Sport Management SPM professors named Falk College faculty of the year Two faculty members from the Department of Sport Management were honored for excellence in teaching and research with 2014 Falk College Faculty of the Year Awards. The honorees, who are nominated by their peers for outstanding performance and contributions to students, the Falk College, Syracuse University and beyond, were recognized during the Falk College s Convocation for the Class of 2014 on May 10. Professor Rodney Paul was honored by Falk College for Excellence in Research; and professor of practice Dennis Deninger was honored for Excellence in Teaching. DR. RODNEY PAUL, Excellence in Research Dr. Paul received the 2014 Award for Extraordinary Accomplishments in Research by the Academy of Economics and Finance, the organization that selected him as the Research Fellow in Economics in 2013. It was the first time the honor had been awarded since 2010. In January 2014, he reached the top 10 percent of Economists (by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis) in terms of number of distinct academic articles published and in the number of journal pages published. As a sports economist, he brings a strong financial and analytical business background into the classroom, which is immeasurable in Sport Management. In the past year, his research has focused on attendance variables and predictability among different minor league baseball leagues; Department of Sport Management Summer 2014 Rodney Paul honored for research betting and wagering in college football; ticket pricing variables affecting Major League Baseball; fan satisfaction levels in the National Football League; and attendance predictability in minor league professional hockey, among other contemporary topics. It s an honor to be awarded the Falk College Excellence in Research Award and to be a part of the Department of Sport Management, said Paul, who teaches SPM 300 Data Analytics, SPM 315 Sport Finance and SPM 664 Financial Management of Sport Facilities and Events. I thoroughly enjoy teaching our students and assisting them with award-winning research projects. Paul also serves as the faculty sponsor for honors theses, independent studies, research projects and sport practicums, and advises the SPM Baseball Statistics and Sabermetrics Club. What makes Dr. Paul so exceptional is his extensive knowledge of Dennis Deninger honored for teaching sports and statistics and his ability to relate it to his students, said Sabermetrics Club president Matt Filippi. He is one of the smartest people I ve had the pleasure of working with, and in addition, he is very approachable and always open to new ideas and perspectives from his students. It is professors like him that make this program so great. I can think of no one more deserving of this award. Paul has taught at Syracuse University for three years. He also taught at St. Bonaventure University and Montana State University. He holds a B.S. in mathematics and a B.A. in economics from Lebanon Valley College; and a M.A. and Ph.D. in applied economics from Clemson University. Paul s research and articles have been featured in Journal of Economic Psychology, Journal of Sports Economics, Sport Marketing Quarterly, International Journal of Sport Finance, Academy of Economics and Finance Journal, Reading Eagle, New York continued on page 2

continued from page 1 Economic Review, Los Angeles Times, NBC Sports, The New York Times, and Journal of Prediction Markets, among others. Sport Management director and chair Michael Veley said, Professor Paul has proven himself on a number of pedagogical levels that bring great credibility, recognition and respect to Sport Management, Falk College and Syracuse University. Rodney is an incredibly ambitious academic author; has involved students in diverse research projects and writing academic papers for publishing; presented research at numerous academic conferences throughout the world; and incorporates real-world research projects into his classroom teaching. Veley added, Since his appointment at Syracuse, Dr. Rodney Paul has established high standards in terms of the quantity, quality and breadth of academic publications produced. He is a voracious writer of academic manuscripts and is recognized internationally for his research and scholarly focus in the areas of analytics, gambling, attendance predictability factors and other financial and analytical-based aspects that are applicable to the sport industry. During the 2013-14 academic year, Paul attended sport industry conferences in Denmark (European Sport Economic Conference), Spain (IX Gijon Conference on Sports Economics), and Chattanooga, TN (Academy of Economics and Finance Conference). He will attend the European Sport Economics Association (ESEA) conference in Belgium in September. His research focuses on two main areas. He uses sports betting market data to test the efficient markets theory, and he develops models for attendance and TV ratings. His classes focus on sport finance and research methodology. Modeling of attendance and TV ratings is important for both revenue and understanding how leagues and teams schedule games, he says. And his influence is felt on a new generation of sport managers. One of his students recently had the findings of an independent study project published in the Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics. DENNIS DENINGER, Excellence in Teaching Deninger is described as having a genuine passion for teaching and mentoring students. His courses draw from 25-plus years as a production executive and innovator at ESPN. Deninger, a threetime Emmy Award winner, recently wrote and produced his second documentary, Changing Sports, Changing Lives, which premiered at Syracuse University in April 2014 and focused on sports that have been adapted for people with disabilities. The 2013 documentary about the origins, culture, and rapid growth of lacrosse was entitled America s First Sport, and has aired nationwide on ESPNU. Veley said, Professor Deninger s teaching style and level of student engagement is contagious in the classroom and often leads to brisk dialog, critical thinking and deeper understanding of the subject matter. Dennis courses are characterized by thought-provoking lectures. His professional connections with industry practitioners add a wow factor into his lectures and courses and he has an infectious personality that is engaging and holds the students attention. In addition to service in the Falk College Department of Sport Management and Syracuse University, he has served as a national judge for the annual College Sports Media Awards. He also completed teaching and administrative responsibilities in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, where he was the founding director of the Sports Communications graduate program. I want to thank Michael Veley, Dean Diane Lyden Murphy, and especially all my students for their generous support in selecting me for the Excellence in Teaching award, said Deninger, who teaches SPM 199 Super Bowl and Society, SPM 325 Sport Communications, and SPM 346 Sport in American Society. I am honored to work with so many outstanding people who make what I do in the classroom possible. Deninger has written and published a book, Sports on Television: The How and Why Behind What You See. He joined ESPN in October 1982 as one of the first four coordinating producers for SportsCenter and held that position until 1986. A 1973 graduate of Syracuse University, Deninger started teaching at his alma mater in the year 2000 as an adjunct professor. Professor Deninger is by far one of my favorite professors at SU, said student Jesus Ortiz, who worked with Deninger on the film and took his History of Sport and Super Bowl and Society classes. His tremendous knowledge and passion for sports, along with a great attitude, make his lectures an absolute joy to be a part of. Professor Deninger will go above and beyond to ensure that his students succeed. Deninger is known for his extensive sports media knowledge and is often called upon by newspaper and television reporters to offer his expertise and insight on a particular topic. During the 2013-14 academic year, he was quoted by several local and national media outlets, including US News and World Report, Wall Street Journal Market Watch, the Sacramento Bee, CNY Central in Syracuse, the Charlotte (NC) Observer, PBS in Connecticut and Massachusetts, among others. In the summer of 2014 he visited Beijing, where he was invited to make a presentation for China Central Television and lecture at Beijing Sports University. SPMNews 2 Summer 2014

