WARDEN 4 ELECTRONIC WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FEATURING: New Zealand made multi purpose plumbing control for Prison cells Vandal resistant controls Water saving fittings
DESCRIPTION Warden 4 is a multi purpose electronic control system for ensuring ultimate security and economy of plumbing fixtures. This document gives information on the electronic control system, not the plumbing fixture or plumbing design itself - refer seperate literature. Warden 4 uses piezo electric switches to activate low voltage industry standard solenoid valves on plumbing fixtures. Warden 4 can be used for high security applications such as; - Prison Cells - Police Stations - Courthouses allowing control over plumbing fixtures where vandalism, self injury, excessive water use and drug concealment can be major problems. OPERATION Pressing a piezo switch initiates a solenoid to open for a specific time. At the end of the run time Warden 4 will lock out that fixture for a dead time. The run and dead times are programmed into Warden 4 to suit the model specified. Where Warden 4 is to be installed in high security applications, often clients have special requirements and the Warden 4 will be specifically programmed to suit. Features of Warden 4 tailor the program to suit the application. For example, shower run times can include one second blips of the solenoid to warn the user that their run time is thirty and fifteen seconds from the end. Linked inputs can also prevent hot and cold taps being switched on simultaneously or for a toilet to be flushed when a shower is in use. The many programming options available with Warden 4 are best explained by one of our staff. Warden 4 is capable of controlling; - showers - WC and urinal flushing - hot and cold basin taps - auxillary extract fans - floor gulley trap primers - thermal scalding of circulating loop systems Although Warden 4 can be installed as a standard product shown on the enclosed specification sheets, the real advantage of Warden 4 is its versatility and many programming options, too numerous to fully explain in this document. Talk to one of our staff for recommendations and project planning. SECURITY MANAGEMENT Warden 4 is capable of linking into a Modbus capable security management system or can be installed with Warden 4 low level interface to enable remote control of plumbing fixtures. 1
WARDEN 4 COMPONENTS WARDEN CONTROLLER Warden 4 is a 24V AC 4I/O electronic control system allowing connection of up to four piezo electric switches (inputs) and four 24V AC solenoid valves (outputs) Depending on the settings programmed into Warden 4 the solenoids will open for a specific run time once the appropriate piezo switch is pressed. Functionality of each I/O is dependant on the program set into Warden 4 at time of commissioning. Where multi use applications apply (eg multi showers) all four I/Os will operate in an identical manner. Where Warden 4 is to be used for a prison cell or similar each I/O is programmed to suit the customers requirements. Each Warden 4 has 1 additional I/O which allows for tailored applications, refer to Page 10 for further information Power to Warden 4 is provided by a dedicated 230V/24V AC 40VA transformer which mounts next to the Warden 4 control module and plugs directly to a 230V AC 10A supply socket (by others). Warden 4 has two comms ports allowing integration into a Modbus capable security management system or to Warden 4 dedicated low level water management system - refer Page 9 1 /2 x 1 /2 24V AC solenoid valve W-PC-HCWS (dual flush) Piezo switch plate SOLENOID VALVES Industry standard fibreglass polymide 1 /2 BSP (15mm) 24V AC N.C. solenoids are used. Each solenoid is plugged directly into the Warden controller using the supplied connector leads. Each solenoid valve connection corresponds to the appropriate input switch connected. e.g. Input 1 activates solenoid valve 1 Options: 1. Brass solenoid valves using DIN connectors available on special request 2. 2 way brass block solenoid with 1x 1 /2 inlet and 2 x 1 /2 outlets allow more economy in pipe up in certain applications 3. Pre-plumbed manifolds allowing quick connection and lower installation costs - refer Page 11 CABLING Each Warden 4 is purpose designed to suit the application into which it is to be installed. Warden 4 controllers, piezo switch plates and solenoid valves are often required to be installed in remote locations from each other. Input cables from piezo switch plates are available in 1.0m, 2m and 4m lengths. Solenoid cables are available in 0.7m, 2m and 4m lengths. Cables should be specified and ordered to suit the project layout. Warden 4 controllers are usually mounted in a duct or in the ceiling close to the fixture which they are serving. Piezo plates and solenoid valves are sometimes