Mission & Area Served Statements Mission Statement The Tallahassee Community College Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation, which seeks private supplemental funds to add distinction to educational programs and facilities at TCC. The Foundation is guided by a board of community leaders who provide stewardship over all funds raised by the Foundation. Its mission is to support the College by strengthening connections to the community, promoting excellence in teaching, and expanding student success in a global economy. 3
Background Statement In January 1981, Marm Harris, TCC s second president, convinced the Board of Trustees to establish the TCC Foundation and an institutional advancement position. Prominent community leaders were recruited to serve on the Board, and on February 23, 1981, the Directors met for the first time. In September of 1981, Jeff Schembera became the first Director of Institutional Advancement. In June 1983, the Board of Trustees appointed Dr. James H. Hinson, Jr. as the third president of Tallahassee Community College. Dr. Hinson was keenly aware of the need for community college foundations, and recognized their potential for success. In January 1984, Judge W.T. Moore, representing the trustees of the Gates Trust Fund, authorized the transfer of $101,634 to the Tallahassee Community College Foundation. The fund, established in the wills of Ruby and Irvin Gates, provided educational loans for residents of Leon County. President Hinson recommended that a full time administrative position be established in 1987, and the Board of Trustees agreed. A selection committee chose Stuart Abbey to be the new Coordinator of Institutional Advancement and the Administrator of the Foundation. In the fall of 1989, Robert Browning of Browning Properties Inc. approached President Hinson with an innovative proposal- to buy property adjacent to TCC and develop a 168-unit student-housing complex. The construction and management of Eagleview, later The Orchards, was the primary occupation of the Foundation for the next six years. When T. K. Wetherell assumed the Presidency of TCC in early 1995, he recognized the need to reinvigorate the Foundation, and shift its focus from The Orchards to raising private funds. He was also convinced that the Foundation needed a full time Director. In October 1995, the Foundation Board recommended, and President Wetherell appointed, Marjorie Turnbull as the full time Executive Director. The Board was enlarged and emphasis shifted to fundraising. In 1996, the Board approved a Five Year Strategic Plan to give policy direction to the Foundation based on campus needs. The plan focused on fund raising initiatives and creating endowments. The Strategic Plan set a goal of $2 million in assets by the year 2000. That goal was attained a year ahead of schedule. As the assets of the Foundation grew, the Board recognized the need to move from investing solely in certificates of deposit to developing a diversified investment policy. Under the leadership of the Finance and Investment Committee, the Board developed a sound investment policy and contracted with The Consultant Group Smith Barney to manage the growing portfolio. In fall of 2001, the Foundation, working with the Clements Group, an outside consultant, undertook a feasibility study for a major gifts campaign. The study concluded that there existed sufficient support in the community to justify a major gifts campaign with a goal between $9 million and $10 million. The Major Gifts Campaign exceeded expectations and concluded, earlier than predicted, by March 31, 2006. The Foundation was in a position of strength following the year in which it celebrated its 25 th Anniversary in 2006 and the College celebrated its 40 th Anniversary. The College is currently planning its 50 th Anniversary celebration. As of January 2015, the Foundation s assets are approximately $14 million. In February 2015, the Foundation welcomed its new Vice President for Resource Development and Foundation Executive Director, Heather R. Mitchell. The Foundation Board is composed of a committed group of citizen leaders, who are highly regarded and widely recognized throughout the community. TCC President Jim Murdaugh is strongly committed to the work of the Foundation, and devotes time and energy toward meeting goals. The District Board of Trustees is outwardly appreciative of the role the Foundation plays in helping to meet College needs. Through the combined leadership of the Foundation Board, the President, and the DBOT, the future of the Foundation is bright and the 4
