Preapproval is required for custom projects, building optimization services and targeted industrial system optimization. After installation of your new purchase has been completed, send in the appropriate MidAmerican Energy rebate form with a copy of your sales receipt or itemized invoice. Note that some products and services may require additional documentation, such as a yellow EnergyGuide label. These additional requirements are noted on each rebate application form. Rebate forms for products and services that typically are completed by an equipment dealer/installer can be obtained directly from that place of business. All rebate forms are available online at www.midamericanenergy.com/iowa_forms. Rebate applications must be submitted within six months of dealer invoice for the equipment/material purchased. You also can call our rebate processing center at 800-894-9599 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to have forms sent to you. Get your rebate faster Follow these easy steps before mailing your rebate form. Accurate and complete rebate forms mean your rebate will arrive sooner. n Complete all information on the rebate form, such as manufacturer s name, model and serial number, if applicable. n Sign and date the Customer Agreement section. n Include the EnergyGuide label for equipment, if applicable. n Include the NFRC label for windows, if applicable. n Include Building Assessment Details form for insulation rebate. n Include a copy of the itemized sales receipt for materials and labor. n Circle rebate-eligible items on the receipt. n Retain a copy of the rebate form and receipts for your records. n If you have questions about a rebate form, contact your dealer or call 800-894-9599. COMMERCIAL ENERGY SOLUTIONS Improve the performance of your commercial building through MidAmerican Energy s Commercial Energy Solutions program services. This program promotes comprehensive energy efficiency for existing commercial buildings of all sizes through free energy assessments and building optimization services. You can increase your property values by lowering your monthly operating costs and investing in advanced efficiency technologies, while improving building operation and comfort. Did you know? Thirty percent! That s the amount of energy the average commercial building wastes. If you ve never done anything to save energy in your building, chances are you have a lot of room to improve. In fact, it s often possible to reduce energy use by 10 percent with little or no cost. Capture easy wins by starting with simple changes, like adjusting temperature set points and making sure lights aren t on when no one s around. ENERGY ASSESSMENTS The assessment is customized to your building size and business needs and includes a review of the facility s operating equipment and systems. At the end of the assessment you ll receive a customized report that arms your business with a prioritized, actionable plan for saving energy and reducing operating costs. Each recommendation includes estimated energy and cost savings, project cost, potential rebates and simple payback. Incentives n Equipment rebates The energy assessment report connects customers to prescriptive and custom rebates as outlined in the nonresidential equipment programs. n Enhanced incentives Bonus rebates are available when multiple projects are completed. n Direct-install measures for small businesses Gain immediate cost savings! BUILDING OPTIMIZATION SERVICES Building optimization services are powerful but often underutilized tools for enhancing building operations and increasing efficiency through low- or no-cost measures and practices. MidAmerican Energy offers two optimization options to meet the needs of commercial buildings: Express Building Tune-Up for smaller buildings and Retrocommissioning for larger, more complex facilities. 2
Express Building Tune-Up This service targets smaller buildings that can achieve superior results from simple retrocommissioning strategies and operator training without having to incur the expense of capital investments to replace or abandon systems. Participating buildings typically are <100,000 sq. ft., have rooftop units and are free of major problems requiring costly repairs or replacement of equipment. The goal of an Express Building Tune-Up is to find easy-to-fix items that will enhance building performance and reduce energy consumption. Examples of corrective measures include: Scheduling programmable thermostats Adjusting/adding economizers Repairing failed actuators Adjusting minimum outside air percentages Retrocommissioning This service targets larger and more complex commercial buildings that can achieve superior results from intensive retrocommissioning strategies and operator training without having to incur the expense of capital investments to replace or abandon systems. Participating buildings typically are >100,000 sq. ft., have a central heating and cooling system, a functional energy management system with direct digital controls and are free of major problems requiring costly repairs or replacement of equipment. The goal of traditional retrocommissioning is to optimize existing building systems and reduce energy consumption. Examples of corrective measures include: Optimizing economizer and ventilation controls Improving equipment sequencing and scheduling Optimizing fans and pumps Incentives MidAmerican Energy will fund 50 percent of the express building tune-up