She started on her College course lastseptember and has exciting plans for the future. Holly s aim is to go to stage school and study dance on a scholarship like fellow Performing Arts student Paul Michael Jones who is now on a full scholarship at Laine Theatre Arts in London. I couldn t wait to start College, because of my GCSE profile Bury College made me a Mentoring for Excellence student and to challenge myself I took AS Drama and TheatreStudies as well as my BTEC National Diploma in Performance Arts Dance, so in the space of two years I will have achieved the equivalent of four A levels. I definitely made the right choice to come to Bury College First class marks at Cambridge Former student, Ardil Salem achieved three grade A passes in Law, Economics and History at Bury College. "Bury College is brilliant. One of the best decisions I ever made was to come here. I d advise anyone at any level to come to Bury College." 20 year-old Ardil, a former pupil of Coney Green School is now reading Law at Selwyn College, Cambridge. Ardil has made a great start to his University life, gaining a first in every module in his studies so far. His tutor has asked him to talk at an Academic conference between the University of Vienna and Cambridge, presenting a paper on his finding on Constitutional law.
College supports local businesses all the way Gary Newman s experience of Bury College dates back to 1978 when he studied for a City and Guilds qualification in catering. Gary now owns a successful bakery Newman s of Radcliffe. Gary is in no doubt that Bury College has played a vital role in its success. Over the past nine years we have received regular help from Bury College, via their Business Solutions team. Our staff have been on a variety of training courses and we have been made aware of grants and received invaluable help and advice. I would encourage anyone in Business, to take a look at Bury College and see what they can do for you. Medal for top marks PARENTS SAY "The College course is well structured, the College is well equipped and the enthusiasm of the tutors made the course sound so good I wished I was doing it!" Bury College student, Lyndsey Norrey, has been awarded a Gold Medallion for gaining the highest mark in the country in her Business course. Lyndsey, a former pupil of St Monica s High School, gained top marks in her level three course in Business Administration. Lyndsey is now studying a combined degree in Business and Maths at Manchester Metropolitan University. Therapy course promotes new venture Holistic Therapy at Bury College has proved to be a real winner for former student Emma Hodgson a former pupil at Woodhey High School. After successfully completing a Diploma in Holistic Therapy, 21-year-old Emma is now offering Holistic treatments at her new business venture in Ramsbottom. I have hired a room at the tanning centre in Ramsbottom and I am now concentrating upon getting my new business in holistic services afloat. Emma hopes to use her skills to promote and expand her business. From there she would like to progress and take her experience with her, travelling the world on a luxury cruise liner.
Geri is drawn by success A 16-year-old student was so impressed with the reputation and excellent facilities of Bury College that she travelled from Staithes on the East Coast to enrol. Geri Sharrock is now staying with her Aunt in Radcliffe after successfully passing her audition for the National Diploma in Performing Arts. Geri said, I was impressed with Bury College. After hearing about the reputation and seeing the facilities first hand I set my mind on moving to Bury and I didn t want to do anything else. Apprenticeships accelerate career prospects 17 year-old Faith Farnworth-Collinge, a former pupil of St Gabriel s High School, has worked at mini-me for just over a year and is currently studying for an Apprenticeship in Customer Service at level 2. Faith has just submitted her nomination for Apprentice of the Year. The Apprenticeship Scheme offered everything I was looking for, the chance to continue my education and gain valuable qualifications, and the opportunity to work and earn money. I heard that Bury College now provide a PGCE course. When I enquired, everyone was helpful and the quality of teaching has been amazing. They even helped find me some teaching practice. Now I am well on mywayto becoming a teacher. Thank you." I am absolutely thrilled to have put forward my nomination for Apprentice of the Year. I hope this will help me prove that the Apprenticeship programme is excellent and beneficial for those who want to pursue a more practical approach whilst gaining a recognised qualification. Faith hopes to progress onto a level 3 qualification in Customer Care and then onto a Business Management NVQ. From here Faith hopes to pursue her career to senior management level and eventually have her very own business. Performing arts on tour Middleton s Queen Elizabeth High School was so impressed by Bury College's latest Performing Arts show it has donated 200 to the College. Presenting the cheque was Sergeant Mike Stott from Bury Police Force. The College students put across the message of alcohol awareness in a very straightforward way. The performers are only 12 months older than the audience so it helps to carry more weight than an authoritative figure giving a lecture. Sergeant Stott recommended the play which raises the issues surrounding alcohol misuse after see the performance earlier this year.

