Greenpeace UK employs approximately 150 people at its offices in Canonbury Villas, Islington. Staff work in areas as diverse as campaigns, media, fundraising, mobilisation, administration, finance, Human Resources and direct actions. The Greenpeace office has been purpose-designed and aims to provide the best possible working conditions on an environmentally sound basis. We have a vegetarian café four days/week serving organic food for staff and visitors. Greenpeace currently has over 140,000 supporters in the UK and is funded by supporter subscriptions and donations from individuals. JOB DESCRIPTION POST: UNIT: Arctic Oil Campaigner Programme RESPONSIBLE TO: Project Leader, Arctic Team OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB: To work as part of the Arctic team, towards the successful achievement of campaign objectives and strategy. To be the principle knowledge holder and team expert on Arctic oil and ensure that this information is used to strengthen the Arctic campaign. To generate Arctic oil news stories through investigative and analytical work and ensure that new stories are communicated to our key audiences. To be a proactive member of an international community of Greenpeace Arctic oil campaigners sharing information and jointly developing the international oil strategy. MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Campaign knowledge holder and oil specialist Develop a deep understanding of Arctic oil exploration and track new developments. Establish a culture of knowledge sharing, discussion, and group learning within the wider Arctic team. Write and maintain Greenpeace s public briefings on Arctic oil and help fact check supporter and media communications. Build or join existing Arctic and oil NGO networks. Oil Campaigner As part of an international team help deliver Greenpeace s Arctic oil strategy. Play a key role in the future development of the Arctic oil strategy and identify campaign opportunities and intervention points that help in the pursuit of the campaign objectives. Undertake specific campaign project work. Develop a series of investigation briefs and work with the Investigation unit, other Arctic campaigners, and the press officer to achieve news impact. Supervise external consultants, volunteers and/or staff from other parts of Greenpeace. Communication Ensure that Greenpeace is actively communicating about Arctic oil issues and developments through Greenpeace s key communication channels (news, social media, blogs). Act as a representative of Greenpeace to external bodies/the media as appropriate. Team working and knowledge sharing Develop strong working relationship with other Greenpeace Arctic specialists (political, investor, investigations, supporter, fundraising) Develop a good working relationship with campaigners from other Greenpeace offices. 5
Adapt role within team as appropriate, including playing supportive role to other members of the team as necessary. Take full part in the self-evaluation of team campaign projects at their completion. Accept joint responsibility for the administration of the campaign team and take on specific tasks as delegated by the Arctic Team Leader. WORKING FOR GREENPEACE STAFF TERMS AND CONDITIONS AND BENEFITS SALARY It is our standard practice to offer a starting salary at the first point of the grade. This post has a salary range of 35,700 to 41,796 if you work full time. Part time roles will be pro-rated according to the hours worked per week. Increments are awarded each January subject to satisfactory service and the post holder having been in post for a minimum of six months and the maximum point of the grade has not been reached. Any agreed cost of living increases are normally applied, subject to Board approval, in January each year. Salaries are paid on the 19 th of each month monthly via bank credit transfer. WORKING HOURS The full time working hours are 37.5 per week. There may be occasions when these hours are exceeded and unsocial or additional hours may be required. Overtime is not paid, but time off in lieu can be negotiated with your line manager. LEAVE Annual leave is 25 days per year plus one additional day for every full year of employment up to a maximum of 7 additional days. Leave is calculated on a pro-rata basis for part time staff. We also offer generous parental and special leave. PENSION SCHEME Greenpeace runs a contributory Pension Scheme held with Aviva for the benefit of its employees, with optional Salary Sacrifice. Greenpeace contributes 8.5% of your basic salary, provided the employee contributes at least 3%. From 1 st August 2014 the government requires employers to automatically enroll eligible workers into a workplace pension scheme. Further details about the Pension Scheme, the option of Salary Sacrifice plus the government autoenrolment scheme will be made available to the successful candidate. PROBATIONARY PERIOD All new employees are required to undertake a period of probation for six months, in which time you will be expected to establish your suitability for the post.
