Job description This project takes the form of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) (http://www.ktponline.org.uk/), which provides you with extensive practical and formal training and the availability of support from experienced mentors from Phoebus Software, Aston University and Innovate UK. As a KTP Associate on this project you will have a generous personal development budget in addition to a KTP Management Training Programme. Aston University has joined forces with Phoebus on this project to radically transform software development within Phoebus from their compiled proprietary 4GL architecture to modern software engineering standards and techniques. As part of this project you will be able to develop skills in transformation tool development, agile software development practices and industrial-strength programming along with real-world architectural design. You will develop an understanding of complex systems, particularly in the area of automated translation of software. You will be encouraged to join and work towards Chartered status of an appropriate professional body such as the British Computer Society (BCS) or the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). You will be employed by Aston University working under the supervision of Dr Michal Konečný, Lecturer in Computer Science and will be based at the company, Phoebus Software in Solihull under the supervision of Mr Andrew Middleton. Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of all aspects of the project, keeping all the project stakeholders informed of project progress through regular project management meetings. A summary of the project work plan which the KTP Associate will work to is detailed below. Review of business and technical issues and creation of a Steering Group for the project. Review of software development methods with report on issues to be addressed and directions for future software development. Implement improvements in current tools and processes. Delivery of new tools for use with P4 based software to allow fully web browser compatible user interfaces. Develop a P4 application and translate it to Java Java application with analogous functionality as the P4 application with web (cloud) interface. Java application design report, checking and embedding. Create, check and embed a toolbox and methodology for developing a translator, validated by a preliminary translator program. Polish the translator and equip it with a test suite. Enhance the translator to support more products resulting in Translator version 2 verified by two products that utilise the new technology. Reports and manuals produced for new technology. These to be approved by Steering Group and embedded in PSL development and quality manuals. Translator deployed for commercial exploitation, reports, papers and training delivered.

Person specification Education and qualifications Experience Essential A PhD in Computer Science or programme analysis or programming language theory. Practical and conceptual understanding of objectoriented software design using Java, C# or C++. Method of assessment Application form Application form, interview and presentation Aptitude and skills Problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to think at several levels of abstraction in one context. Capable of articulating complex ideas and correctly interpreting developers and users requirements. Good interpersonal skills on enable strong working relationships with colleagues and clients. Excellent communication and presentation skills. Ability to show initiative, be self-motivated and work autonomously to agreed targets and goals. Willingness and aptitude to take ownership of all aspects of the projects such as administration, budgeting, project management and communication. Salary & benefits The post is offered on a full time, fixed term basis for 30 months from the start date. The salary range is 26,000-30,000 per annum, plus 5,000 individual training budget. Holiday entitlement Pension Contribution pay Relocation 25 days per annum, in addition to 8 days public and university holidays. Eligible staff are offered a defined benefit pension with the University Superannuation Scheme. The University s Performance Development and Reward Scheme provides for salary enhancement for staff who are considered to be performing at an exceptional level on a consistent basis. Staff are normally required to establish residence within reasonable daily travelling distance of the host company, Up to 500 relocation allowance is available for reimbursement for removal and other expenses incurred by newly-appointed staff in moving to the host area.
