The Eagles, who finished second in the Ohio Valley Conference race, earned one of two double-byes and begin play in the 011 OVC Tournament in Friday s semifinal game. MSU will play the winner of the quarterfinal game between #3 Austin Peay (which received a single bye into the quarterfinals) and the first round matchup of #6 Eastern Kentucky or #7 Southeast Missouri. The Eagles play in Friday s second semifinal, a 10 p.m. Eastern tip-off on ESPNU. Morehead State (-9; 13-5) split the regular season with two of the three of their potential semifinal opponents. Austin Peay beat MSU in overtime in Clarksville before losing at Morehead. Eastern Kentucky stole a win in Morehead, but the Eagles returned the favor in Richmond, winning in overtime. MSU swept SEMO this season. Murray State (#1), Tennessee Tech (#4), Tennessee State (#5) and UT Martin (#8) also qualified for the tournament and are all potential championship matchups for the Eagles, should they win Friday. A loss most likely relegates MSU to one of the three other postseason tournaments, the NIT, CBI or CIT. Morehead State won 10 of its final 11 games, losing only to top-seeded Murray State on the Racers home floor. The Eagles won those games by an average of 9.9 points, and were led by OVC Player of the Year senior Kenneth Faried with 17.6 points per game and 14.3 rebounds per game and fellow senior Demonte Harper s 15.4 points per game. Junior Terrance Hill has been a scoring threat and defensive stopper during that span as well, tallying double digits in seven of the 11 games. The Eagles are 5-3 in the OVC Tournament under coach Donnie Tyndall, with all five wins coming in the previous two years, both of which led to an appearance in the finals. The Eagles hold the mark for most points in a game and it s a record that s stood for 55 years. In 1955, MSU defeated former OVC member Middle Tennessee State 13-68. TOURNEY TIME Morehead State is 4-37 all-time in the OVC Tournament, but under Tyndall the Eagles are a positive 5-3. MSU has won OVC Tournament titles in 1983, 1984 and 009. SEEDING THE FIELDS Morehead State has been the No. seed four times since seeding began in 1975. The Eagles are 6-3 as the second seed, winning the 1983 championship and losing in the semifinals in 00 and 003. MSU went -1 as the two seed last year. SEMIFINAL SORROWS Morehead State has struggled in the OVC Tournament semifinals. The Eagles are 5-17 in the round prior to the championship. Prior to the 009 win over UT Martin, MSU had not won a semifinal game since 1984 (also the last time before last year the Eagles won a title). Dating back to the beginning of the OVC tourney in the 1940s, it took Morehead seven tries before it won its first semifinal. FINAL EXAMS On the flip side, in the five times Morehead State has gotten past the semifinals, the Eagles have won three championships. MSU is 3- all-time in OVC Tournament finals, having beaten Austin Peay (009), Youngstown State (1984), Akron (1983) and losing to Murray State (010) and Western Kentucky (1976). Three of the Eagles five title-game appearances have been against former OVC schools. ALL-TOURNAMENT DROUGHT When Kenneth Faried and Demonte Harper each were named to the OVC All-Tournament team in 009, it broke a slump of 15 years. MSU s last All-Tournament selection prior to the 009 tournament year came at the 1994 tournament when Tyrone Boardley was named to the team. Last year Faried and Maze Stallworth were named All-Tournament. NOT MANY MUNICIPAL WINS In the six years the OVC Tournament has been played at Municipal Auditorium, MSU has a 1-5 record in the building. That lone win came in the 1994 tournament against Eastern Kentucky. The Eagles got a win in the 004 tournament, which was at Municipal, but that win came in the first round and was played at campus home sites. ANYTHING YOU CAN DO I CAN DO BETTER Morehead State s men s basketball team has had company in the win department all season long and that won t change in Nashville. The Morehead State women, the No. 3 seed, will play the Jacksonville State/Tennessee State in Thursday s quarterfinals. If the MSU women win Thursday, it will be the sixth time in school history that both teams have advanced to the semifinals. It also happened in 198, 1983, 1984, 00 and last season. Only one of those years resulted in a dual trip to the finals, 1983. PRESEASON AWARDS PLAY OUT Kenneth Faried and Demonte Harper both earned preseason all-conference nods and Faried was named the 010-11 OVC