FORCES FOR CHANGE The many forces for workspace change are closely inter-related: people s behaviour is influenced by the technologies they use, and the way the enterprise adopts and manages that technology is in turn affected by wider economic and business pressures. In discussions with our clients, Getronics consultants find a simple three-way split a useful starting point YOUR PEOPLE 2. YOUR TECHNOLOGIES 3. YOUR BUSINESS MODEL Start by taking a close look at how 123 people work and asking how habits are changing. Are working hours and locations, for example, fixed or flexible? You will also want to consider size and distribution. Are employee numbers reasonably constant, or do you need to scale up or down, perhaps with agency workers? Perhaps most importantly, you will want to explore your employees own attitudes and aspirations. This may take into account the balance between private and professional lives, for example; the potential for social networking as a part of your business; or the need for greater empowerment. There are huge differences in ICT maturity between organisations and indeed, often within the same enterprise. The CIO team quite rightly will always seek to protect investments, and to maximise the useful contribution of those investments to the business. At the same time, you need to manage expectations, influenced for instance, by the explosion in choice for personal devices. People are asking fundamental questions about both workspace technology and its supporting infrastructure. Where just a few years ago, for example, Data Centre ownership was a given, shared and outsourced models are now increasingly favoured. The decisions you make about workspace and ICT strategy will always be strongly influenced by your business model. MOBILITY In the latest Getronics ICT Barometer survey almost 40% of respondents stated that they now have the tools and connectivity needed to work as easily outside the office as they do on company premises.
