We regularly consult with professional bodies such as Dapaanz and NZAC along with industry to ensure the learning you receive is current and relevant to today s world. Flexible study WelTec offers training programmes in Wellington, Petone, and Auckland. WelTec s programmes include full-time and part-time options along with short courses and online distance learning to help fit into your busy lifestyle. Blended learning Your programme of study will comprise of a mix of learning experiences and these will include: lectures, tutorials, online study, self-directed study, simulation, work placement, supervision, reflective practice, presentations, peer and self-assessment. There are courses that have high components of online learning. Online/Learning components By enrolling in courses with online learning you will be required to fully engage in the tutor supported learning activities. You should allow between 5 9 hours of online engagement per course each week. Computer skills You will need to have access to a personal computer with broadband internet along with basic computer skills. Marae experience Honouring Te Tiriti O Waitangi course includes a compulsory Marae experience. You will be expected to organise your own travel to and from the Marae. Detailed information will be provided at the beginning of this course. Work placement/practicum If your programme includes a work placement/practicum you will need to budget for these accordingly. You will be expected to pay for your travel expenses to and from your placement and any meals/ accommodation. Work placement coordinators and practicum staff will provide advice and guidance to assist you in securing a work placement. Please contact your workplace coordinator after your interview to discuss and plan for your needs. Professional supervision All students will be required to have professional supervision as part of their year two and three practicum courses. Professional supervision must be with a WelTec approved supervisor who is registered with an approved professional body. Students will require a total of 30 hours professional supervision within the degree programme. The cost of supervision is to be met by the student and is additional to course fees. (Estimated cost of $50-120 per hour). Our Connections with industry WelTec s Counselling and Addictions programmes are supported by the relevant industry associations and professional agencies throughout New Zealand, including Dapaanz, and NZAC. WelTec partners with key industry stakeholders, who participate in our advisory committees. We consult with professional bodies, managers, practitioners and advisors on the design and review of all Addictions, Counselling and Health qualifications. Our close connection with industry is also recognised by the many work experience opportunities the sector extends to WelTec s Addictions, Counselling and Health students, which includes practicum, clinical practice and the provision of supervision. 04
Registered and recognised Our qualifications are NZQA approved and accredited and are recognised by the Addictions Practitioners Association Aotearoa- New Zealand (Dapaanz) and the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC). For students studying towards a certificate, diploma or degree Full-time students should complete each stage in one year and parttime students are expected to complete each stage within two years. Please note that the certificate and diploma in Alcohol and Drug Studies are part time only. Recognition of prior learning If you have extensive knowledge and skills in this area, please enquire about our recognition of prior learning process. Note for new students If you have had experiences of trauma, addiction, mental illness, abuse or life events causing emotional harm, you may experience some emotional risk during the programme. WelTec has support and counselling services which you can access. Note for returning students Returning students are encouraged to re-enrol early for their next Trimester courses as spaces on some courses may be limited. This will ensure you will secure your first choice of course. Please note that elective courses will only be run if there is sufficient demand.(specialist electives are not offered every year). Entry requirements In addition to academic entry requirement (that can be found online), the following criteria apply to all students applying to study with the School of Health and Social Services. Selection criteria Applicants will also be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process which includes the following. Interview Applicants will be required to attend an interview as part of the selection criteria. The interview will provide the opportunity for you to demonstrate appropriate life experience and your likelihood of success on the programme. Personal counselling/personal growth (Counselling programmes only) Students are requires to complete 10 hours of personal counselling/ personal growth within the counselling programmes. Students will be required to meet the cost of counselling in addition to course fees. The cost of counselling is estimated between $80 - $120 per hour. 05

Graduate Diploma in Counselling Practice Level 7 Length: 1 year (Full-time) or 2 years (Part-time) Campus: Wellington and Auckland The Graduate Diploma of Counselling Practice is designed to meet the needs of other professionals, who require a qualification that enables them to continue working, or gain new employment in the counselling sector. In addition, it provides an opportunity for the many workers in human services, not designated as counsellors, but needing counselling skills to obtain them. Students will have the opportunity to develop counselling competencies under supervision in real workplace situations. Community Support Why study Community Support? WelTec provides a programme designed to prepare people to work in helping roles in the community and enhance the professional effectiveness of those who are already in such work. Our programme is taught by industry professionals, who have a wealth of knowledge in the areas they teach. WelTec s qualifications include practical application of knowledge in workplace settings and are ideal if you are either intending a future career in or are already employed within the care of the older person, disabilities, or other community support fields. National Certificate in Health, Disability, and Aged Support (Core Competencies) Level 3 Length: 17 weeks (Full-time) Campus: Petone, Auckland and Kapiti Whether you're already employed within the care of the older person, disabilities, or other community support fields, or simply considering the support worker field as a possible career path, the National Certificate in Community Support is a great opportunity to develop your skills and gain a recognised qualification. The National Certificate in Community Support (Core Competencies) is a foundational qualification designed for those working, or wishing to gain employment as a support worker in areas including care for the older person, intellectual disability or human Services. This programme will provide you with the knowledge, skills and best practises required within the industry. > Consumer Rights and Responsibilities - Gain knowledge in supporting a consumer's well-being and quality of life, engagement in the community, rights and responsibilities and self-advocacy, and culturally safe operating principles in a health or disability setting. > Risk Management - Learn to recognise and plan for risks within a health, disability and community setting. Programme Delivery Tailored to meet the needs of those working within the field of community support, the majority of your learning will take place in the workplace. You will be required to attend class one day per week and undertake selfdirected learning outside of class hours. Self-directed learning includes the observation and implementation of key learning outcomes within the workplace, on-site supervised assessments, and additional self-directed studies outside of work hours. Work Experience You will be required to arrange work experience either in your current place of work (if appropriate) or in a voluntary role at an appropriate agency. This will be discussed with your tutors during your interview.