Preseason Player of the Year. All of those predictions came to fruition as both players were honored Tuesday by the OVC. Both Faried and Harper were named First Team All-Conference and Faried earned the Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. SPEAKING OF AWARDS Morehead State has had different players earn All-OVC Tournament. That list includes: 1949: Sonny Allen 1950: Sonny Allen, Bill Martin 1951: Jack Baker, Don Miller 195: Elza Whalen 1953: Lindle Castle, Elza Whalen 1954: Dan Swartz 1955: Steve Hamilton 1964: Henry Akin 1966: Bruce King, Jim Sandfoss 1967: Larry Jordan 1976: Ted Hundley 1980: Charlie Clay 1983: Guy Minnifield (MVP), Earl Harrison 1984: Earl Harrison (MVP), Arthur Sullivan 199: Doug Bentz 1994: Tyrone Boardley 009: Kenneth Faried (MVP), Demonte Harper 010: Kenneth Faried, Maze Stallworth 40 BOARDS EQUALS WINS IN HOARDS Under Donnie Tyndall, the Eagles have had 37 games in which they have had 40 or more rebounds in a game. In those games, the Eagles hold a 7-9 mark. Last season the Eagles were 1-1 when pulling down 40 caroms and this year MSU is 7-4 in those games.

Tyndall Tidbits MSU has improved steadily each year under Tyndall s tutelage. His first team was 1-18 and his second improved to 15-15. In 008-09, the Eagles were 0-16 and last year he was 4-11. Tyndall is only the third MSU coach to take an Eagle team to the NCAA Tournament. Tyndall is the winningest coach in school history after his first five years. He surpassed Laughlin (81 wins) for best start in his first five years. He is also only the third MSU coach to lead his team to 0 wins, and he is the quickest of those three coaches to post a 0-win season, having done it in three years. He also is the first MSU coach to have back-to-back 0-win seasons. Tyndall and Morehead State Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson made an agreement that MSU would be competing for a championship in Tyndall s fourth season. Tyndall exceeded expectations by winning the OVC title in his third year. Tyndall joined former MSU coach Bobby Laughlin in reaching the NCAA Tournament within three years. In four years as a head coach, Tyndall has only had one losing season, his first with Morehead State. His second season with MSU was a.500 year and the past two years at MSU were 0-win seasons. In his first year as a head coach (at St. Catharine) he had 30 wins. Tyndall is 60-9 in Ohio Valley Conference games since being named MSU head coach. His teams have posted 1-win conference seasons in four of his five years. He has been tough to beat at Johnson Arena. Tyndall is 60-15 at home as head coach at Morehead State. Tyndall was a Top 0 finalist in the voting for Lexington Herald-Leader s Kentucky Sportsman of the Year. Under Tyndall s guidance, the Eagles have improved each season, with back-to-back postseason appearances and Morehead State s first OVC Tournament title and NCAA bid since 1984. In returning the Eagles to prominence, Tyndall led MSU over Alabama State in the NCAA Tournament Opening Round, the first NCAA Tournament win for an OVC team since 1989. Tyndall s 009-10 team posted the second most wins in school history with 4, finishing 4-11 overall. MSU also broke the school s record for OVC win total with 15, finishing 15-3 in league play. The Eagles advanced to the OVC title game for the second straight year and finished the season by playing in the College Basketball Invitational, during which MSU defeated Colorado State. Tyndall is the first coach in MSU history to have back-to-back 0-win seasons and just the second coach in school history to win two postseason games. The 008-09 Eagles finished with a 0-16 overall record, the first time since 00-03 that a Morehead State team has reached 0 wins. Tyndall is only the third coach in school history to have a 0-win season, and he is the only coach to accomplish the feat in fewer than four years. Tyndall s first Morehead State team more than tripled the win total from the previous year. The 006-07 Eagles were picked 11th in the Ohio Valley Conference but finished seventh and advanced to the conference tournament for the first time in three seasons. The 007-08 team continued the steady progress by picking up 15 wins and finishing third in the conference standings even though it was picked 10th in the preseason league rankings. The season was highlighted by a 10-0 start in Johnson Arena. That start matched the best start at home in school history. Tyndall has led an impressive