WILLINGTON PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING EVENT People living in Willington have had their say on how money is spent in their local area. Three Towns Area Action Partnership (AAP) held a public vote event on May 28 and invited local residents along to choose from their seven favourite projects hoping to secure a share of the 8,000 available. It s Up 2 U 2012 gave local organisations, schools and voluntary and community groups in Willington the opportunity to receive funding up to 2,000 to deliver a local project. The groups behind the initiatives presented their ideas and the public were then given the chance to vote for their projects with Hunwick Cricket Club coming out tops to secure 1200 to transform a meeting room in the pavilion and improve toilet facilities. Sandy Denney, AAP Co-ordinator said It was fantastic to see so many people turn out to have their say on what and where funding should be allocated in their community. Feedback was excellent and 96% of all the people who attended said they had learnt about other organisations that are in their area. I would just like to say a big thank you to all those involved The Phoenix Centre also secured 2000 to expand the existing car park at the rear of the centre and Parkside Community Association Football Club is being given 1700 to provide 17 days of football activities during the school holidays. Other successful projects included Willington Community Action Environmental Group who are hoping to use the 1600 to improve the appearance of Greater Willington and Willington Football Club who will use 1500 for a ground maintenance project to purchase, amongst other things, a ride on mower. This presentation/workshop delivered by Steve Thompson of Digital City Innovation (Teesside University) is intended to give a broad overview of the wealth of digital tools and practices that are available to assist small organisations and businesses. We will take a look at Social media marketing as well as other practical digital tools all with an emphasis on free. The workshop will take place between 10.30am-12.30pm on Wednesday, 13th June at Eastgate Village Hall. Get Mentoring - The Weardale AAP in partnership with CDC Development Agency are offering a FREE 'Gent Mentoring' workshop on Monday, 2nd July between 1.30pm and 4.30pm at the Frosterley Village Hall. The outline to the workshop will be to explore the background to mentoring, the tools and skills required to be a mentor and understanding the legal and ethical requirements. The workshops will explore: Introduction to Enterprise Mentoring A course designed to highlight the skills, tools and knowledge needed to become a successful mentor Interactive workshop delivered by CDC Enterprise Agency, which includes refreshments! DOG FOULING AND LITTER FOCUS GROUPS Durham County Council and Durham Constabulary are organising a series of focus groups aimed at helping to improve the services we deliver to deal with dog fouling and litter in our communities. Initially the focus groups were intended for residents who had previously identified those issues as a problem in a Durham Constabulary Community Survey; however, due to a low response rate from that group of individuals, we are happy to open them up to AAP forum members who would like to help. The aim of the focus groups is to clarify what aspects of the issues are of most concern and to identify changes that could be made to improve the services we provide. Details of the four sessions we have planned are set out below and those interested in helping can apply to attend any one of them (i.e. individuals don't have to go to the one nearest their home if it isn't convenient for them). ONE POINT SERVICE Working together, staff from the NHS and Durham County Council created a unique service to provide a one stop shop for support, advice and a range of activities for children, young people and their families. This includes support from early pregnancy to the age of 19 years and for some children and young people who have a disability, up to the age of 25 years. This service is called One Point and makes it easier for you and your family to access: Health Visiting School Nursing Educational Welfare Behaviour Support Educational Psychology Personal Advice (formerly Connexions) Youth Work Family Support Anti-bullying Personal Support Services are offered through 10 new One Point Service offices located throughout the County as well as our existing Sure Start Children s Centres, Youth Centres and a number of Health Centres to extend the reach of the Service into the heart of our communities. COMMUNITIES OF INTEREST NEWS Inclusive Sport The Inclusive Sport Fund has been set up by Sport England with 8 million of National Lottery Funding. It will invest in programmes designed to grow the number of disabled young people (age 14+) and adults regularly playing sport. Butler Trust The Butler Trust, a charity which rewards and promotes excellence in prisons, probation and youth justice, has launched its 2012-13 Award Scheme. Butler Trust Awards are given to staff and volunteers in correctional settings who deserve recognition for their work - whether that's for an outstanding piece of creativity or innovation or 'just' someone doing their job extraordinarily well. The nomination cycle closes on 31 May. The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Award The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Award is open for nominations. This is a new award for national organisations involved in volunteering activities. Investment and Contract Readiness Fund The 10 million Investment and Contract Readiness Fund is now accepting applications from social ventures to enable them to access new forms of investment and compete for public service contracts. Grants between 50,000 and 150,000 will be available on a rolling basis to ambitious social ventures who will go on to raise at least 500,000 investment, or who want to bid for contracts over 1 Calling all young filmmakers from the UK aged 6-19 years