survey or retrocommissioning study, and additional incentives are earned based on energy savings ($0.05/kWh and $0.20/therm) from implemented projects. Incentives are capped at the lesser of: n 70 percent of total study and implementation cost n $0.20/square foot of building space Building Operator Certification Building Operator Certification is a nationally recognized training and certification program focused on energy-efficient building operations and preventive maintenance procedures. BOC training provides building operators with the skills and knowledge to incorporate energy efficiency into their operations and maintenance practices to reduce energy usage and costs. MidAmerican Energy offers a maximum rebate of $650 to eligible participants ($390 for electric-only customers, $260 for natural gas-only customers). INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS Receive expert advice and engineering assistance to improve the energy performance of your facilities and production processes by participating in MidAmerican Energy s Industrial Partners program. Manufacturing facilities of any size may receive a no-cost, facilitywide energy assessment, fully-funded system optimization studies for qualifying industrialscale systems, recommendations for energy-saving improvements, and other services to help you reduce energy-related costs. As an Industrial Partner, you ll receive the support you need to identify energy-saving opportunities, effectively manage a long-term energy plan and achieve your energy goals. QUALIFICATIONS See general qualifications on Pages 20-21. Program-specific qualifications n Custom projects and targeted system optimization must receive preapproval prior to purchase, installation or implementation to qualify for incentives. n The combination of a standard rebate and bonus incentive may not reduce the simple payback period for a project to less than one year, and the total incentive cannot exceed 80 percent of the eligible project cost. n An on-site building assessment is required prior to beginning an insulation project in order to qualify for an insulation rebate. Any improvements made prior to the assessment are ineligible. Refer to Page 7 for information about insulation rebates. Incentives n Technical assistance Free engineering assistance is provided as a service to you, including completion of a no-cost facility energy assessment to identify cost-effective energy-saving opportunities. n Implementation support If you re an energy-intensive customer, you could qualify for dedicated energy management assistance to further support your aggressive implementation goals. n System optimization You may be eligible for no-cost system optimization studies for the following minimum loads and operations: Compressed air: 250 horsepower of nonbackup compressed air capacity Industrial refrigeration: 500 horsepower of nonbackup compressor capacity Process cooling: 500 horsepower of nonbackup cooling equipment n Equipment rebates You are eligible for prescriptive and custom rebates as outlined in the nonresidential equipment programs. n Insulation rebates An on-site building assessment is required. AGRIBUSINESS If you re searching for ways to lower your monthly energy bills and offset equipment costs, look no further than MidAmerican Energy s Agribusiness program. The program offers you a no-cost energy assessment to determine and prioritize energy efficiency improvements, rebates to help offset the cost to purchase energy-efficient equipment and expert technical assistance. ENERGY ASSESSMENT It all starts with a free energy assessment for your agribusiness. Schedule an energy assessment and we ll arrange for an on-site visit from an energy expert to help you identify ways to reduce your energy use and provide a report for energy-saving actions, cost estimates (including lowor no-cost suggestions), and estimates of energy-savings potential. Incentives n Direct-install measures Gain immediate cost savings. Our energy expert may install energy efficiency measures at no cost, as appropriate. n Equipment rebates Some agribusinesses are able to capture big energy savings by installing high-efficiency motors, fans and lighting. Rebates reduce the cost of equipment upgrades and make it more affordable to install energy-efficient technologies included in our prescriptive programs; refer to the equipment, lighting, motors and variable-speed drives programs in this booklet for qualifying equipment and measures. n Insulation rebates An on-site building assessment is required. Refer to Page 7 for details. Custom Equipment If specific equipment you intend to purchase and install is not listed, it may qualify under Nonresidential Equipment Custom Systems. MULTIFAMILY HOUSING Investing in energy efficiency can add value to your properties and increase your lease occupancy rate. Lower energy bills are attractive to existing and potential tenants. ENERGY ASSESSMENT MidAmerican Energy offers a suite of energy efficiency services to address the unique needs of multifamily properties. These services include: Free energy assessments Rebates on energy-efficient equipment and materials for property owners Rebates on energy-efficient equipment and materials for tenants During the assessment, the energy expert may install basic energy efficiency improvements for tenant units and common areas at no cost. The expert will recommend energy-saving opportunities and provide information