2 Infographic Game Notes MATCHUP BREAKDOWN POINTS PER GAME POINTS ALLOWED REBOUNDS PER GAME ASSISTS PER GAME TURNOVERS PER GAME STEALS PER GAME Upstate was picked to finish 6th in the A-Sun preseason poll after losing four starters from a team that went last year and was one of three current league members to participate in the CIT (FGCU, NJIT). \ The Spartans opened the league schedule by beating NJIT on the road, 80-78, on a tip-in at the buzzer after holding a double-figure second-half lead. However, Upstate has claimed just one conference win since at Lipscomb, 92-91, in overtime. FGCU and USC Upstate rank 1st and 2nd, respectively, in rebound margin in the A-Sun at +4.4 and The Eagles lead the league with a rebound average of 40.9, while Upstate is 3rd at 38 per contest. Deion Holmes and Michael Buchanan are Upstate s only double-figure scorers at 12.5 per game and 10.7 per outing, respectively. Buchanan also adds a team-best 5.2 rebounds per game. \ With a record of at Upstate, Payne is second on the program s all-time wins list. Now is his 31st season overall, he has a career record of NON-LEAGUE BREAKDOWN Of FGCU s 16-game non-conference slate, 12 contests were against Division-I opponents, which finished with the following: 7 teams with a winning record 7 teams with a top-125 RPI 5 teams with a top-85 RPI 4 teams which made postseason appearances 4 teams which won at least 20 games BY THE NUMBERS 145 Over the past 2+ seasons under head coach Joe Dooley, the Green and Blue is 45-3 when leading at the half. 21 When scoring 80 or more points, FGCU is 21-3 when reaching that mark under Dooley. 1 Under Dooley, FGCU is 48-8 when securing more re- 48bounds than their opposition. SERIES HISTORY FGCU Leads, 13-5 A loss in the A-Sun Championship semifinals last year snapped a seven-game winning streak in the series by the Eagles. FGCU had just a 5-4 edge in the series prior to the seven-game winning streak, but has still won eight of the last nine. Five of the last eight meetings between the Eagles and Spartans have been decided by four points or less. In addition to leading the A-Sun in rebounding, FGCU also paces the league in points allowed (71.4), field goal percentage defense (.416) and 3-point percentage defense (.306). SEASON S 1ST MATCHUP Trailing 8-4 not even four minutes in, Dooley elected to call a timeout at the 16:07 mark rather than waiting for the media timeout. Out of that timeout, the Eagles responded with a 15-0 run and an extended 39-9 run the rest of the half to create a halftime lead and were never threatened the rest of the night as the Green and Blue won their sixth in a row, FGCU connected at a 61.9-percent clip from 3-point range, the second-highest single-game percentage in program history against a D-I opponent. The highest also came against Upstate (66.7 percent, 14-21) on Feb. 28, The Eagles passed out 22 assists the most versus a D-I opponent this year and committed a season-low four turnovers a total which was matched on Saturday night against UNF. STRENGTH OF SKED FGCU played a challenging non-conference schedule as all but two of FGCU s seven non-league losses came against top-150 RPI teams, including two losses to top-25 teams (#11 Texas A&M, 75-65; #21 Florida, 70-50) and three to top-50 teams (#43 South Dakota State, 56-52) and two of those three losses came by 10 points or less.
