Buenos Aires, August 13, 2014 Courses for International Students at the Undergraduate Level 1) Semester Courses in the Program in Argentine and Latin American Studies (PALAS) & Programa de Estudios Argentinos y Latinoamericanos (PEAL) The School of Languages and Foreign Studies offers two programs in Latin American Studies specially designed for foreign students: PEAL (taught in Spanish) and PALAS (taught in English), which also offer Spanish as a Second Language courses (SPAN). PEAL & PALAS offer introductory and upper division courses in art, cultural studies, economics, ethics, history, literature, political theory, gender studies and sociology, all of which focus specifically on Argentina and Latin America. Courses coded 150 or above are at second year undergraduate-level or higher (eg SPAN 150). Norwegian full-time students have to take five courses, which is the equivalent to 300 contact hours, equal to 30 credits in the European System (ECTS), depending on the student's home university. Meant for undergraduate students, courses meet twice per week for 90 minutes each class and take a total of 60 hours to complete, with the exception of Tango Dance and Oral Production (Intermediate & Advanced), which meet once a week for 90 minutes and take a total of 30 hours to complete. The semester lasts 15 weeks in a row, with no breaks, and is available twice a year (July 28 to November 6, 2014 and March 9 to July 18, 2015). PEAL 490 Asesoramiento de tesinas (con pago adicional) 1 8 2) Boreal Summer Courses As from 2015, PEAL will offer a boreal summer / austral winter program consisting of two courses in Spanish at intermediate and advanced levels, and four upper division survey courses in Latin American Studies at the 300 level. These courses are suitable for majors and minors in Spanish and all students participating in this program must take two courses. Courses meet four times per week for 150 minutes each class, and take a total of 60 hours to complete. All students must take a written placement test online which will determine if they are eligible for this program. A minimum of 20 students is required to open the program. Classes meet five times a week for 3 or 5 hours and take a 100 hours to complete. Intensive courses are also meant to better prepare students for our PEAL semester courses Continuing students may also take a further course in Spanish language during the semester. Students will be allocated to different levels on the basis of a written placement test that will take priority over past courses. Course capacity is limited to 15 students. 3
