7 TPAs The California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA) incorporates four performance tasks that increase in complexity but not necessarily in difficulty. These tasks are intended to be completed as you progress through your teacher preparation program. Each teacher preparation program decides how and where each task is embedded in the program coursework and/or related program activities. Taken as a whole, the four performance tasks will ask you to demonstrate that you know how to: find out information about a given class and about specific focus students within the class such as an English learner or a student with identified special needs plan appropriate subject-specific instruction for all students in alignment with stateadopted K-12 student academic content standards and/or frameworks implement the instruction according to the lesson plans you have developed, and reflect upon the outcomes of that instruction, including evidence of student learning design and implement assessment activities appropriate to the lesson and to the learners, and use the assessment results to inform the next round of lesson planning reflect upon your own professional growth as a member of the teaching profession The TPA and is designed to be both formative and summative, in that the TPA process will provide you with formative feedback during each task about your performance, and, at the conclusion of the four tasks, will serve as a summative criterion for recommendation for the teaching credential. All multiple and single subject teacher candidates must successfully complete the TPA in order to be recommended for a preliminary teaching credential. All materials and information necessary for you to complete the CalTPA are available and are public. You will have the opportunity to review the four tasks and their scoring rubrics before you begin the assessment. The formative aspect of the CalTPA system allows you to confer with, collaborate with, and receive support from both instructors and peers while preparing for the CalTPA. To complete the assessment, however, you must submit an individual response to each task that represents your own unaided work. You will submit your completed TPAs as they are each completed to the Credential Analyst. You can submit Tasks 1 (Subject-Specific Pedagogy), 2 (Designing Instruction) and 3 (Assessing Learning) electronically. Be sure to scan the student work to send with Task 3. For
8 Task 4, you can submit the response document and scan and send the student work and classroom diagram. You must turn in 2 copies of your teaching video on CDs to the Credential Analyst. The Credential Analyst will then send the Task to one of our outside assessors who will score the Task. Tasks 1, 2 and 3 can be sent electronically, while Task 4 must be mailed. The Credential Analyst will record your score and mail the score results to your home address. It is imperative that we have your correct home address so that the score results reach you. If you do not pass a Task, please contact the Credential Analyst for a list of avenues for help. You can find more information and the materials for the Tasks at: You can weekly tips and other information about the TPAs from the CalTPA website: Novice Teaching Overview First Quarter Novice Teaching Experience The Credential Candidate s initial field experience will consist of observation and participation activities that serve to introduce Credential Candidates to life in today s classrooms. These activities also provide an opportunity for Credential Candidates to observe and analyze the complexity of working with students from diverse backgrounds. University coursework is designed to complement the observation process to provide a rich introduction to the schools in our community and the teaching experience. (10 hours minimum) Second Quarter Novice Teaching Experience During the second field experience, which is completed during two half-day visits weekly for 10 weeks, the Credential Candidate will continue to conduct field observations in addition to actually working with students one-on-one, in small groups, and the class as a whole. University coursework continues to build on observations as well as design lessons to develop the Candidate s understanding of instructional practices. (80 hours minimum) Third Quarter Novice Teaching Experience During the third field experience, the Credential Candidate will begin the full-time Novice Teaching process. The Novice Teacher will be assigned to a classroom on a fulltime (4 days/week) schedule for 10 weeks. The Novice Teacher will work closely with a Cooperating Teacher to gradually assume the responsibilities of teaching and caring for the students, including the development of daily lessons, unit plans, and classroom management plans. The experience culminates with the Novice Teacher performing a minimum two-week takeover of all classroom activities. (240 hours minimum)
9 Fourth Quarter Novice Teaching Experience The fourth field experience is a second full-time Novice Teaching placement (4 days/week for 10 weeks) in a different grade level, where the Credential Candidate will take on increasing responsibilities for all aspects of preparation, instruction, and care of the students. This final placement is intended to be more intense than the previous placement and will culminate in a minimum three-week takeover of all classroom responsibilities. (240 hours minimum) Evaluating your Courses You will have two opportunities to evaluate your courses Midquarter eval Final Eval The final evals entered for data, given to the Program Chair to review and then the raw data and a transcript of the written comments are given to the faculty. Student Evaluations Completed by your faculty Submitted to the Office of the Registrar Mailed to you when your evals for all your classes for that quarter have been submitted. You can check your credits on MyAntioch. Leave of Absence (LOA) A student may request an authorized Leave of Absence (LOA) form AULA for personal reasons subject to approval by the Program Chair and the Registrar. This allows the student to leave school for a term while still maintaining an official connection with the University. While on LOA, the student keeps his/her and stays on University mailing lists. A student on LOA does not receive academic advising and student work is not processed. A student cannot graduate from AULA nor can they receive credit for any outstanding coursework while on LOA. Students desiring an LOA must complete an official Application for Non-Enrolled Student Status Form, obtain their advisor s signature on the form and submit the form to the Office of the Registrar. Students on Financial Aid are required to have the signature of the Financial Aid Office as well. Students who leave school without filing this form are withdrawn from the University and must reapply if they wish to return. A new form is needed for each term. Enrollment Maintenance Status (EMF) Enrollment Maintenance Status is designed for students who, while not enrolled for new course work during the current term, wish to maintain enrollment status in order to: Complete degree requirements, including master s thesis and prior learning Complete work from the previous quarter (for classes that received an IP) Make corrections necessary for graduation, after the final quarter of residency
10 EMF entitles the student to advising and to certify to other institutions that the student is participating in a degree program. Students wishing to take a term on EMF must submit an Application for Non-Enrolled Student Status Form with their advisor s signature to the Office of the Registrar during the registration period for the term and pay the EMF fee. Children s Library Located on the 2 nd floor in room A2127. Available to all Education Department students. Houses picture books, chapter books, reference items, test prep guides (CBEST, CSET and RICA) and textbooks. Can check out books for a two week period. Contact the Library to renew books. Advising You will be provided with a schedule of classes for each quarter. Academic Advising done by faculty. Credential advising by Credential Analyst. Registration Registration begins week 9 of the quarter before the one that you will be registering for. If you have any questions about the classes that you should register for, please contact your Faculty advisor. You will register for classes online using MyAntioch. The directions for registering will be provided in an from the Office of the Registrar, but you can also pick up directions from the Program Coordinator. If you are still experiencing challenges with online registration, you are welcome to go to the Office of the Registrar where they will walk you through the process. You will have approximately 3 weeks to register without being assessed late fees. The last day to register will be the first day of classes and a late fee will be assessed. The add-drop period lasts for the first 2 weeks of the quarter. To make schedule adjustments after the first 2 weeks requires a petition from the Office of the Registrar. The Registrar will review your petition and either grant or deny it.