on available incentives. The expert also will create a formal assessment report for the owner or property manager that includes: Recommendations for energy-saving opportunities Cost estimates (incorporating low- or no-cost suggestions) Estimates of energy-savings potential QUALIFICATIONS See general qualifications on Pages 20-21. Program-specific qualifications n Facilities must be built before Jan. 1, 2005. n The building must have four or more living units, such as: An apartment complex Condominiums n An on-site building assessment is required prior to beginning an insulation project in order to qualify for an insulation rebate. Any improvements made prior to the assessment are ineligible. Refer to Page 7 for information about insulation rebates. Note: For new construction of residential apartments/condominiums three stories or less, see the For Your Home booklet, Page 13, for additional information. For equipment placed in individual living units, see the For Your Home booklet. The program uses a comprehensive assessment approach with all living units and common areas. No rebates for attic/roof/ceiling insulation above Iowa Energy Code. n Insulation added directly on top of suspended ceilings does not qualify. n Radiant barriers are not eligible. n Insulation is to be installed evenly and consistently throughout the attic and to not extend beyond the eaves. n Damming material should be added to prevent insulation from restricting attic ventilation from soffit vents and to keep insulation from heat sources such as flues, lighting, etc. For Sidewall Insulation n There must be no existing insulation installed to participate. n There are no rebates for sidewall insulation above Iowa Energy Code. How to apply for rebates After the assessment is complete and insulation is installed, submit the Building Assessment Details and Rebate Application form to the appropriate program contact listed on the form along with the contractor s invoices.
CURTAILMENT The EnergyAdvantage Curtailment program is designed to allow MidAmerican Energy s large commercial and industrial customers in Iowa to receive financial incentives for reducing peak electrical demand. The Curtailment program is designed to help manage demand for electricity June through September, typically the hottest months of the year. n Your MidAmerican Energy key account manager contacts your company to warn you of potential peak periods two to 12 hours before actual events may begin. n During curtailment events, you must reduce your company s use of electricity supplied by MidAmerican Energy by your contract amount (at least 250 kw). This reduction can be achieved by: Limiting air conditioning Reducing or shifting the operation of other equipment Using auxiliary on-site electrical generation Curtailment incentives are based on the contracted kw reduced during peak periods and are payable as rebates at the end of the peak energy season following performance analysis. COMMERCIAL NEW CONSTRUCTION Make energy efficiency part of your next design. MidAmerican Energy s Commercial New Construction program provides complimentary energy design assistance and financial incentives to help offset the cost of implementing energy-efficient strategies. Project Prescreening To qualify, your project must be: n New construction, an addition or a major renovation with a mechanical system replacement n Early enough in the design process to implement energy analysis results n Larger than 5,000 square feet n Heated and/or cooled by a participating Iowa utility n Able to achieve savings that are at least 15 percent better than energy code baseline Note: Projects that do not qualify for the Commercial New Construction program may be eligible for Nonresidential Equipment program rebates. Incentives n Free energy design assistance Participants receive complimentary energy design assistance and a customized energy model that simulates energy use for the project demonstrating which efficiency strategies have the greatest impact and are most cost-effective. Through a series of meetings, strategies are selected by the owner and design team, with the assistance of an energy design consultant. Building systems analyzed include: Daylighting controls Building envelope Heating and cooling Outside air control Lighting controls and design Load-responsive equipment Outside air control Window glazing and layouts n Design team incentive $1,000 to $8,500, depending on project intensity and program involvement n Construction incentive $.06 - $.19 per kwh and $.60 - $1.90 per therm, increasing as energy savings percentage increases How to apply for rebates Complete the screening form at www.midamericanenergy.com/iowa_cnc or call 877-939-1874. Program-specific qualifications n Commercial projects must be located in MidAmerican Energy Company s Iowa service territory and pass screening to qualify. n Any project that experiences a six-month delay in design prior to selecting a bundle of energyefficient strategies may require a new application and requalification under current project terms. n Project incentives cannot exceed 70 percent of total bundle incremental cost, buy down a project below a one-year simple payback, or exceed $1 million per building. 9
