Chiba University Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science Doctoral Program for International Frontiers October 2015 Admission (2 nd Selection) April 2016 Admission (1 st Selection) The Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science opens a specialized doctoral program, Doctoral Program for International Frontiers, at Department of Nanomaterial Science, and Department of Image and Materials Science, and invites applications for this Doctoral Program, as outlined in the table below. Doctoral Program for International Frontiers has been established in 2009 in cooperation with Global Center-of-Excellence (COE) Program, Advanced School of Organic Electronics. The program will provide education based on global excellent research and international education at laboratories and seminars abroad as well as in Chiba University. The program will cultivate the ability and potential of the graduate students both in basic and applied fields based on the various values as well as on deeper knowledge of fundamental science. It is possible for them to obtain the degree by taking the subjects and completing a doctor s dissertation in English. The financial support of living for the graduate students is offered by employment as research assistants (RA) on a global standard. 2. Required Qualifications The asterisked deadline of September 2015 in the following (1) (8) concerns applicants who will enter the graduate school in October 2015. For applicants proposing to enter from April 2016 the deadline is March 2016. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements. (1)They must have a master s degree or professional degree, or expect to obtain one by September 2015*. (2)They must have been granted, or expect to obtain by September 2015*, a degree corresponding to a master s degree or a professional degree in a foreign country. (3)They must have taken a correspondence course offered in Japan by a foreign school, and been awarded or expect to obtain by September 2015*, a degree corresponding to a master s degree or professional degree. (4)They must have completed a foreign graduate school s course, conducted at an educational institution in Japan that is an accredited part of the educational system of the foreign country concerned and also recognized by Japan s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports Science and Technology, and consequently been granted a degree corresponding to a master s degree or a professional degree or expect to receive such a degree by September 2015*. (5)The applicant has been granted, or expects to be granted by September 2015*, a degree corresponding to a master s degree, through course completion at the United Nations University as prescribed in Article 1-(2) of the Act on special Measures Incidental to Enforcement of the Agreement between the United Nations and Japan regarding the Headquarters of the United Nations University (Act No. 72 of 1976), which was established under the December 11, 1972 resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations. (6)The applicant has completed a course study at a school outside of Japan, in an educational institution as designated above in (4) of the required qualifications, or in the United Nations University, has passed the examination and screening equivalent to those prescribed in Article 16-2 of the Standards for Establishment of Graduate Schools, and has been recognized as having academic abilities at least equivalent to that of a Master s degree holder, or is expected to be recognized by September 2015*, and has been recognized by this school as having academic abilities at least equivalent to that of a Master s degree holder. (7)The applicant meets either of the following qualifications designated in Ministry of Education Bulletin No. 118 of September 1, 1989. 1 After graduating from college, the applicant engaged in at least two years of research at a university, research center, etc. and, based on the resulting research achievements, etc., has been recognized, by the graduate school of science in question, as having scholarly attainments that are at least the equivalent of those of individuals who have a master s degree or a professional degree. 2 After completing a 16-year course of study in the educational institutions of a foreign country, or after reviewing, in Japan, the subjects in the correspondence education conducted by a foreign school and thereby completing a 16-year course of study in the educational institutions of the related foreign country, the applicant engaged in at least two years of research at a university, research center, etc., and, based on the resulting research achievements, etc., has been recognized, by the graduate school of science in question, as having scholarly attainments that are at least the equivalent of those of individuals who have a master s degree or a professional degree. (8)Based on an Examination, conducted by the Graduate School of Engineering, of the applicant s qualifications to enter this school, the applicant has been judged to have scholastic attainments that are at least the equivalent of those of individuals with a master s degree or a professional degree, and is also 24 years of age or will turn 24 by September 2015*. *With regard to Qualifications (6), (7) or (8), please see 15 Procedure for Judging the Applicant s Qualifications to Take the Entrance Examination. It is necessary for them to be judged the Applicant s Qualifications to take the Entrance Examination in advance. 