Sign up for the tours are done through the school website. Lottery Drawing The Enrollment Lottery will be held on April 14, 2015, at 6:00 PM in the school Multipurpose room (MPR). You do NOT need to be present at the lottery in order to be offered a spot in the school. We accept applications on a first-come, first-serve basis after the lottery application deadline. Applicants who were wait-listed in the 2014-15 lottery must re-apply in order to be eligible for the 2015-16 enrollment lottery. Preference is given to the children of founding parents, siblings of current students and to the children of faculty and staff. Siblings are defined as any two students who share a legal parent/guardian (legal documentation is required). A secondary level of preference is offered to students who qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch, and who reside within the boundaries of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Applications received after the deadline will not be processed for the lottery. These applicants are placed on the bottom of the waitlist, after the lottery, in first-come, first served order. Within 5 business days of the conclusion of the lottery, families of students that were selected are notified by email and/or phone. Families have 15 calendar days to accept or reject the offer of a spot for their child to become a student at Goethe International Charter School. You must formally accept the offer of the spot by completing the enrollment packet. A completed enrollment packet must be on file in the school office in order to protect your spot. After The Lottery In order to secure your child s spot in Goethe, you need to complete an enrollment packet. The enrollment packet has many forms that must be completed, which give the school vital safety and family information about your child. All families who accept a spot must complete and return an enrollment packet within 15 calendar days of the lottery in order to safeguard their child s spot. Enrollment packets are available at the office (see address listed above) during regular school hours (7:30 AM 4:30 PM) beginning April 21, 2015. Families who do not complete and return an enrollment packet within 15 days from April 21, 2015 will risk losing their spot at Goethe. Lottery Procedure for April 14, 2015, 6:00 PM Lottery Preparation 1. All applications received prior to the lottery deadline are included in the lottery. 2. All applications with a preference have the eligibility of the preference verified. 3. All applicants will have a label (2 x 4 ) printed with the following info. a. Name b. Grade applying for c. Preference (if applicable) d. If a sibling is also applying, the siblings name and grade level 4. Labels are separated by grade level and preference. 5. Charts are created for each grade level. There will be a numbered space for each label. Spaces will be numbered with available spaces and wait list spaces. During the lottery 1. There are three staff members and one board member present: a. Gwenis Laura, Executive Director b. (Board Member) c. Quynh Tran, Business Office Manager d. Betty Brown Administrative Assistant 2. Staff members roles: a. Gwenis reads out loud each name for the preference group being drawn and drops it in the bowl. b. Board Member pulls out each name and reads it out loud. c. Betty takes each name and attaches to the poster board in the order it was drawn. d. Quynh records, holds original applications and answers questions. 3. Welcome by Executive Director a. Lottery process: i. Names are read for the preference group being drawn. ii. Names are drawn and placed on the poster board for 5 th, 4 th, 3 rd, 2 nd, 1 st, TK & Kindergarten. iii. Each grade will have a lottery for staff, founders and siblings. A weighted system will be used for LAUSD residents and free or reduced-price lunch students. Non-LAUSD residents receives last preference. iv. Once a name is pulled it will go on the poster in the order it was pulled. b. Accepted applicants will be notified within 5 business days via phone or email. c. Applicants not accepted may check the school s website to find their place on the waitlist. 4. A weighted system for LAUSD residents and free or reduced-price lunch students d. Free or reduced residing outside the LAUSD boundaries e. Those residing outside the LAUSD boundaries 6. We cannot offer a preference to students who have a sibling pulled in the lottery at the time of the lottery. Those siblings will be moved to the top of the waiting list for their grade, in the order they are pulled. 7. Each name will be drawn. After all seats have been filled in a grade, the names will be placed on the waiting list in the order the names are drawn. Once the last name has been pulled the Lottery is officially concluded. 8. Enrollment packets will be emailed beginning April 21, 2015. Paper copies are available if needed in the GICS office. Enrollment packets are due no later than May 1, 2015.