BUILDING SHELL Keep your building cool in the summer and warm in the winter by upgrading your building shell. Windows MEASURE DESCRIPTION Energy-Efficient Windows Lesser of $25/window or 80% of installed cost n Windows need to have a U-factor better than (more efficient) Iowa Energy Code to receive a rebate. Fixed pane windows are treated as per window. For instance, a window opening with four fixed panes is treated as four windows. Minimum five square feet, measured by opening size, not just glass area. How to apply for rebates Download the application and include product specifications, dated invoices and installation date(s) and submit to MidAmerican Energy. Also include the NFRC labels for windows. Once the equipment is installed and your application is reviewed and approved by MidAmerican Energy, your rebate check will be issued. Allow 4-6 weeks for processing. Program-specific qualifications n Customer must submit a National Fenestration Rating Council label for each style of window with the rebate application. n The U-factor must be better (more efficient) than Iowa Energy Code to qualify for a rebate. n The SHGC must be equal to or lower than Iowa Energy Code to qualify. n Rebate will be prorated based on the type of energy purchased from MidAmerican Energy Company. Both fuels 100 percent; split is 65 percent natural gas; 35 percent electric. 10
NONRESIDENTIAL EQUIPMENT CUSTOM SYSTEMS Energy costs are a crucial part of the bottom line of any business. If you purchase energy for your Iowa business from MidAmerican Energy, you can save money on energy bills and conserve energy through a variety of programs and rebates. Rebates are available for qualifying lighting, heating and cooling equipment, motors, variable-speed drives, insulation, windows and kitchen equipment for commercial, institutional, industrial and agribusiness facilities served by MidAmerican Energy. HEATING & COOLING EQUIPMENT Invest in the energy efficiency of your business or agribusiness with short-term incentives and long-term savings. MidAmerican Energy rebates reduce the out-of-pocket costs of installing new energy-efficient equipment, which saves you money over the life of the equipment by reducing monthly energy bills and making your business environment more comfortable. However, customers with monthly metering under the Monthly Metered Transportation Service natural gas tariff are eligible for natural gas incentives. n Qualifying equipment must be new, installed on the premises and must not be purchased for resale. n Customers are responsible for ensuring that the equipment installed for these programs meets all applicable codes, standards and regulatory requirements. n Equipment must be installed and operating prior to submission of final rebate application, except for motors purchased for spare inventory. Installations must meet the standards referenced in the individual program guidelines. n Customers may not receive custom rebates in lieu of prescriptive rebates. n Custom projects require preapproval by MidAmerican Energy Company; projects must be completed within 12 months of preapproval. All custom projects must be deemed cost-effective by MidAmerican Energy Company in order to be eligible for a rebate. n For custom projects, the rebate will equal 25 percent of the incremental cost of the project or an amount which will buy down the payback period to 25 percent of the project s useful life, whichever is greater, not to exceed 60 percent of the eligible project cost. Customers will receive the lesser of the calculated customer rebate or 60 percent of the eligible project cost, and the rebate may not reduce the simple payback for the project to less than two years. n For prescriptive rebates, the rebate payment cannot exceed 70 percent of the installed cost (reasonable labor and material/equipment - reasonableness to be determined by MidAmerican Energy Company). n Prescriptive rebates will be based on the rebate schedule in effect on the date of dealer invoice for the equipment/material purchased. n Prescriptive rebate applications must be submitted within six months of dealer invoice for the equipment/material purchased. Some exceptions apply for New Construction, multiyear or multiphase projects. For these types of projects, preauthorization for the exception must be obtained by the customer from MidAmerican Energy Company. Rebate applications received after six months of dealer invoice will not be eligible for rebates. n Rebate checks will be issued to the building owner or account holder. 20
n Itemized and dated invoices from the contractor must accompany equipment applications. Specification sheets also are required for all equipment. Applications must be completed in full; incomplete applications will delay processing and may be returned. Applications for equipment must include the equipment manufacturer s name, model/serial number, efficiency rating and the quantity of high-efficiency equipment installed. n All project installations with rebates exceeding $20,000 will be reviewed for on-site verification of installation by MidAmerican Energy Company or its agent prior to issuance of rebate. n Allow 4-6 weeks for rebate processing. n Rebates may be subject to income tax. Consult your tax advisor for more information. n MidAmerican Energy Company reserves the right to conduct on-site verification of equipment installation, install metering devices on new equipment, and to verify sales receipts and other project documentation at any time before or after issuing a rebate. n MidAmerican Energy Company does not endorse any particular manufacturer, product or system design in promoting this incentive program.
