1 EME60: Current trends in IT (Fall 2014) 1 University of South Florida Department of Secondary Education EME60: Current Trends in Instructional Technology COURSE SYLLABUS Fall 2014 / Online Professor : Sang Park, Ph.D park2@usf.edu College of Education Conceptual Framework The College of Education is dedicated to the ideals of Collaboration, Academic Excellence, Research, and Ethics/Diversity (CARE). These are key tenets in the Conceptual Framework of the College of Education. Competence in these ideals will provide candidates in educator preparation programs with skills, knowledge, and dispositions to be successful in the schools of today and tomorrow. CATALOG DESCRIPTION Development of concepts, strategies, and materials for the use of computer technology in the enhancement of instruction. The course explores the impact that computer technology can have on the nature of the teaching/learning process. PR: Computer Literacy. COURSE OVERVIEW This course will provide an introduction to the field of instructional technology (IT) including: IT history, theories and models, and current trends of practice. Apart from readings and seminar participation, students will explore and present in small groups an emerging technology, its application in k-12, higher education or work place training, and lead a class discussion on how the applications relate to the IT theories and models as well as the historical trends. The topics will include but are not limited to the following based on participating students interests and increasing varieties of emerging technologies: Course overview and introduction to IT IT history and instructional design models Theories and models of learning and instruction Motivation, knowledge management and informal learning Web 2.0., apps and mobile learning Games and learning Augmented reality (AR) Geospatial technologies and their applications in education Other emerging technologies Ethical issues with technology integration Future trends in Instructional Technology

2 PREREQUISITES Graduate standing; substantial computer literacy in a web environment. EME60: Current trends in IT (Fall 2014) 2 COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Identify and discuss current trends in instructional technology (IT). 2. Compare and contrast learning theories and instructional design theories in IT. 3. Demonstrate design and development skills in the use of emerging technologies for teaching and/learning. 4. Evaluate current trends of IT based on theories and models of learning and instruction. COURSE MATERIALS Required Textbook Reiser, R. A., & Dempsey. J. V. (2012). Trends and issues in instructional design and technology (3rd ed.). Boston, MA: Pearson. - Additional readings will be provided in CANVAS during the semester. - Students are also encouraged to contribute to the class reading and resource list. Computer (important for online courses) A computer running a relatively new operating system (Mac OSX, Win Vista, Win7/8) with a reliable high-speed internet connection; the capability to download and install programs, headset w/ microphone, digital video camera and/or web cam (recommended), and local resources for debugging technical problems. Software and Additional Resources Resource lists and tips will be included within each module. In addition, the course discussion boards may be used by students to share additional resources, tips, etc. The instructor's goal is to utilize as many free or trial versions of software as possible within the context of the course content. COURSE DELIVERY, LOGISTICS, AND EXPECTATIONS This course is totally online via mostly asynchronous communication here on Canvas. Although we do not meet at a fixed time each week on campus, we ll follow a weekly schedule as if we are having our classes every week. It means that there are course activities that you need to complete on a weekly basis. You will find course modules already uploaded to Canvas for you. I will post new announcements whenever any changes are made. Make sure to check "New Announcements" every time when you login. s will be due mostly by midnight on Sundays unless otherwise specified. During the end of semester, we'll schedule 1-2 synchronous sessions for individual final paper presentations. Presentation schedule will be posted at least two weeks early so you can adjust your schedule accordingly. In case you have conflicts for the scheduled synchronous sessions, we will be able to adjust it. (please me and let me know) CLASS STRUCTURE Each module will consist of several of the following components:

3 EME60: Current trends in IT (Fall 2014) 3 Module overview: An introduction via text, video or audio demo or mini-lecture. An introduction on the topic will be provided in each module. These introductions may be delivered via mini-lecture by the instructors, audio or video demo or other available resources. Module content: - Readings: Prior to the start of each module, you are expected to complete the readings assigned for the module and be ready to share your thoughts and questions on the readings. - Online discussions and peer feedback: You ll participate in several online class or group discussion on issues related to course topics. You are also expected to provide feedback on your classmates work. For each discussion or peer feedback activities, you re required to follow the conversions and post more than once on different dates during each forum. Your postings should be thoughtful and constructive. - Reflection questionnaire: You will report your learning experience after completing each week s learning activities. s: - Design/develop/ Evaluate learning and instructional activities: In several modules, you will either design, develop, or evaluate a learning activity or an instructional activity supported by an emerging technology. - Quiz: You will take two quizzes. - Presentation: You will deliver one individual presentation either synchronously or asynchronously. ASSIGNMENTS Discussion participation on readings Individual and small group exploration and evaluation of emerging technologies and their applications in k-12, higher education or work place training Design/development projects Weekly reflection Quizzes Final paper Presentation Details and the evaluation criteria for each graded assignment will be provided in each module. COURSE CALENDAR See the last page of this syllabus for detailed course calendar. EVALUATION CRITERIA A. 90% or above (198pts 220pts): Outstanding performance in all areas of the course B. 80%-89% (176pts 197pts): Very good performance overall C. 70%-79%: (14 pts 17 pts) Good performance overall D. Below 69%: (132pts 13 pts) Fair but need improvement F. Below 60%: (lower than 132 pts) Unsatisfactory