A career in medicine Assad Khan, a former pupil of Prestwich High School - Arts College, is currently in his second year at Bury College. Assad is studying for 4 A levels in Biology, Chemistry, English Language and Psychology and is a Mentoring For Excellence student. Assad hopes to go to University to study medicine - his ambition is to become a doctor. In five years time I see myself as an overworked, underpaid and very disgruntled junior doctor, a prospect that really excites me, but which wouldn t have been possible without the support of my tutors and other members of staff at Bury College. The standard of teaching is excellent, the College has helped me enormously, it has taught me independence - the support I have received has been tremendous. Top job for aspiring chef Christopher Warwick, a former Bury College student has jetted off to California to take up his latest post as Chef de Partie at the popular French Laundry restaurant in San Francisco. PARENTS SAY "I was very impressed with how the College is run, and also with the facilities it has to offer." After studying his NVQ in catering at Bury College, Christopher became Commis Chef at the Princess Hotel in Manchester before taking up the post of Chef de Partie at Manchester s renowned Victoria and Albert Hotel. More recently Christopher has been working for celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay at his signature restaurant in Dubai. Success at Bury College Bury College for Achievement Bury College for Excellence Bury College for Success Bury College for Outstanding support for Students National Award for Excellence in AS Psychology The Psychology team has received a prestigious award from the Good Schools Guide following excellent examination results. The award celebrates the best results at AS level Psychology nationwide achieved by girls at a Non-selectiveState School. The results were based on the analysis of students individual performance in the 2005 examinations. These scores also contributed to the 2005 examination tables of which Bury College received an overall A-level pass rate of 98.6, well above the national average. Nicky Leeth, Programme Manager for Psychology and Sociology, is delighted, and notes We are extremely proud of our students results after all the hard work they put into the examinations. The Good Schools Guide is the independent critical parents' guide to top UK schools. Charity Fundraising Bury College students have successfully raised over 4500 for charitable causes this academic year. This includes money raised for the Pakistan earthquake appeal ( 1250), Children in Need ( 800), and a Heaton Park sponsored walk ( 1000) in aid of 18 year old Karl McDonald from Prestwich who is suffering from cancer. The money from the walk will be used to pay for a trip to Lourdes for Karl with the remainder being donated to Christie Hospital. Health and Social Care students raised over 600 in aid of a fellow student, Simon Ramsden, a second year student who died suddenly last year. In memory of Simon, students from the Health and Social Care Group and Simon s parents Rosalyn and Graham Ramsden completed a sponsored walk to Ramsbottom on Monday 8th May. In addition to the money raised, ICT students have also supported Farm Africa by supplying them with three goats, a much needed supply of water and school fees for a vet. A great learning environment, with helpful and friendly staff. Bury College is a brilliant place to study.
Catering students served champagne, strawberries and culinary delicacies at this year s Royal Ascot Racing Meet. 19 Catering students were selected to work for Sodexho Prestige, the UK s largest leisure caterer and corporate hospitality provider. This was an honour for Bury College students as only 100 students from colleges nationwide were selected to take part over this five day event. David Hodgeon, Programme Manager for Catering, was thrilled with the outcome; All the students really enjoyed working at the race meeting. The opportunity gave them hands-on experience of working in a large scale catering operation. Students Serve up Champagne at Ascot PARENTS SAY Bury College is without doubt our first choice for our children s education. Art-Show Stopper The Annual End of Year Show was held in the Beacon Theatre showcasing Art and Design students work. The exhibition featured a wide variety of creative work including paintings, photography, ceramics, prints, textiles, fashion, video and multi-media. In total over 80 students work featured in the show with guests visiting to see the outstanding pieces of work. Melanie Spooner, Programme Manager of Bury College s Visual Arts said: The annual event has become a focal point in the College calendar and a benchmark for the development of the Visual Arts in Bury. This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate new work by students who have completed their studies at Foundation Diploma, BTEC National Diploma and BTEC National Certificate Art and Design. Students visit Oxford University Three Bury College Mentoring for Excellence AS level students have been accepted onto this year s Sutton Trust Summer School at Oxford University. Laura Malhotra, Naira Khalid and Alex Gawthrope will stay at Oxford for one week in the summer and be given the opportunity to sample university life, to meet undergraduates and teachers and to gain a better understanding of the application process. Laura and Naira will study their chosen subject of English and Alex will study his chosen subject of Medicine. Students will study as an undergraduate would, learning with Oxford University tutors through lectures and tutorials. It s not all work though and students have plenty of opportunity to sample the extra-curricular programme. Over 100 students are participating in the Mentoring for Excellence programme at Bury College. This involves working closely with an experienced mentor who will provide on-going support and stretch students to achieve their own personal successes.
