Directions: Read the selection and answer the questions. The Story of Milton Hershey by Phil Shapiro Milton Hershey Almost every kid in this country has at one time or another eaten a Hershey chocolate bar. Hershey chocolate has become famous around the world. But did you know that the Hershey chocolate factory is only about one hundred years old? And did you know that the founder of Hershey Chocolate, Milton Hershey, had many failures in business before he started his famous company? Milton Hershey grew up in the rolling farm country of Pennsylvania. Before he became interested in making chocolate, Milton Hershey trained to become a printer. He worked for a small newspaper at first, and then decided that printing was not the right profession for him. Then he got a job at a candy factory in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a few miles from his home. After working a few years at the candy factory, he decided to open his own little candy business near Philadelphia. His first business had to close down because it was not making money. After closing down his first business, he traveled to Denver, Colorado, to learn how to make caramels. Copyright

He took his new skills back to New York and worked selling candies on the street. But this second business also failed. Finally, Milton Hershey moved back to the farm hills where he grew up. He then experimented with all sorts of different candies and chocolates. The area where he lived had lots and lots of dairy farms, so he had a large and easy supply of fresh milk. And he could get other supplies, such as sugar, from nearby Philadelphia. By 1893 he was selling a million dollars worth of caramel candy per year. Since his chocolate-dipped and his chocolate-flavored caramels were the best-selling, he decided to make chocolate himself. By experimenting, Milton Hershey learned how to make delicious chocolate by using fresh, sweet condensed milk. His milk chocolates were so popular that he sold his caramel factory and focused his business on making chocolate only. In 1903, the same year the Wright Brothers flew the first airplane at Kitty Hawk, Milton Hershey built a huge chocolate factory and an entire town to go with it. The town of Hershey, Pennsylvania, had a streetcar line, schools, library, sports arena, community center and a special school for needy children. Today, the town of Hershey is still the home of the factory that Milton Hershey built. And if you ever visit, you can smell the delicious chocolate smells just by driving through the town. The factory is not so hard to find. Just travel down to Cocoa Avenue until you get to East Chocolate Avenue. Turn right at the traffic light and just follow your nose. Hershey s Kisses were first introduced in Copyright

Directions: Read the selection and answer the questions. A Bear of a Job by Peter Winkler Introduction: In late 2010 the pair of giant pandas 10-year loan arrangement with the National Zoo expired. However, Chinese officials reached an agreement with the National Zoo to keep the pair of giant pandas in Washington, D.C. for five additional years, until December Can the National Zoo s new pandas help their endangered Chinese cousins to survive? Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are giant pandas that were born in China, the only country where wild pandas live. China has lent the pair to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., for Mei Xiang and Tian Tian eat together at the National Zoo. ten years. In exchange, the zoo will contribute a million dollars each year to help protect wild places, plants, and animals in China. Two million people have lined up to watch the furry celebrities since they went public last January. Zoogoers see incredibly cute animals who play and wrestle. But is that all? Scientists hope that panda fans will also see the face of an animal that needs our help. People Pandas What makes pandas so popular? For starters, they re rare. Only five other pandas live in the entire United States two in Atlanta and three in San Diego. Copyright

Some scientists see deeper reasons for pandas popularity. Strange as it sounds, the black-and-white critters may remind us a little of ourselves. Like humans, pandas can sit up straight. They have clear personalities, and they seem to share our boundless curiosity. Pandas also have round heads, fat cheeks, and big eyes as do human babies. And, like kids learning to walk, pandas have their awkward moments. Add lots of fur, and the animals seem cuddly. Two Thumbs Up! There s another reason why pandas fascinate us their thumbs. Each front paw has five fingers plus a lump of bone that sticks out like a thumb. Panda thumbs don t move, but they re very handy. The animals hold things by bending their fingers toward their thumbs. Scientists believe that panda thumbs are an adjustment to living in China s bamboo forests. Pandas use their paws to grasp, break, hold, and eat pieces of the wild grass. Bamboo Cage For Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, bamboo is just one tasty item on a menu that zookeepers provide. They also get special biscuits and treats. But for Panda Habitat in China pandas who live in the wild, bamboo is life. Each day, an average adult crunches 25 to 100 pounds of bamboo. Wild pandas eat almost nothing else. CHINA Areas where pandas live today Areas where pandas once lived Because of this limited diet, pandas must live where they are surrounded by bamboo. The animals cannot survive anywhere else. 10 Pandas once lived in much of eastern China. But the country s human population grew rapidly. People needed space for farms and towns, so they cut down huge portions of the bamboo forests. In the past 25 years, pandas have lost half their habitat Protecting Pandas As their world disappears, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian s wild relatives have become endangered. Only 1,000 or so of these beloved bears remain in the wild. Some scientists wonder how long the animal group can survive. Copyright

China knows that its pandas are a global treasure. Working with conservationists, Chinese officials have developed plans for protecting pandas. The heart of the plan is preserving panda habitat. To create larger reserves, or safe places, for pandas, the Chinese government sometimes pays farmers and loggers to move somewhere else. Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are part of the plan, too. These clowns have two big jobs while they re in Washington, D.C. First, wildlife experts hope the dynamic duo will promote interest in saving pandas. And then everyone hopes they ll start a family. Copyright

1 How are wild pandas and zoo pandas different? ` A. Wild pandas learn to walk; zoo pandas can sit up straight. ` B. Wild pandas grasp with thumbs ; zoo pandas grasp with paws. ` C. Wild pandas eat mostly bamboo; zoo pandas eat biscuits and treats. 2 Write a summary of the section titled Protecting Pandas. Include three main ideas from the section in your summary. Copyright