remotely mounted. It is VITAL that complete access to piezo switches and solenoids are given, not only for installation purposes but also for future servicing. A minimum 25mm conduit must be laid between all fittings to allow ease of installation. Any conduit must be installed using radiused bends NOT elbows. PIEZO SWITCH PLATES Warden 4 can control up to four piezo switches and these switches can be mounted on individual plates or all on the same plate depending on the product required. Plates are made to either security screw or pop rivet to metal electrical flush boxes (by others) that should be fitted into the wall framing prior to wall lining or cast into pre-cast walls. All plates are 1.6mm brush finish stainless steel and are etched to suit the product specification. Piezo switch buttons are 18mm anodised aluminium and are coloured to suit the application. A fifth I/O allows for an additional piezo switch for features such as half flushing WC s refer Page 10 2
WARDEN 4 - PRISON CELL PLUMBING CONTROL 30 100 280 Warden 4 Control Module Allow 100mm clearance for cables DESCRIPTION Warden 4 prison cell plumbing control is a duct mounted electronic plumbing control providing a vandal resistant means of operating plumbing fixtures in high security applications such as prisons where inmates are longer term and cells usually include showers. Warden 4 Model WA-PC-HCWS allows complete control over a typical cell that requires - WC flushing - Basin faucet (tempered and cold water) - Shower Where a shower is not required specify Model WA-PC-HCW. Warden 4 prison cell plumbing control is a fully programmable, standalone microprocessor based controller that acts independantly of any other security or plumbing system. It is low voltage, thus the installation and maintenance of Warden 4 security plumbing control can be substantially be completed by a plumber without the need for any highly technical personnel. Warden 4 can be integrated into the security management system allowing cell water isolation, configuration changes, and power resets (refer Page 9) comms Showerhead Piezo plate Bubbler Combi 3 WC COLD BASIN Zurn flush valve S S 2 way block solenoid valve 80 HOT SHOWER Piezo switch plate to suit WA-PC-HCWS Cold Supply Hot Supply 93 Transformer Piezo Switch Cable 1m - 4m Solenoid Valve Cable 0.75m - 4m FP Filterball valve DO-ES8022 thermostatic mixer Plumbing Schematic Model WA-PC-HCWS S S 154 COLD WC BASIN HOT Piezo switch plate to suit WA-PC-HCW Delabie 200000 Premix comms Warden 4 Control Module Showerhead Piezo plate Bubbler Combi OPERATION Basin: Pressing the appropriate piezo switch will allow water to flow for approx 15-20 seconds (pre-set) Available for immediate re-use Tempered and cold water piezo switches cannot be used simultaneously. WCs: Pressing the appropriate piezo switch will initiate a complete flush of the WC. Flush will then lock out for a short time (usually 30 seconds) Programming with Warden 4 can enable limits on how many flushes are available each day. Shower:Pressing the appropriate piezo switch will initiate 4-7 minute shower (pre-set) Once the solenoid closes, Warden shower control will lock out for a short time (usually 2 minutes) Programming with Warden 4 can enable limits on how many showers are available each day. Warden 4 shower control gives the user warnings when the shower is nearing completion. REMOTE CONTROL The Warden 4 is an independant system which does not require any other device to service the solenoids or switches it controls. As such it cannot be influenced by outside control systems without specific connections. Some prison projects may require a level of remote control over the Warden 4 to enable; 1. Cell water isolation in case of riots or drug searching 2. Cell use changes e.g. 1 man to 2 man occupancy 3. Extra showers after work or sport 4. Cell monitoring to check status of cell water use 5. Diagnostic checks on Warden 4 controllers This can be achieved in two ways 1. Low level control Each Warden 4 controller is linked using standard Cat5 Ethernet cabling to a remote touch screen PC which would be specifically designed and installed by MacDonald Industries staff to suit the application. Standard 10/100Base-T Ethernet cabling practices and equipment are used to connect to the PC via MODBUS gateways. Each monitor would have a graphical touch screen (example below) allowing the user easy recognition of the cell water options. Typically this screen would be located in either a low level administration area such as a guard house serving the particular cells under their control, or in an administrators office if that is preferred. A combination is possible giving progressive accessability to the user depending on the clients specification. As an example, a guard house might only offer cell water isolation