VMA 102 Two-Dimensional Design / Page 2 of 7 Course Description This course introduces the student to the elements and concepts of two-dimensional design. Familiarity with the terminology, concepts, basic materials utilized in the studio by visual and media department students will be required. These elements are: shape, value, texture, color, line and mass. Visual sensitivity and a working knowledge of the design elements are developed by solving a series of 2D problems using a variety of media and materials. There is an emphasis on writing and communication skills for the mastery of basic vocabulary, and the process of evaluation and critique. Prerequisites: Writing Skills II (ENG095) and Fundamentals of Math (MAT090). Course Objectives Upon completion of the course, the student will: Demonstrate an understanding of elements of two-dimensional design (these being shape, line, value, texture, color and mass) by using these elements in design projects. Demonstrate the ability to think critically about their work by orally presenting a final project series to the class using design terminology to reference unity, harmony, balance, visual rhythm, and economy in their designs. Develop and demonstrate the ability to use a variety of materials to create black and white, and color projects that meet project guidelines. Student Learning Outcomes Students will identify and apply basic principles of 2D design in their creation of both black and white and color design projects. They will practice problem solving techniques, think critically about their design solutions, and develop a vocabulary of terms specific to the visual arts and visual communications, thereby allowing them to speak and write effectively about design.

VMA 102 Two-Dimensional Design / Page 3 of 7 Grading Participation is defined as attendance and willingness to work in class. Participation counts for 10% of the course grade. There will be quizzes on the assigned reading. Projects (4) will be evaluated for the effective use of design elements and adherence to project guidelines. Each project is worth 15% of your course grade. Exercises are part of classroom participation and are recorded but not evaluated, however, an incomplete exercise counts as an absence from class. Text None required. Attendance Policy It is essential for students to attend class regularly. Absences for unavoidable reasons (illness, death of immediate family member, jury duty) may be excused at the instructor s discretion. It is the student s responsibility to ask for an absence to be excused. It is not possible to achieve a passing grade if you have four or more unexcused absences. Incomplete class exercises count as an absence. If you miss a class and are excused the absence, you will have to contact a class member and make up the work.