turnaround in the last four years, so good that it ranks as the top turnaround in Division I men s basketball. The Eagles RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) jumped a whopping 37 spots, from 31, which was where MSU was rated the year before Tyndall s arrival, to 84th last season. Well respected both in the Morehead community and within the college coaching ranks, Tyndall was named as one of the Top 10 Under the Radar coaches by Athlon Sports this year. He also served as the co-chair for the MSU Capital Campaign in 009 and was a Top 0 finalist in the voting for Lexington Herald-Leader s Kentucky Sportsman of the Year in 009. An MSU alumnus who was a basketball letterwinner, he is the 1th head coach in the history of the Eagle program. He returned to his alma mater from the position of associate head coach at Middle Tennessee State University where he had served for four years. A NCAA Division I assistant coach for nearly 10 years, the 40-year-old Tyndall spent one season as associate head coach at the University of Idaho. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach for four seasons at Louisiana State University. In 1996-97, Tyndall served as head coach at St. Catharine College in Springfield, Ky., for a season. After graduating from MSU, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. At MTSU, Tyndall teamed with head coach Kermit Davis to lead the Blue Raiders to four consecutive winning seasons, averaging 17 wins a campaign. As recruiting coordinator, he directed MTSU recruiting efforts that resulted in two classes being ranked in the Top 5 nationally. Hoop Scoop ranked the 003 class 3rd, and the 004 class was ranked 11th nationally. Each class was selected as the number one class in the Sun Belt Conference by that basketball publication. While he was at Idaho, the Vandals 00 recruiting class was ranked as high as 15th nationally. Tyndall also served as scouting coordinator. As the individual in charge of academic progress, he helped the team earn a cumulative grade point average of.6 (on a 4.0 scale), the best at the school in more than a decade. During his tenure on John Brady s staff at LSU, Tyndall helped recruit three classes that were ranked among the Top 5 nationally. In 000, LSU won the SEC and advanced to the Sweet 16. Three of the recruited student-athletes went on to play in the NBA, five earned All-Southeast Conference honors, and five were named Academic All-SEC. As the Tigers academic coordinator, he helped improve the basketball team s grade point average from 1.7 in 1996 to.65 in 001. During his one season as head coach at St. Catharine, he led the team to a school-record 30-5 mark and to the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament for the first time in school history. Tyndall was named the Kentucky-Tennessee Junior College Coach of the Year and was also named the top coach in Region VII. Illustrating his emphasis on academic achievement, the team s grade point average improved from 1.81 to.64, and all six of the sophomores on the squad earned associate degrees. A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., Tyndall played at Northview High School, then one season at Iowa Central (1989-90). He was a member of Eagle teams for three seasons (1990-93). Tyndall played with Athletes in Action after completing his career at MSU. He earned a bachelor s degree from MSU (1993) and a master s degree from LSU. Tyndall has two daughters, Taylor Elise and Grace Elizabeth. 10

An honor reserved for leading scorers and All-Americans, Faried was named an AP Honorable Mention All-American after last season. REBOUNDING THE RECORD BOOK Now that he has the modern-era record, Faried is taking aim at the OVC and all-time NCAA rebounding marks. His career total of 1,607 ranks first all-time in Division I for players whose careers began after 1973 (when freshman became eligible to play). He passed Tim Duncan for first place on that list at Indiana State. He s 15th on the all-time list currently, and if his average holds, he will finish at least 1th among ALL players and has a chance to crack the top 10. He also ranks second all-time in the OVC, having passed WKU s Tom Marshall at ISU. As the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, Faried was nominated for the weekly USBWA award. Faried averaged 17.7 points and 18 rebounds while leading the Eagles to three wins over then first-place teams, including two key conference victories. TYNDALL TALLIES THE VICTORIES