what it s really like WORKLOAD Depending on which course you choose, you may be able to squeeze all of your contact hours in to three days of the week but you ll still be busy. You will need to read, research, review and ensure your assignments are completed on time at university, that s your responsibility. COURSE STRUCTURE University structure is different to high school. You will attend lectures and tutorials for each unit (subject) of your course. A unit will run for one semester (6 months) and usually has an exam at the end of the unit. Lectures are in big rooms with 100 500 students and tutorials are in smaller classrooms with 5-30 students. Depending on your chosen course you may also be required to go on practical placement eg. nursing, teaching, law and paramedicine. These placements are undertaken in industry, at hospitals, pro bono law firms, schools etc, giving you a real-life experience. MORE RESPONSIBILTY At university, it is up to you to ensure you attend classes and get the required work completed. You won t have teachers hounding you for assignments or homework, but you will be responsible for your own learning. Study where you want ACU is a national university and has 6 campuses up the east coast of Australia: Brisbane,, Strathfield, Canberra, Melbourne and Ballarat. LOTS OF CHOICE ACU has 6 Faculties and over 60 courses on offer to you nationally. Faculties are: Health Sciences, Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Law, Theology & Philosophy. You also have the opportunity to undertake your core units in Florence, Italy. Opportunities University life is what you make it. You will meet lots of new friends from different walks of life that you will hold on to for a lifetime. You will join clubs and societies, and be a part of lots of fun social events. 6

Why study at acu? UNIQUE Australian Catholic University (ACU) has six campuses around Australia (Ballarat, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, North Sydney and Strathfield). We aim to empower our students to think critically and ethically, and gain the skills to bring about change in their communities, professions and industries. WE VALUE YOU As a publicly funded university, we welcome staff and students of all beliefs and backgrounds, and uphold a respectful, open-minded and culturally diverse learning environment. We support our students in attaining the highest level of academic achievement through the provision of quality teaching and resources. We are committed to providing equal access to education for all people. We provide flexible learning options such as part-time study and pathway courses to meet the ever-changing needs of our students. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE We build and maintain strong links with our communities and industries to produce highly skilled professionals who are leaders in their field. Throughout the course of their studies, students undertake professional placements, volunteer work and community service, with many securing excellent jobs before they graduate. MORE THAN STUDY University is a great place to meet new people and have new experiences. Each campus student association regularly hosts events such as barbecues, balls and concerts. There are also clubs, societies and initiatives, and sporting events such as ACU Games and University Games. We are committed to the development of social and community engagement by providing opportunities such as volunteer experience programs which allow students to give back to their communities and make a difference. TRAVEL THE WORLD Students don t have to wait until they graduate to see more of Australia and the world. ACU students can attend an overseas university in more than 16 countries, complete an internship with Disney, and work in community programs around the world all while receiving credit towards their degree. YOUR SUCCESS We understand that success means different things to different students. The Office of Student Success (OSS) works closely with students to meet their unique personal and academic needs. The OSS provides academic skills, career development and counselling services, and support for people with special needs or disabilities on each campus. Campus Life Coordinators and the ACU National Student Association (ACUNSA) ensure students have the resources they need to achieve a healthy study/life balance. CATHOLIC INTELLECTUAL TRADITION As Australia s leading Catholic university, ACU is fortunate to be supported by the richness of more than 2,000 years of Catholic intellectual tradition. As a member of the International Federation of Catholic Universities, we are devoted, through research as well as teaching, to communicating truth in every field of knowledge, and to promote the dignity of all people and the common good. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Community engagement is a key part of a student s education at ACU. In every course across every faculty, community engagement is a part of the core curriculum. This gives students the opportunity to widen their horizons, learn new skills, improve their resume, and make a difference in the wider community. 7

Alternative entry programs WHAT OTHER WAYS CAN I GET IN TO UNIVERSITY? All universities offer alternative ways for you to gain entry to university. So don t forget, that Year 10 is a great time for you to be thinking about what things you can do now, and in Year 11 and 12 this information will assist in gaining alternative entry to university. No matter what state you live in, your local TAC (VTAC, UAC, QTAC) has entry schemes that can give you extra consideration when applying for university. Some of these are listed in the Uni terminology section of this publication, for example, Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) and Educational Access Scheme (EAS). Things to possibly consider include volunteering in your community and becoming a leader that makes a difference within your school. Make sure you ask your career adviser at school about different things you can get involved in now. Below are ACU s alternative entry programs available to you: 1 access ACU accessacu - is a bonus point scheme open to current Year 12 students that aims to improve access to higher education. Through the scheme, you may be awarded up to five bonus points toward your entry score if you have performed particularly well in Year 12 subjects that are relevant to your chosen course of study. These bonus points are automatically applied through the relevant Tertiary Admissions Centre there is no need to apply separately. Go to www.acu.edu.au/accessacu 2 Early Achievers Program (EAP) is designed to reward prospective students who have a commitment to the common good and have a willingness to make a contribution to their communities. ACU believes students are worth more than your score, and you should be recognised for your community contribution and leadership potential. One of the biggest benefits of the program is that successful applicants receive an early offer (in November), rather than when first round offers are released (January). Go to www.acu.edu.au/eap Regional and 3 Disadvantaged School Regional and Disadvantaged School - bonus points may be received for eligible applicants who live in regional areas and/or who attended schools that have been identified by a relevant State/Territory government as disadvantaged in some way. This may be because they cannot offer the same variety of school subjects as their more urban counterparts due to distance, or for some other similar reason. Up to five bonus points may be awarded under this scheme. Bonus points are awarded automatically through each Tertiary Admission Centre there is no need to apply separately. Go to www.acu.edu.au/accessacu 4 Campus Bonus points Campus Bonus - applicants may be eligible to receive five bonus points based on the school location and proximity from campus. These bonus points are automatically applied through the relevant Tertiary Admissions Centre there is no need to apply separately. Go to www.acu.edu.au/accessacu 5 Elite Athletes Program Elite Athletes Program - is a program designed to recognise the hard work and commitment that you as an elite athlete have put in to your sport, during your Yr 11 and 12 studies. Please go to the ACU website for further detail on what is involved in the process and the definition of an elite athlete. Go to www.acu.edu.au/accessacu Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Special 6 Entry Scheme Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Special Entry Scheme - If you are an Indigenous Australian or Torres Strait Islander, you may be given special entry to ACU based on your potential to succeed in the relevant course. No separate application is required provided you identify as an Indigenous Australian through the online TAC application process. You may be required to attend an interview. Go to www.acu.edu.au/accessacu Note: Campus Bonus is only available to Year 12 students. Also, applicants can receive a combined maximum of five points for Campus Bonus and Regional and Disadvantaged Schools. For further information on the above programs, please go to www.acu.edu.au 8
