Getting Set Up in Business The IRS requirements for being a business are that you must be able to show you had intention to make a profit and you must be able to show that you are operating like a business. There are a number of ways to be seen as a business including: Choose a business entity (sole proprietorship, limited liability corporation, partnership, s-corp, corporation). Jane Shauck 2011 Register your business with the local, state and federal government. Get a separate bank account for your business. Your current bank can educate you about this. To avoid tax trouble, you need to keep your finances from your business in a separate account from your personal. Create a business plan.