MSU bench boss Donnie Tyndall is the winningest coach in Morehead State history during his first five years (93 wins). This surpassed Bobby Laughlin s 81 wins for best start in his first five years. Tyndall entered the year with 71 wins and now has his 93rd MSU win. DANCING WITH THE STARS Morehead State s 010-11 schedule features four teams that played in the 010 NCAA men s basketball tournament. Florida, Ohio State, Murray State and Northern Iowa were participants in last year s Big Dance. Three of those teams; Ohio State, Murray State and UNI advanced to the second round and two of those teams, Ohio State and UNI played in the Sweet 16. Add in the four other postseason participants: Kent State (NIT), Eastern Kentucky (CBI), Indiana State (CBI) and College of Charleston (CBI) and it s been a tough road for the Eagles this season. MSU is 5-6 in those games so far this season. PLAYER OF THE WEEK OF ALL TIME When Kenneth Faried was selected as the OVC Player of the Week the week ending Jan. 30, it marked the 1th time in his career he s earned the award. He passed former UT Martin great Lester Hudson for the all-time most Player of the Week awards in the OVC. He now has won the award 15 total times AND AGAIN Faried also broke Hudson s record for the most awards in a single season. Faried earned his eighth OVC Player of the Week award. 1

Through Monday s NCAA rankings, the Eagles were fourth nationally in rebounding margin. MSU has been outrebounded just five times this season -- in the losses at UNC Wilmington, Northern Iowa and the wins at Indiana State, Ball State and at Tennessee Tech. This has been a strong trend for Tyndall-coached teams. Last year MSU led the OVC and was sixth nationally in rebounding margin. KENNETH CORRALS THE CAROMS Faried has pulled down 44 caroms this season to bring his career total to 1,607. He ranks as the number two all-time Eagle glass cleaner. He became only the third MSU player to reach 1,000 career rebounds with his third board at Austin Peay last season. He entered his senior year 510 rebounds from being the all-time leader. Last year s 456 boards was his best single season total (and the third best ever at MSU). Only Steve Hamilton, who is the career leader with 1,675, has had a single season with more than 500 rebounds at MSU. IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING... Faried is 68 rebounds from catching Hamilton. At his current pace (14.3 RPG), Faried needs five games to catch Hamilton. Those would all have to come in the postseason (counting the OVC Tournament). DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE, DOUBLE FARIED S FUN Kenneth Faried had 5 double-doubles last season which ranked him second in the nation and he has 4 this year, placing him first. He now has 8 career double-doubles (seven as a freshman, 5 his sophomore year, 5 last season, 5 this year). He is now among the top five all-time in the NCAA in total double-doubles and has a chance to tie or break Tim Duncan s all-time record of 87. He passed Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), Mel Counts, Jerry Lucas, Oscar Robertson, and Malik Rose. No. Player Final Year Years Played Double-Doubles 1. Tim Duncan, Wake Forest 1997 4 87. Oscar Robertson, Cincinnati 1960 3 79 DOUBLE-DOUBLE U Faried s 5 double-doubles are first in the nation, but it helps Morehead State boast another top ranking, this one unique. Combine his total with MSU women s basketball sophomore Ashar Harris, who has 0 double-doubles and ranks second in the country, and you get the best double-double athletic program in the country. No other school has a men s player and a women s player ranked in the top three of the double-doubles category. D-D-D-DE-FENSE Morehead State has been impressive defensively, allowing more than 70 points by an opponent just three times, the overtime game at Austin Peay, versus Binghamton and at Jacksonville State. It might have been most eye-popping against Florida and Ohio State. MSU held two top-10 teams under 65 points in back-to-back games, putting itself in a position to win both contests. MSU ranks second in the OVC and 31st nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 61.7 points per game. 60-POINT MEN Fourteen times this season the MSU defense has been so tenacious the Eagles have held their opponents under 60 points. Even more impressively, MSU has held five of those opponents under 50. Asbury, UT Martin, and College of Charleston were all stuck on 49, Ball State