The Matter Space Structure Studio is an experimental study environment for master students from a number of educational programs at the Department of Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. MATTER, SPACE, STRUCTURE We endorse interdisciplinary studies exploring the full advantage of the technical expertise at Chalmers within areas like material science from nanoscale to large span structures, life sciences in the search for new materials and urban sciences from citizen participation to spatial design. We encourage studies with close ties to the local community. We regard the city of Gothenburg as our partner along with the business community of the region. Worldwide, we seek alliances with universities and organisations with ambitions similar to ours. We expect our fully committed students to push the limits for how to build, to design and to think architecture. Our faculty is a strong mixture of young and estab l ished architects, of excellent practioners and of leading scholars. 2
CHALMERS - VIRSERUM In spring 2010 the Matter Space Structure Studio was asked to design and construct a bridge and a labyrinth out of wood for the exhibition WOOD 2010 at the Virserum Art Museum. The work was planned at Chalmers and carried out on site in Virserum during three days. 3
Labyrinth: A twisting and turning path, with a route from start to goal. Sometimes showing you the right way, and all you need to do is follow. Sometimes there are choices to make, and you risk to get lost in its complex branching passages. Reaching the goal requires both time and space. Bridge: Connecting, joining. Giving possibilities to travel across and above. Taking care of the natural load from gravity and wind, plus the load from those using it. Movement and rest. LABYRINTH AND BRIDGE 4 4