Supporting Local Businesses and Employees Bury College has succeeded in securing over 600,000 of European funding that is available for Employers and Employees to access to support business growth, productivity and improvement in staff skills. Eight projects are currently available thanks to European Social and Structural Funding. These include projects to upskill employees and support businesses through business advice and planning; a Forward Thinking project providing Management, Supervisory and Industry-specific qualifications for the Retail sector; and a Multimedia project providing technological support and access to conferencing facilities for local businesses. A further project, Follow-Through aimed at supporting women into higher work-based roles has just seen its first cohort succeed and graduate. Several students have already increased their confidence, progressed to higher education or received promotions as a result of the course and are delighted with their outcomes. Academic Success for Financial Studies 11 students have achieved outstanding success on an innovative Financial Studies Diploma at Bury College - with a 100% pass rate. The MP for Bury North, David Chaytor, visited the students at Bury College recently to consult and congratulate them on their achievements. David Chaytor commented I am delighted with what I have seen here today. It is great to see one of our own local colleges at the forefront in the move to teach financial education. This is a beacon of best practice that other schools, colleges and MPs in the country should sit up and take note of. Gavin Shreeve, Chief Executive of the Institute of Financial Services agrees: It is great to see colleges such as Bury support our initiative to teach personal finance education as a stand-alone subject. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people. It was a big step up from High School but I love studying at Bury College. I ve made many new friends and Bury College has a great study environment. Preparing Year 10s to Succeed For the third year running, Bury College has hosted a Careers Event for parents of pupils currently in Year 10 at school. The event had outstanding attendance and enabled parents and their children to see the career opportunities and potential that studying a course with Bury College can provide. Along with examples of the great successes of previous students, many employer representatives were on hand, discussing specific career paths such as Law, Medicine, Sciences, Child Care and Performing Arts.
Engaging Employees with a Bury College Apprenticeship Bury College Apprenticeships have been successfully placed at Bury Grammar School for the third year in a row. The school currently has four Apprentices working with the Grammar School on Information Technology Practitioners Apprenticeships. A Sporting Achievement The College second football team is currently riding high on success. The team won the Under 21s North West League, having completed the whole season unbeaten despite competing against 17 local colleges. Michael Wilkinson was one of the individual successes and awarded the Players Player of the Season and Top goal scorer for the second team. The first team also performed well and finished runners-up in the North West Colleges Under 21s A League, having also finished the season unbeaten. The sports students celebrated their championship year with an End of Season Presentation Ceremony. The evening also highlighted the individual successes and great performances by players from netball and football. Maths and Science Success 15 gifted and talented pupils from Woodhey High School visited Bury College recently to take part in an introduction to Forensic Science. The pupils were treated to a murder mystery play by Performing Arts students as an introduction to the crime scene. The pupils then assembled in the College Science laboratories to be given expert advice from College staff as to how to forensically investigate the murder through various techniques including hair analysis, blood typing and karyotyping. The Ultimate Maths Challenge continues to be a fun, number crunching event with teams from many different high schools taking part. Last year a team from Radcliffe Riverside won the event, with each member receiving 30 in gift vouchers. The challenge has proven popular once again this year and is already gearing up for a third successful year to start running from September. PARENTS SAY Having Visited Bury College and seen the facilities, enthusiasm of staff and achievements of students, my daughter will certainly be enrolling here. Richard Bowles is one of the current Apprentices with Bury Grammar School and is delighted with his training and opportunities so far; I maintain the IT network that supports staff and pupils at Bury Grammar School.