scored 48 and EIU scored just 47. SLAM GOODMAN Sam Goodman, who joined the team last year as a transfer, has used his athleticism to make an impact at both ends of the court. The senior is fourth on the team in scoring with 8.5 points per game, ranking 11th in the OVC in field goal percentage at 47.7 percent. Goodman also showed senior leadership before the Ball State game, requesting to not start, but instead provide a spark off the bench, and since then MSU has lost just once. Eagle fans also appreciate Goodman s highlight-reel dunking ability, which has TWICE earned him a spot on Sportscenter s Top Plays, once following the Ohio State game and once after the Eastern Illinois home game. 13

Tyndall, who was the first coach to have back-to-back 0-win seasons, is also the first coach to have three 0-win seasons. HOME SWEET HOME MSU is 60-15 at home under Donnie Tyndall. That includes a near perfect 14-1 mark this season. The Eagles had a 4-game home winning streak snapped against Eastern Kentucky that was fourth in the nation when it was stopped. EKU was the first team to win in Johnson Arena since Kent State did in 009-10, but MSU has still won 8 of the last 9 games at home. DEATH VALLEY MSU is even more impressive at Johnson Arena in conference play. This year MSU was 8-1 in home conference games and had back-to-back perfect OVC records in Johnson Arena in 008-09 and 009-10. Prior to the EKU game, MSU held a -game home OVC winning streak. Austin Peay was the last team to win in Johnson Arena, capturing the final game of the 007-08 season. ONE OF THREE Faried is one of only three OVC players to have more than 1,800 points and 1,500 rebounds. MSU great Steve Hamilton is also on the short prestigious list. He s closing in on being the first-ever,000-point, 1,600 rebound player. Player School Points Kenneth Faried Morehead State 1,950 points 1,607 rebounds Tom Marshall Western Kentucky 1,909 points 1,565 rebounds Steve Hamilton Morehead State 1,89 points 1,675 rebounds RANKED AMONG REBOUNDERS Faried finished ranked first in the OVC and second nationally with 13.0 rebounds per game last season. For the second straight year, he was the nation s top returning rebounder. The Newark, N.J., native also ranked third nationally in rebounding, averaging 13.0 boards per game in 008-09. This season he s averaging 14.3 boards per game through 31 games and again leads the OVC, and he s first nationally. STEALING THE SPOTLIGHT Kenneth Faried is not only a rebounding machine, he also is a master thief. The senior is second in the OVC and is 36th nationally with.0 steals per game. That included five steals against a good Ohio State team and four in the first meeting with Jacksonville State. SWIPER, MORE SWIPING Faried s prolific steals numbers are impressive, but they add up to an even more impressive team defensive stat. Demonte Harper and Terrance Hill join Faried in the top 15 in the OVC in steals (Harper also ranks 146th in the nation). Combined with their teammates, the two lead MSU to 8.6 swipes per game, which is second in the OVC and is 1st nationally. PLAY THE PERCENTAGES Add one more statistical highlight to Faried s docket. He ranks second in the nation in field goal percentage, hitting 63.7 percent of his shots. He actually ranks third in the OVC, but the NCAA s field goals made per game minimums are more stringent than the OVC s, hence the higher ranking. HARPER S BAZAAR Senior Demonte Harper exploded for 35 points against SIU Edwardsville, eclipsing his previous career high in points by 13. He nearly broke that with 34 points in the loss at Austin Peay, including a game-tying triple at the end of regulation. He added points against Murray State, and that featured a clutch 3-pointer that all but sealed an Eagle victory. He went through a 10-game streak where he surpassed 0 point six times and 30 points twice. He averaged 1.7 points per game in that span. He hit 3-pointers at a 58.7 percent clip and all field goals at 59.0 percent in those 10 games. DOUBLE-DIGIT DEMONTE Harper has scored in double-digits in of 31 games this season and 9 of 35 last year. In all, he s tallied double digits in 70 of the 131 games he has played in an Eagle uniform, but 51-of- 66 since the start of his junior season. He ranks second at MSU and fifth in the OVC in scoring with 15.4 points per game. 14

