1 University of Illinois at Chicago Transfer Requirements Guide The Transfer Requirements Guide lists the courses at Harold Washington College that meet the general education requirements of the UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). Consult the UIC catalog for additional graduation requirements. Students who plan to complete the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) before transferring to UIC should choose courses in consultation with their community college advisor. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences The educational programs of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) embody the modern traditions of culture and learning, offering students an opportunity to study a number of disciplines. At UIC, liberal arts students complete a basic core of general education courses in addition to a major field. Through this balance between specialization in a major and study in other areas, students develop an understanding of that more complex world outside their immediate experience, as well as prepare for continuing education throughout life. Whatever an individual's career plans, a liberal arts education is a foundation that enhances the quality of life. Transfer Admission Requirements LAS applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (A=4.0) on at least 24 semester hours of transferable baccalaureate-oriented course work prior to application, and 36 semester hours by the time of enrollment. Minimum Transfer Requirements completed or in progress at time of application: (a) two courses in English Composition (6 credit hours); (b) college credit in mathematics, logic, or statistics (3 semester hours); (c) two courses in natural sciences, including one laboratory course (7 semester hours). Completion of the IAI General Education Core Curriculum satisfies the minimum transfer requirements (see The application deadline for the Fall Semester is March 1; contact the UIC Office of Admissions and Records for deadlines for the Spring term. Early applications are strongly recommended. For applications and additional transfer information, contact the Transfer Center on your campus or the UIC Office of Admissions and Records (312) Transfer guides are available at Course Selection Guidelines This guide is intended to assist students in completing the LAS general education requirements. Most course work in the major is completed after transferring to UIC. Continuing UIC students must consult a UIC college adviser for approval before enrolling in any courses listed in this guide. 1. For the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences requirements, course work from one department can satisfy the requirement in only one of the three areas. When a department offers courses listed in two of these categories, work from that department can satisfy the requirement in only one. For example, a student who applies a U.S. History course toward the social sciences requirement cannot apply a European History course toward the humanities requirement. 2. Courses listed or cross-listed under the name of a student's major cannot apply toward a humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences requirement. For example, a psychology major cannot apply psychology courses toward the social sciences requirement. 3. After attaining junior standing, students must complete at least 60 semester hours at UIC or any other accredited four-year institution. Thus, students should not enroll at a community college after the sophomore year. 4. Placement tests in chemistry, English, foreign language, and mathematics may be required of transfer students, depending on the individual's prior course work and major. 5. General education requirements are subject to change. New students must meet UIC graduation requirements in effect at the time of admission to UIC. The course recommendations on this guide are only valid for students who enroll in LAS through the Spring