for the block it serves. A higher level may have all the features available with Warden 4 beginning with a complete site plan of the prison. The user can look in detail at each cell or cell block as required. Typical Cell Block View Select Nominated Cell to move to individual cell details below Cell water isolation - Provides cell water shut down for entire cell block Typical Cell View Cell Type Change - allows configuration changes where cell use may periodically change e.g. 1 man / 2 man / disabled Status - allows guard to check whether cell use count has been reached. Graphical display indicating maximum use reached Extra Shower - gives the option of an additional shower over the allocated number. Cell water isolation - Provides cell water shut down for this cell only Use Count Reset - resets the count on the number of uses available per day Note: May be password accessable 4
2. High Level Control Warden high level interface allows the functionality of the low level control shown on Page 9 to be dealt with at security management level only. This would be suitable if it was not considered prudent to allow staff at guard level to modify cell water use. Because of the need to provide an interface with a secure software system it is important for the Warden control and its software to be at arms length from the security system. Warden 4 uses a multi drop Serial Network to connect all its controllers to a MODBUS/TCP system using an industry standard MODBUS gateway. Up to 35 x Warden 4 controllers are installed per gateway. The number of Warden 4 controllers capable of connection to the SMS is therefore limited only by the number of gateways installed. Each Warden 4 controller is addressable within the system to allow individual and precise control of each cell. Standard Cat5 Ethernet cabling can be used for an economical wiring layout. The daisy-chain connection of the Warden 4 units simplifies cabling layout, providing a single connection point to a MODBUS gateway port. Standard 10/100Base-T Ethernet cabling practices and equipment can be used to connect the MODBUS gateways to the Security Management System. System design should be done in consultation with MacDonald Industries Ltd and your Security Management installer to ensure the most economical use of equipment and correct placement of interface gateways. Protocols and cell water function options as shown in the low level control, would be available to the security management system through a series of MODBUS addressable parameters. A set of tables provided by MacDonald Industries will document the available function options that can be selected by the security contractor at the time of commissioning the building. MacDonald Industries Ltd responsibilty would end with the installation of the MODBUS gateway and supply of the address lists. A full specification of the high level interface requirements is available on request PROGRAMMING WARDEN 4 Warden 4 has the capability of storing up to 50 pre-set programs. Most of these are hard programmed into the module to suit a range of applications such as prisons, Police stations, multi showers, multi WC s etc. Refer to separate literature.these programs are not able to be changed without a complete software dump. There are however 10 program options which are reprogrammable and this can be completed on-site by one of our staff to suit the application if special conditions exist. These would be unique and contract specific so careful thought needs to be given before deciding on your requirements. Choosing one of the pre-set programs is a simple matter of scrolling through a list using the PC board Parameter Adjustment buttons. This can be done on site to suit. Consult your MacDonald Industries representative for the best advice. 5TH I/O Warden 4 has an optional 5th I/O which is used for special purposes. It is not used as a means of extending Warden 4 s solenoid capability as such. For instance it is not designed to make it capable of operating a 5th shower. It can however become a useful tool in offering features to enhance Warden 4 options. The input connection could be used for features such as, introducing a half flush to a prison cell toilet. The output connection can be used to allow switching of an extract fan for showers If you have a special requirement that you think the 5th I/O can solve, talk to one of MacDonald Industries staff to discuss the potential. BUZZER Warden 4 also has an optional piezo buzzer connection. This allows the user to receive an audible feedback on use of Warden. If, in a prison cell, the maximum use count has been reached or the relevant switch is in lock-out phase, the buzzer will sound off with a short pulse when the button is pressed, thus giving the user the necessary response, reducing potential failure call outs. 5