010-11 Morehead State Men s Basketball Recruits Orlando Coleman a 6-4, 180-pound guard/forward from Pleasant Grove, Ala., was an All-West Metro First Team selection for Pleasant Grove High School. As a senior he averaged 15.3 points,.0 assists, and 6.0 rebounds per game. Pleasant Grove finished the season as regional runners-up with a season record of 3-3, and at one point, the team won 30 straight games. Coleman was selected to four All-Tournament teams as a first-team selection. He was invited to play in the North/South All-Star game and was nominated to the Top 5 players in the West Area Metro Conference. Coleman was crowned Rumble On the Ridge Slam Dunk Contest Champion. EXCLUSIVE CLUB Demonte Harper entered the 010-11 season, his senior year, with 895 points and he s added 477 so far this year. He became the 30th player in MSU history to crack 1,000 career points. He now ranks 17th in scoring all-time at MSU. Harper also ranks fourth all-time at MSU in career assists, having moved into the top five with four dishes at SEMO. OVER THE HILL Terrance Hill, who is one of Morehead State s dead-eye 3-point shooters struggled early to find his stroke, but entering OVC play he got hot. Nine times this season (four times vs. OVC schools) Hill had drilled three or more 3-pointers in a game. He s hit at least one triple in nine of the last 1 games. He averages 10.3 points per game overall, but that number jumps to 11. against OVC opponents. PROFFITT MARGIN Ty Proffitt has quietly established himself as a talented combo guard in the Eagle offense. He averages 7.9 points per game. One of the Eagles best free throw shooters, he s hit 84.3 percent of his charity tosses. He s second on the team with 58 assists and has committed just 37 turnovers in 31 games this year. He hit a big 3-pointer to pull MSU within one during the Eagle rally against TSU and he scored a career-high 17 at Jacksonville State, swishing four triples. Already a locker room leader, Proffitt gave an inspiring halftime rallying cry at Ball State and since that point the Eagles have lost just once. DK COUNTRY Drew Kelly originally was on Miami s (Ohio) roster, but transferred to MSU last year. He completed his NCAA-mandated year of residency and became eligible prior to the first Tennessee State game. He scored three points and grabbed three rebounds in his college debut, but had his best game at Tennessee Tech, scoring 1 points and grabbing seven rebounds to lead the Eagles in both categories. In 1 of the last 13 games, he s had at least four rebounds per game. LA NIGHTS Junior transfer Lamont Austin has found his way after missing practice early (due to injury) and adjusting to a new team. Austin had a then career-high seven points in both games versus Tennessee Tech (a feat he repeated against SEMO). He set a new career high with 10 at Indiana State. The point guard also had a stretch of six straight games where he dished out at least two assists per game. He s also had four steals twice this season, including the first meeting with TTU. He had a career-high of five assists at Eastern Kentucky. RPI TURNAROUND Under Tyndall, Morehead State has had an impressive turnaround in the last four years, so good that it ranks at the top in Division I men s basketball. The Eagles RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) jumped a whopping 37 spots, from 31, which was where MSU was rated the year before Tyndall s arrival, to 84th last season. The next closest school with a big jump is Morgan State s rise of 6 spots. MSU ranks 91st in the RPI at this point in 010-11. TYNDALLTOWN Donnie Tyndall has had a successful first five seasons as the head coach at Morehead State. The Eagle alum picked up his 50th win at MSU last year versus St. Catharine. The 50 (now 93) wins came by the team improving each season under Tyndall, from 1 to 15 to 0 wins and 4 last season. His teams have been most impressive in home games, posting a 60-15 record at Johnson Arena, including a stretch of 10 straight wins from the 008-09 season into last year and a perfect OVC mark at home over those two years. The Eagles finished 15- at home last year and 9-0 at home in OVC games. This season, MSU finished 14-1 at home. BACK IN BLACK In the first meeting with Murray, Morehead State donned new black uniforms for the annual black-out game. The uniforms didn t appear again until two weeks ago at Eastern Kentucky. It was in Richmond, after a late rally sent the Eagles to an overtime win, that former standout guard and current graduate manager Maze Stallworth dubbed the unis The Batman Suit. Morehead State is now 4-1 in their superhero duds.
