Schools Remote Access Server This system is for school use only. Not for personal or private file use. Please observe all of the school district IT rules. 6076 State Farm Rd., Guilderland, NY 12084 Phone: 518/456-6200
This document will explain the basic use of the remote server. This manual is for the complete district and will have both server addresses used in different places. Please Note This is the middle school! https://fmsremote.guilderlandschools.org/netstorage This is the high school https://ghsremote.guilderlandschools.org/netstorage.
Enter appropriate web address from above in your web browser When the Security Alert certificate is displayed select the yes button and continue to the login screen.
At the login page you MUST enter your school login name with a leading period then your login name followed by a period then the context that your user account lives in, then followed by a another period and the tree name { fms } with no period behind fms. (High school uses.loginname.staff.ghs) Enter your school login user password and click ok.
After you have logged in you will see your home folder and the primary mapped drive that you have rights to at the school. They will have a different name than the ones in this manual. This is only an example. To open or expand on these drives you can click on the plus sign in the left column or double click on the name in the middle.
You can continue down the tree until you find the file that you wish to retrieve. Remember you will be bringing that file to your computer to be worked on and then you must upload it back to the server if you want to have the changed file at the school.
At this point to retrieve the file, right click or select File and select download.
If your browser has the new security enhancements you will see the new bar below the address bar that indicates that Explorer has blocked the download. From here you can right click on that bar and select download, but you will be force to repeat the steps taken above.
There is a solution! If you hold down the LEFT Control key on your key board, Explorer does not interfere with your request to down load the file!
As you hold down the left control key and then right clicked on the file this will be the next screen you will see. DO NOT LET GO OF THE CONTROL KEY YET! While still holding down the control key select save. After that you can release the control key. These are not functions of the remote services! This is controlled by Microsoft and beyond Our control! YOU CANNOT OPEN A FILE AND WORK ON IT. YOU MUST DOWNLOAD IT, MAKE CHANGES, AND UPLOAD IT BACK TO THE SERVER.
This will be the next screen. Select the location where you want to save the file. Click save. At this point you can open the folder or close this dialog box. The file is now on your computer in the folder you saved it in.
To upload your changes click on the drive and folder you want the file to go to. Then on File and upload. Remember an upload is totally dependent on the uplink speed of YOUR internet connection and can take a long time to complete. The download will be much faster. Please wait until it has finished.
The next screen that you will see is the browse screen where you will pick what file you want to upload. Click on the Browse button.
Select the directory and the file and then click open. In this screen you can verify that this is the file you wish to send back. At this point select Upload and please wait till it finishes. Again this can take some time.
All you will see as it is uploading is a blue progress bar at the bottom of the Upload File window, and the words at the bottom of that windows Opening page https://the_name_of_the_server.
When you are finished click the Logout button at the top of the screen. Please understand that file transfers are slow unless you have an internet connection that allows for a fast upload as well.
If you are having trouble uploading or downloading, please refer to the following troubleshooting suggestions; Depending upon your browser you will need to add this site to your allow lists within your browser settings or disable the protection. We do not recommend disabling any of the securities within the browser. You should ONLY add this site to the allow lists. Use the disable as a last resort.
With this in mind you can right click on the Explorer icon and select properties. Click on the Privacy tab, and on the lower right side click on Settings.
Within the Pop-up Blocker Settings you can add the site to the exceptions list. Do not add the https:// just add { *.guilderlandschools.org }. This will prevent Internet Explorer from displaying the Pop-up bar but will not change the security settings for the rest of the browser. This will not prevent the download blocker from working. This will be shown later.
The next step is to add the website to the Trusted sites. Chose the Security tab, select the Trusted sites, click on the Sites button. Here you add { https://fmsremote.guilderlandschools.org } to this list. Click ok until the windows close.
