4 Secondary Education Program Admission requirements: To declare a minor in secondary education the candidate must complete a Declaration of Minor declaration card through the Academic Achievement Center or SEPP Office in ATC 214. The advisor for the secondary education minor will be assigned by the program s department chairperson. The teacher candidate also has a content/discipline advisor. MAINTAIN 2.8 Cumulative GPA

5 Once you have declared the secondary education minor, you will need to follow these steps to be admitted into the Professional Program: Complete EDHM 210 and 235 (Minimum 10 hours each field observation; minimum 20 hours total if taken in same semester) Complete the MTEL Communication and Literacy Test (Request scores be sent to BSU) Complete the Professional Program packet and submit it to the CEAS office (Hart 124) MAINTAIN 2.8 Cumulative GPA Once admitted into the Professional Program you need to do the following to complete the minor: Schedule and PASS the MTEL content exam BEFORE the semester you plan on student teaching. (Passing score is one requirement in order to be eligible to student teach. Request scores be sent to BSU)

6 Take the following courses (students cannot take more than two secondary education courses* in a semester) EDHM 335 (prerequisites: EDHM 210, 235 & Professional Ed admit) EDHM 336 (prerequisite: EDHM 210, 235 & Professional Ed admit) The secondary SEI course is the only one accepted for secondary or arts/dance/theater/music teachers. EDHM 445 (prerequisites: EDHM 210, 235 & Professional Ed admit)

7 Appropriate Strategies course (prerequisites: EDHM 210, 235, Professional Ed admit, and EDHM335): EDHM 424 Foreign Language - Spanish (Fall only) EDHM 413 Music (Spring only) EDHM 425 Visual Art (Spring only) HSED 412/MSED 450 History (Fall and Spring) HSED 414/MSED 451 English (Fall and Spring) HSED 422/MSED 456 Math (Fall and Spring) HSED 465/MSED 465 Integrated Science (Fall and Spring) Dance, Theater Arts and Health Ed majors must consult with their department chairperson regarding the Strategies course

8 APPLY for EDHM 490/495 Student Teaching high school or middle school. Must meet all practicum criteria, (deadline to apply for Spring practicum is the end of September and the first of February for Fall practicum) ALL COURSES, INCLUDING CONTENT COURSES, MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE STUDENT TEACHING. You may not take any courses while student teaching. Additional requirements: PSYC 227 Developmental Psychology (prerequisite PSYC 100) * Some courses have the EDHM prefix, others (like the strategies courses) might have HSED/MSED.

9 EDHM Introduction to Teaching* EDHM Learning and Motivation* EDHM Assessment and Planning* EDHM Foundations in Sheltered English Immersion: The Education and Assessment of Diverse Populations* EDHM Content Area Reading, Writing and Study Skills Take the appropriate Content Strategies course*: Visual art, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Dance, English, Music, History, Physics, Theater, or Spanish * Each of these courses has a minimum of hours of field observations in the schools.