Kids for Kids UK is pleased to announce that it will be hosting it's 4th Film Festival for children and young people with support from the BFI Education, London and the Gala Theatre and Cinema, Durham. We are now seeking submissions of short films made by children (6-12 years) and young people (13-19 years) of up to 10 minutes in any of the following 3 categories: * Live Action * Animation * One Minute Films Selected films for the competition section will be screened at our festival events either at the BFI Southbank, London (6-12 years) on 27th October 2012 or the Gala Theatre and Cinema, Durham (13-19 years) date tbc. Full details of the festival programme will be announced in September 2012. The festival team will appoint a professional jury and a young people's jury who will award the following: Best Film in each age group and in each category, and one Grand Prize for Outstanding Achievement for a film made by children and young people from each age group. Awards will be announced at the conclusion of the festival in either London on the 29th October 2012 for the 6-12 years or Durham for the 13-19 years. Community Capital Development Workshop Re-running in June A project that has helped North East groups and organisations raise 7.8million to buy, build and develop buildings, is offering another chance to attend one of its workshops. The Places for Everyone scheme is holding An Introduction to Capital Development workshop on Tuesday 19 June, 10am to 4.30pm at Design Works in Felling, Gateshead. The workshop is aimed at voluntary sector organisations that are considering, or in the process of, refurbishing or redeveloping a building, taking control of one from a local authority, or starting a complete new build. This is a special chance to take part in the project, which officially came to an end in March, but whose partners are keen to keep the momentum going due to the high number of success stories More details BREEZE CYCLING The Breeze network is British Cycling s exciting recreation programme to get more women riding a bike. It is about fun, friendly and social bike rides in a local area led by women for women. Funded by Sport England, Breeze relies on a hugely important group of volunteer champions to make the programme happen. Without their amazing energy, enthusiasm and commitment to get women bike riding, we simply wouldn't be able to offer these exciting experiences. We are looking for a number of Breeze champions across England. There is no need to be a cycling expert - just be confident on a bike and keen to help others. We're looking for enthusiastic people to get involved in the Breeze network and inspire women to get more out of their bike, have fun with friends and get a recognised qualification at the same time. To become a Breeze champion: You'll take part in a fun one day ride leadership course where you'll have a chance to meet other Breeze champions. The certificate qualifies you to independently plan, deliver and promote rides to groups of women. In addition to free training, we will provide you with a Breeze kit, British Cycling Ride membership and plenty of support along the way. Furthermore, to ensure you're able to deliver safe bike rides, British Cycling will support you to gain a first aid qualification. In return we ask champions to deliver on average 12 rides over the year to local women in their area.

GOVERNMENT ALCOHOL STRATEGY In the government's alcohol strategy published at the end of March this year there was the introduction of a minimum unit price for alcohol. You may have already seen in the press significant media attention in Scotland and that is likely to be replicated in England in the foreseeable future. Press attention has been given to the warnings from the alcohol industry creating public concern about the cost of alcohol and how that will impact on lifestyles as well as the legal aspects. Little attention has been given to the actual facts, research and the evidence base for a minimum unit price. At this point we are expecting a consultation on the pricing level in the autumn and would hope that partnerships, teams and individuals will respond to the consultation. MEET THE FUNDER Durham Rural Community Council has organised a free Meet the Funders event which is taking place on Friday 15 June at Eastgate Village Hall in Weardale please find details attached. DURHAM DALES EASINGTON AND SEDGEFIELD CCG: IMPROVING QUALITY AND DESIGNING STROKE PREVENTION SERVICES EVENT Durham Dales, Easington and Sedgefield (DDES) is a shadow Clinical Commissioning Group and will be responsible for providing health care in the future. Durham Dales Commissioning Locality are currently co designing the experience of stroke prevention services which will be provided in DDES and they would like to meet with you to help improve he stroke service. They want anyone interested in improving stroke prevention (people who use services, carers, front line staff, GPs and providers) to tell them what the current service feel like, and to help improve the stroke service. Please come along and help make this happen.
