Gift from Cornell Capa, through the Herald agency. Martin Munkácsi: Rain in Sicily, Palermo, Italy, 1929/1994 Martin Munkácsi: Three black children running in to the sea, Liberia, 1930/1994 Munkácsi visited Liberia in 1930. This year he took his emblematic photo of the three boys, contrary to popular belief, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Henri Cartier-Bresson wrote the following to Munkácsi s daughter, Joan: Probably in 1931 or 1932 I saw a photograph by your father of three black children running into the sea, and I must say that it is that very photograph which was for me the spark that set fire to the fireworks.and made me suddenly realize that photography could reach eternity through the moment. It is only that one photograph which influenced me. There is in that image such intensity, spontaneity, such a joy of life, such a prodigy, that I am still dazzled by it even today. This quote is completely apt. However, there are thousands of kilometers between Liberia and Tanzania where above mentioned lake can be found. And, at that time, there were no charter flights to cover the distance back and forth. However, if this is so, the location named in the photo insert of Pesti Napló (Képes Melléklet), where the photo was first published, becomes fairly questionable. One more thing: the boys are not running in a lake but in the foamy waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Not in Tanzania but in Liberia. It does make a difference. And also, can t tell how Lake Tanganyika got involved in this and why professional literature keeps quoting and using the title as such for 80 years now: take out the atlases and look at the enormous distance between these two locations. Furthermore, we know that Munkácsi left Libera for Berlin via Sevilla and Madrid and these cities are in the exact opposite directions. Not to mention that should he have flown across half of Africa, he wouldn t just have one photo from this area. So, we have one less legend. Captain Johann Eilingsfeld s (of Dunaszekcső) heritage enriched Janus Pannonius Museum with a peculiar and significant photography collection. In the 1910 s and 1920 s, he served at the Danube Steamboat Shipping Company and took a lot of pictures. These shot reveal landscapes, settlements, and buildings along the Danube. He also photographed events related to military operations of WWI along the river, as well as stills recording nautical life. His portraits and group photos taken of people traveling on the boats are especially interesting. The collection contains glass negatives, as well as the enlargements of the original and signed paper photos that include the circumstances of picture-taking. The collection supplements Captain Eilingsfeld s other nautical documents. Yet another addition of interest is the Captain s memoirs that shed light on his personality.