3. Mailed applications must arrive by the same deadline as above. It is necessary for them to be judged the Applicant s Qualifications to take the Entrance Examination in advance. Application Procedures Applicants are to submit all of the required documents listed below to Academic Affairs Desk (Gakumu) at the Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science, by the application deadline. Regarding to Application Form and Admission Ticket for Examination (as in 1 below), there are two different sheets of Form for October Admission A and April Admission B. Be careful to use the correct Form depending on your desired application. Other documents are all in common. Please download to use the documents of A, B, A B, C, D, E, F, G and H from the Graduate School s website. (Do not separate these forms of Admission Ticket for Examination from Application Form.) Application for October Admission A and A B Application for April Admission B and A B Applicants residing out of Japan Candidate s Number should be advised by Email instead of receiving the Admission Ticket by mail. Be sure to fill in Email address on Application Form A or B. Please contact us by Email or telephone in case Application Number will NOT be received. 2Examination Fee It is NOT necessary for Graduate Students at Chiba University. Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho/MEXT) Scholarship students need NOT pay the Examination fee. Please Applicants residing in Japan Admission Ticket for Examination A or B should be received by mail following their applications. The Examination fee should be paid ahead of the application deadline Japan time (See section 3). No refunds will be made. An official transcript of undergraduate courses Affix 2 identical-frontal photographs from the waist up of yourself, without a hat, taken in the 3 months prior to application; one to the prescribed place on Application Form and the other on Admission Ticket for Examination A or B.(Photo size: 6 cm long x 4 cm wide) Prepared by the president or registrar of the last university attended. Applicants who submit a prospective Master s Degree Certificate must submit a Master s Degree Certificate following completion of their master s program. Applicants with a master s degree Both of those below should be provided. 1. A copy set of the master s thesis 2. An abstract C written in 1,000 words or less Applicants without a master s degree Those should be provided as below. 1. A Report on Research Activities D written in 1,000 words or less 2. A List of Research Achievements E should be also attached if they have any research publications or other such documents to their credit. Applicants should submit their research proposal on the form prescribed by this school F. For applicants who wish to remain employed while participating in the Doctoral Program, it is desirable that they submit an Authorization to Take the Examination (a form prescribed by this school G) from the head of their unit at work. Non-Japanese applicants are to submit the additional documents listed below. 9Curriculum Vitae Use the form prescribed by this school H. 10Certificate of Residence (Juminhyo-no-Utsushi) Applicants residing in Japan A certificate of residence (Juminhyo-no-Utsushi). This document must be obtained at the city, ward, town or village office in which the applicant resides. Photocopy is not accepted. This must include information as below. 1. In case you wish to submit an original copy which cannot be reissued, be sure to consult the Academic Affairs Desk before applying. 5. Selection Method, Examination Date and Time (1) Selection Method Applicants will be selected based on an Examination (an oral interview) and their transcripts. See below. (2) Examination Oral interview: It will include the applicant s master s thesis, research proposal F and others. (3) Date and Time Applicants residing in Japan Admissions Examination Date and Time October 2015 Admission (2 nd Selection) 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 25, 2015 April 2016 Admission (1 st Selection) Applicants residing out of Japan It will be settled as previously arranged by taking the applicants convenience into consideration. Note: In Doctoral Program for International Frontiers, there are cases where some applicants are exempted from the oral interview mentioned above by the documentary screening. Please refer directly to your desired supervisor for more information or questions. (4) Examination Venue It will be held at Nishi-Chiba Campus of Chiba University (as in (1) of Section 6.) 6. Precautions (1)Necessary information about the Examination and a campus map of Examination rooms will be posted at 10:00 A.M. on the day before the Examination, on the notice board in front of Science and Technology Building No. 1 (Shizen Kagaku-kei Sogo Kenkyuto 1). (2)Please be sure to have your Admission Ticket for Examination A or B with you during Examination hours. (3)Changing the contents of submitted documents following the completion of application procedures will not be allowed. However, if you change your address following application, please provide written notification to that effect (the form to be used is optional). (4)Once it is paid, the Examination fee will not be refunded under any circumstances. It will be, however, refunded to the applicants who paid it by mistake, and besides, didn t apply for the admission, in full if they finish the prescribed procedures for the refund by 5:00 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2016. (5)A word processor may be used to fill in the forms, prescribed by this school, that are to be submitted. (6)In addition to being used for selecting applicants, personal information collected in the applicant selection