GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION Spanish 101 is the first part of the Elementary Spanish Online Course. Spanish 101 will cover all the following language skills: speaking, listening, reading writing and cultural awareness in an independent online learning experience. Students will be introduced to basic vocabulary and grammatical structures by developing elementary listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills through a variety of interactive, audio and video activities using the PORTALES e-textbook/learning PORTAL that students have purchased. The course relies on the use of authentic video and audio material in addition to online tutorials for grammar lessons explanations. These are an integral part of the e-textbook (PORTALES). Students will learn cultural elements of the Spanish-speaking world and will communicate with their professor and classmates using the communications tools of the e-textbook platform and blackboard. 2. COURSE GOALS/OUTCOMES: When students complete Span 101 (online) completion of this course, students should be able to speak and write simple sentences about topics covered during the semester session using newly introduced and acquired vocabulary and grammar structures. Students will have an elementary understanding of basic questions on subjects explored during the course and be able to respond accordingly. Students will be able to read and comprehend the basic gist of simple authentic material (captions, ads, message articles, ads, tel#s, signage etc) Students will learn to perform authentic tasks that can be used in everyday life, work and travel. To introduce students to some aspects of the Culture of the Spanish Speaking World so that they may examine and appreciate their own culture and this new culture that they are studying. In addition this course will aim to meet some basic goals of foreign language education as outlined by ACTFL: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons and Communities. 3

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Since this is an online class, you are responsible for studying and completing assignments on time according to your own schedule and respecting the due dates outlined in our syllabus. You must email the instructor with any question you might have. You are expected log in to PORTLAES EBOOK/LEARNING PORTAL AND BLACKBOARD frequently (5-6 times a week) throughout the semester. Students who do not purchase the e-book and login on to the course or who have not contacted the instructor by December 24, 2015 will be asked to drop the course. Students are responsible for dropping the course themselves by contacting the registrar s office and doing the needed paperwork to drop the course. Professor Navarro can t drop the course for you. If you have a medical/personal reason and have fallen behind schedule or need extra time to submit an assignment, you MUST contact the instructor immediately and show proof of such emergency in order to arrange new due dates or schedule. You will learn and study semi-independently and, at the same time, you will receive feedback, guidance, and support from me and you will work with classmates in an interactive context through discussion boards, e-chat etc. If you are a Rutgers New Brunswick and Camden student please be sure that you have access to Blackboard. You can use your RU username and password to log into Blackboard. The ebook/ textbook is called PORTALES please refer to section 2 of this syllabus and to the online access document on our blackboard site for purchasing and access information. 8. COURSE GRADING BREAKDOWN/EXPLANATION* (Please review your PORTALES dashboard) Credit: ONLINE CLASS This is the study, attend class, study, read, review, warm up aspect of the course. This track has a learning sequence. 40% Practice: HOMEWORK 40% These are the activities that are high stakes graded practicing what you have learned. There will be additional a Quizzes: 5% Mini section quizzes and Lesson Quiz/Test Exam: Final Exam 15% Quizzes/EXAMS: You will have 6 MAIN CHAPTER/LESSON QUIZ/TEST and several mini quizzes per CHAPTER/LESSON. and final exam. PARTICIPATION/ONLINE CLASS: Your participation for the class consists of: Reading/reviewing and completing the work that appears in your PORTALES dashboard in the ONLINE CLASS segment. You complete the work according to the schedule/assignments that appear in the calendar link in PORTALES. ACTIVITIES: Completing the exercises /assignments for each chapter on the due date clearly appears in the calendar link in PORTALES (it also appears in your syllabus) activities included additional activities that I have created they include: Mini-Culture project/oral Components and Writing Assignments:You will receive the instructions on these topics on a timely fashion later on in the semester. You will find the instructions on BLACKBOARD, Assignment section. You will upload your work there as well. QUIZZES: You will have mini quizzes that appear in specific sections of each lesson/chapter and a chapter quiz/test. EXAMS: You will have 1 FINAL exam. THE FINAL COVERS CHAPTERS 1-6 (CUMULATIVE) IMPORTANT: FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH DUE DATES WILL IMMEDIATELY RESULT IN A 0% (F) FOR THAT GIVEN ASSIGNMENT. IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS YOU MUST TO CONTACT THE INSTRUCTION PRIOR THE DUE DATE/TIME. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO TAKE QUIZZES AND EXAMS IN A PLACE WHERE YOU HAVE A RELIABLE INTERNET CONNECTION. RU Spanish 103-Elementary Spanish Winter 2015-2016 Syllabus 7 STUDENT COMMITMENT-WINTER SESSION Online courses are very challenging. They are ideally suited for students who can manage their time well and can organize their schedules. You should plan to spend time each week for reading the e-book materials/online CLASS and completing all HOMEWORK/ACTIVITIES assignments. You are responsible for keeping yourself updated with all of our assignments and notifying the instructor if you have a medical or personal emergency. Please remember that online courses take as much time (and usually more) to complete successfully as a traditional courses, so please do organize your time accordingly Please also remember that winter sessions are exceptionally demanding in terms of schedule Our traditional courses meet 3 hours per week with an additional 6 to 8 hours of outside work per week. Therefore for this Winter 2015-2016 session you need to be able to commit at least 15-18 hours per week to this course in order to be successful. INSTRUCTOR COMMITMENT As your instructor, I will follow the class as I have outlined in this syllabus. If any changes are needed in our syllabus to accommodate our class or the schedule of assignments, I will announce them well in advance to give you time to adjust. Please know that I am committed to your success and to your learning and to creating an atmosphere where you can all feel free to think, speak, read, write and imagine en español. Please be assured that you can count on the same attention, care and professionalism in this online course that you would find in my face-toface class. 11. COURSE CALENDAR: Please read carefully and follow the course schedule/track as you appears in PORTALES to see what you are expected to study each week. You must focus on the work for that week and for that week only. Allow enough time to read, study and understand the materials and practice. DO not move ahead of the syllabus work through each section carefully in the order you see in your PORTALES portal. Each chapter is divided into 7 sections that focus on a specific skill or sets of skills: Red = Contextos (Vocabulary in Context) Purple = Fotonovela (Structures and Vocabulary in Video in Context) Orange = Cultura (Culture point from the Spanish speaking world) Light Green = Pronunciación (Pronunciation in context) Blue = Estructura (Grammar in context and tasks) Dark olive green = Adelante (Reading/Writing strategies) Light Olive green = Vocabulary (additional review) LATEWORK POLICY: Anything that is submitted after this time/day will be late and thus not graded/ will get a 0 GRADE. If you requested a legitimate extension in advance you work will be 7

RU Spanish 103-Elementary Spanish Winter 2015-2016 Syllabus 8 graded but you your grade will be dropped by 20% unless you have a dean s office note explaining your need for additional time. Quizzes and Exams: Quizzes and exams MUST be taken on the due date that appears in the syllabus and that you can see in your student workstation calendar OR assignment view. Quizzes are timed and then they automatically close after the due date. If you miss your quiz or exam you will get a 0/zero for that quiz/exam. If you have requested a extension, you will take a different exam, you will have less time to do the exam and you will incur a 20% late penalty. NOTE: You will read, review listen to grammar tutorials, listen to audio lectures, view video, post discussion board posts, chat with a partner review power point presentations. 12. Understanding of the terms of the syllabus. Part of your work for our online course is to read and understand the syllabus, the requirements and to sign and submit an understanding the terms of the syllabus document and submit via blackboard. You will find this document in the documents section in blackboard on the first day of class.
