Chapter 6- Did you know? Things about pandas Glossary 2

Chapter 1- Introduction A animal that is black and white soon might not live anymore. The chinese animal is called the panda. Some pandas live in zoos and some live in the wild. Now what some people are doing is trying to save the pandas. Do you know why pandas are endangered? Some people do and some don t. This book is here to tell why they are endangered and other facts about pandas that would be great to know. Photo by Kevin Dooley Flickr Creative Common 3

Chapter 2 - Why and How What is happening with the pandas and how are people trying to help them? Pandas are endangered and people are trying to help them so they wouldn t be endangered anymore. One reason why they are endangered is because people are cutting down the trees and bamboo were the pandas are living. They are doing that to make room for houses and roads for people to live there. So that means that they are cutting down the pandas food and habitat. Also that means that the pandas will not have that much room to grow. And if they don t have that much room then the pandas will not have that much room for the baby pandas to grow ether. When people are hunting other animals they are still killing the pandas but by accident. So that means that when hunters are hunting some other animal let's say a bear, pandas look similar to a bear, therefore the hunters accidentally shoots the panda. What zoologists are doing is going to be additional researching about pandas in order to save the species. Also what they are going to do is put more pandas in the zoo to protect them from being killed in the wild. 4

Chapter 3- What is life going to be like What is life going to be like when there is no more pandas living? When there is no more pandas in the world then life will not be the same as the old world. Because pandas are apart of our world. We need pandas. Think of this. Imagine if you went to the zoo with your 5 year old kid. You both go to where the pandas were. Your child will be like this Mommy where are all the padas? Then the mom will be like this Uhmm nervously There are no more pandas left. still nervous. Kid is staring at there mom. What do you mean there is no more pandas? Not they are screaming. Well There is no more pandas left. Because they are all extinct. The kid is so mad now that there face is like as red as a tomato. Well We came here to see padas and we are going to SEE PANDAS I WANT TO SEE PANDAS!!! PANDAS PANDAS!!! The kid is just so mad right now. They are on the ground now screaming so loud everyone can hear them. If you have a have a five year old girl or boy and you go to the zoo and there are no pandas and that animal is your kids favorite animal then good luck because some of that stuff might happen to you (not joking). Think about how pandas help us in many ways like they eat grasses and grass have bugs in them that we don t like, small rodents. Also weeds, herbs, vines, shrubs, trees. In zoos, the giant pandas eat bamboo, sugar cane, apples. Some of this foods like rodents and we as humans don t like rodents. As humans we don t like weeds at all. 5

Chapter 4- How many How many are left? Lets see there are about 100 pandas are left in the zoos. And about 1,600 pandas left in the wild. So that means that all together there are only 1,700 pandas left in the whole world. Ok lets get this straight, 1,700 pandas left, for any animal that is not a lot. So if there are only 1,700 left, then if all of those pandas die then you will not have any pandas left. So that means if all of the pandas are gone then think about this, what would life be like? What would we do with all of the open space from where the pandas were living. What would happen with all the bamboo trees? They would keep growing and growing. Imagine if they were gone 6

Chapter 5- Life of a panda Ever wonder what a panda eats, population, where they live, what they do all day, and etc First we will start with what they eat. Pandas eat lots of foods like grasses and occasional small rodents or musk deer fawns. In zoos, giant pandas eat bamboo, sugar cane, rice gruel, a special high-fiber biscuit, carrots, apples, and sweet potatoes. Also weeds, herbs, vines, shrubs, trees They really do eat a lot of food. Now for population there are only 1,700 like I said in Chapter 4. Where they live. Pandas main habitat is in Yangtze Basin in China. They also like to live in the bamboo forests. Also they live in zoos. What do pandas do all day, they eat most of the day, or they are looking for food and they also walk around too. If you think about it pandas have somewhat of have a normal easy life. Photo by Toshiyuki IMAI Flickr Creative Common 7

Chapter 6- Did you know? Did you know that? Did you that pandas can climb 13,000 feet. Pandas weight about 300 pounds. They eat 40 pounds of bamboo every day. They only eat one kind of bamboo. Pandas may live to be 25-30 years old. Pandas have 42 teeth. There are two main types of pandas the giant black-and-white panda and the Red Panda. Most newborn pandas die from diseases or because the mother panda accidentally crushes them. A normal adult giant panda can produce more than 60 pounds of droppings in a 24-hour period. Female pandas are not considered to be adults until they are at least five years old. For males, the age is seven years old. The skin of a panda matches their fur. That means that where their fur is black, the skin underneath is also black. The area where the fur is white, the skin underneath is also white. There is a legend about how pandas got their black and white fur. The legend states that pandas used to be all white. One day, however, a young girl tried to save a small panda from an attacking leopard, and the leopard ended up killing the girl. The story says that the all-white pandas came to her funeral wearing armbands made of black ashes. As the pandas hugged and comforted each other, the black ash smeared and created black-and-white pandas. 8