4 EME60: Current trends in IT (Fall 2014) 4 GRADING POLICY "C" grades: No grade below "C" will be accepted toward a graduate degree. This includes C- grades. Please remember there is no grade forgiveness at the graduate level. Incomplete grades will not be given unless there is a serious interruption in a student's work not caused by their own negligence. As noted in the Graduate Student Catalog, an "I" grade is at the discretion of the instructor and can only be used "when a small portion of the student's work is incomplete and only when the student is otherwise earning a passing grade." Late s: All assignments have a due date, which means all assignments are expected to be posted on time. Any assignment posted after midnight of the due date is considered late. Points (10% per day, total of 70% for a week) will be deducted for late assignments. Excused late will be allowed only with proper documentation (doctor's note or any other proving documents). s not completed by the last day of week 1 will be given a zero. CANVAS LOGIN PROCEDURES (also see PDF file) You will access to the course via the MyUSF Portal. It is essential that you obtain access to your account, CANVAS (our learning management system), and other resources. The USFCard identifies you as a University of South Florida student. Distance learning students can use their USFCard to check out materials from the USF Library; to acquire a USF address; to gain entry to USF athletic events and campus recreation facilities; to gain student discounts to movie theaters and restaurants; and much more. To obtain a USF Card and a NetID, follow these steps immediately. (If you have your NetID and account already, please disregard this) 1. Obtain a USF Card: - USFcard online application Activate you NetID: - Go to the Information Technology Website: 3. Use your NetID to sign into MyUSF and CANVAS - MyUSF portal: Every newly enrolled USF student receives an official USF account that ends with "mail.usf.edu." You can access this account via MyUSF portal. Every official USF correspondence to students will be sent to that account. If you regularly use a different account, you can set up forwarding on your USF account. USF GRADUATE SCHOOL POLICIES Mandatory First Day Attendance: USF requires that all students attend the first day of class. Students who do not attend the first day may be dropped from the class. Their seats may be taken by other students, or they may need to reregister

5 EME60: Current trends in IT (Fall 2014) and pay the late fee. Distance-learning students must log into Blackboard and begin an activity to designate their intention to remain in the course. Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism is defined as "literary theft" and consists of the unattributed quotation of the exact words of a published text or the unattributed borrowing of original ideas by paraphrase from a published text. On written papers for which the student employs information gathered from books, articles, or oral sources, each direct quotation, as well as ideas and facts that are not generally known to the public-at-large, must be attributed to its author by means of the appropriate citation procedure. Citations may be made in footnotes or within the body of the text. Plagiarism also consists of passing off as one's own, segments or the total of another person's work. Consequences for academic dishonesty will depend on the seriousness of the offense and may include receipt of an "F" with a numerical value of zero on the item submitted, and the "F" shall be used to determine the final course grade. It is the option of the instructor to assign the student a grade of "F" of "FF" (the latter indicating dishonesty) in the course. Detection of Plagiarism: The University of South Florida has an account with an automated plagiarism detection service which allows instructors to submit student assignments to be checked for plagiarism. I reserve the right to 1) request that assignments be submitted to me as electronic files and 2) electronically submit to Safe.com OR turnitin.com, or 3) ask students to submit their assignments to Safe.com or turnitin.com through myusf. s are compared automatically with a database of journal articles, web articles, and previously submitted papers. The instructor receives a report showing exactly how a student's paper was plagiarized. In order to comply with federal (FERPA) and state privacy laws, you (students) are not required to include personal identifying information such as your name, SSN, and/or U# in the body of the work (text) or use such information in the file naming convention prior to submitting. Please follow carefully your instructor s instructions regarding what identifying information to include. Your will be placed in the course grade center in your account that can be accessed by the instructor. ADA Statement: Students in need of academic accommodations for a disability may consult with the office of Services for Students with Disabilities to arrange appropriate accommodations. Students are required to give reasonable notice (typically working days) prior to requesting an accommodation. USF Policy on Religious Observances: Students who anticipate the necessity of being absent from class due to the observation of a major religious observance must provide notice of the date(s) to the instructor, in writing, by the second class meeting.

6 EME60: Current trends in IT (Fall 2014) 6 Withdrawal from Course: If you decide to drop this course, please be sure to officially withdraw -- otherwise you will receive a grade (probably an F) for the course. Remember, there is no grade forgiveness at the graduate level. Please see the USF Graduate School's policy for Dropping Courses and use their form. Incomplete Grade: No incomplete grades will be awarded without extenuating, documented circumstances, such as death in the family or extended illness. If you request an Incomplete you will be assigned the grade that you have currently earned, which will be updated when you complete the requirements of the course. If you do not update this grade within the specified time period, you will automatically be assigned this grade. If you believe that there is a possibility that you may not be able to complete the requirements and your current grade is not acceptable, then you should officially withdraw from the course. Please see the USF Graduate School's policy for Incomplete Grades and use their form. Emergency Procedures: In the event of an emergency, it may be necessary for USF to suspend normal operations. During this time, USF may opt to continue delivery of instruction through methods that include but are not limited to: CANVAS, Elluminate, Skype, and messaging and/or an alternate schedule. It's the responsibility of the student to monitor CANVAS announcement for each class for course specific communication, and the main USF, College, and department websites, s, and MoBull messages for important general information.