process may be used for such purposes as managerial and administrative activities, academic guidance activities, and activities related to research and study on applicant selection methods. (7)On the entrance Examination day, there happen to be some traders concerned with soliciting for notice of the exam results by telegram or the sales of goods around the nearby station or campus. Those acts bear no relation to Chiba University. You must be careful not to be in troubled by being charged unreasonably for them. Chiba University will take no responsibility for it even if such an accident happens. In addition to it, for the applicants who would successfully passed, a Notification of Acceptance and the documents related to the entrance procedures will be sent to the address written on the Application Form A or B. No telephone or email inquiry concerning results is accepted. 9. Entrance Procedures (1)Period Admissions Entrance Procedures Date October 2015 Admission Thursday, September 17, 2015-Friday, September 18, 2015 April 2016 Admission Saturday, March 26, 2016-Sunday, March 27, 2016 The detailed information will be sent: promptly by EMS or a simple registered mail with the Notification of Acceptance, for October 2015 Admission applicants accepted. in early March, 2016 by EMS or a simple registered mail, for April 2016 Admission applicants accepted. (2)Expenses Admission Fee: 282,000 yen (Current Chiba University Graduate Students do not need to pay the admission fee.) Tuition Fee: 260,400 yen/each semester (annual total tuition: 520,800 yen) (1) Applicants of April Admission should pay the tuition for Spring semester in May, and those of October Admission should pay it for Fall semester in November, by a Standing Order, Koza Hikiotoshi which is available in the banking systems. But from the following semester, it should be paid in April for every Spring semester, and in October for every Fall semester, by a Standing Order, Koza Hikiotoshi. The detailed information on a standing order, Koza Hikiotoshi will be given at the time of the entrance procedure. (2) If the tuition or others be revised, the new tuition or others will go into effect as of the time of the revision. 7

That insurance covers injuries incurred in class, school events, extracurricular activities and commuting to school. It also covers property damage or injuries to other people. The new insurance premiums will go into effect as of the time of the revision if the insurance premiums have been revised. Completion Conditions A term required to complete the Doctoral Program is three years. It is the necessary conditions to complete the Program that you must be registered for three years or more, and also take fourteen credits or more which are provided by Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science, and pass the both the inspection of a doctor s dissertation and the final Examination. 11. Early Completion A student may shorten the period required to complete the Doctoral Program to a minimum of one year if the student has achieved exceptional research results while enrolled in the Program or if the student, through his/her employment, etc., already possesses research achievements that are at least the equivalent of those required to complete the Program in three years. 12. Night Lecture Program In the Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science s Doctoral Program, students may, if it is deemed especially necessary for their education, take lectures and conduct research at night or at other appropriate times. Applicants wishing such an arrangement should consult in advance with a supervisor in their educational field and then expressly state those wishes in their application for admission. 13. System for Long-Term Completion For individuals who, because they are employed, etc., are restricted in the number of units they can obtain, and in the time that they can devote to receiving research guidance, over the course of a year or a semester, and who therefore believe that they cannot complete this Program unless they remain in it for longer than the standard number of years required to complete it (three years), there is a system whereby they can obtain a degree if they apply for an extension, are judged by the university to merit it, and then methodically complete the Program over a period of up to six years. Regarding the tuition of individuals thus recognized as long-term students, the total amount of tuition fees for the three years (six semesters) usually required to complete the Program will be divided by the number of years that the student remains in the Program and payment required in yearly installments. Applicants wishing to avail themselves of this system should consult in advance with a supervisor in their educational field and then expressly state their wishes in their application for admission. 14. About the Supplying of Personal Information Related to the Examination Following a request from the applicant, the Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science will supply the applicant with a breakdown of his/her results for a month period from the following week of the 8

announcement of the Examination results. It may not be requested by a proxy since this is personal information. The Admission Ticket for Examination must be shown when this information is requested. Without this ticket, the information will not be given to the applicant. 15. Procedure for Judging the Applicant s Qualification to take the Entrance Examination Applicants who would meet the Required Qualification (6), (7) or (8) need another procedure in advance as follows.