DIRECTOR S GREETING As we prepare to usher in another academic year which will be our 10 th in Sport Management I extend best wishes to each of you on behalf of our faculty, staff and students. Recently I was reflecting on the growth and development of our program, and thought I d share this experience. The very first assignment in their initial Sport Management class that I teach requires each student to conduct a personal interview with an industry executive or practitioner with at least 10 years of managerial experience. This is an exercise of getting the students out of their comfort zone ; learning how to network; building their personal brand; and navigating the system of connecting with sports executives. One of our enterprising students actually tried to get an interview with Art Michael Veley Rooney, the iconic owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mr. Rooney s administrative assistant called the student to follow up on the interview request and asked, Who are you with? The student, somewhat shocked that the owner of the Steelers was actually contacting him for this assignment said, Nobody, I m by myself in the library! And so, the academic journey begins! We continually reinforce with our students that the world of sports is uber competitive. Engagement outside of the classroom is not only expected, but it is now an absolute necessity if students wish to succeed. Getting a job is a lot like sports. It s about skill, timing, and positioning. Rejection and disappointment are never easy for anyone, but students need to accept that failure is part of the overall learning process. Learn from the disappointment. But remember, no is only a temporary pause in life until YES! Sports remain a great metaphor for life s more difficult lessons. It was through athletics that many of us first came to understand that fear can be tamed; that on a team, the whole is more than the sum of the parts; and that the ability to be a hero, surprisingly, lies within. It s been said that only 10 percent of your life is what you experience; the remaining 90 percent is how you react to it. Some of you will succeed because you are destined to, but for the majority, you must prepare yourself to succeed because you are determined to. As you plan for this challenging mission, remember the words of the greatest college coach and humanitarian ever John Wooden who said, Today is the most important day of your life. Yesterday is gone, and tomorrow is dependent on today s preparation. If you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail. Develop passion and demonstrate perseverance and you will likely reach your goals. I extend my heartiest congratulations to the Class of 2014, which established many noteworthy milestones. Twenty-one students in this year s class graduated with honors achieving a 3.4 and above GPA. Nearly one out of four students graduated magna or summa cum laude. A record 11 students earned the distinction of being named to the Academic Achievement Honor Roll by attaining a minimum 3.4 GPA for each of the seven consecutive semesters at SU, which is an outstanding accomplishment. Our second class of graduate students are all on track to receive their M.S. in Sport Venue and Event Management, and we wish them much success. The momentum continues. Our applications and enrollment have reached an all-time high, and we will welcome the largest first-year group of students in our 10-year history when the Class of 2018 arrives in August. Additionally, the number of Intra University Transfer applications has reached unprecedented levels. We have successfully completed 59 Senior Capstones with professional teams, leagues, sport marketing and communications agencies and other sport organizations that are documented in this issue. Students completed their 12-credit Senior Capstone not only in the U.S., but also the United Kingdom and Germany. Our SPM faculty have been quoted or interviewed in more than 25 print or broadcast media outlets including Sports Business Journal, National Public Radio, SportsBusiness International, The New York Times, Associated Press, Bloomberg, Sports Business Daily, ESPN s Outside the Lines, Wall Street Journal and ESPN Radio. We ve been fully engaged in the social responsibility and social justice aspects of sports throughout the year as you ll read in this issue. Final proceeds of the Sport Management Club s 9th Annual Charity Sports Auction netted $30,500 for the Food Bank of Central New York and the club received the 44 Stars of Distinction award for its community service involvement throughout the year, presented to individual students and student organizations by Bloomingdale s and Macy s. Two of our students, Lauren Strand and Fergus Barrie, were selected as 2014-15 Remembrance Scholars, one of the most prestigious honors given to SU students to honor the 35 SU students returning from a semester studying abroad who were killed in a Libyan terrorist attack over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. Our undergraduate alumni base continues to grow with nearly 350 students. We re very proud of their accomplishments and wish them continued success. Please keep us updated on both your personal and professional accomplishments. The challenges facing higher education and the sports profession are numerous. Engagement in the global enterprise of sports is essential to meet the competitive structure of this industry and prepare students for a professional career. We pledge to continue to meet these needs and demands with your help and support, and I invite you to become engaged however you can. Best wishes for a productive year ahead. Sincerely, Michael Veley Director and Chair Rhonda S. Falk Endowed Professor Department of Sport Management SPMNews 3 Summer 2014

NEWS AND EVENTS Moving to Campus Within the next year, Falk College will be moving to its new on-campus location! This will be the first time SPM has been housed on the campus and it couldn t be in a better place located adjacent to the Carrier Dome. The move will be phased-in over several months as departments relocate to the existing White and MacNaughton Halls. Renovation and construction planning for the new Falk Complex is well under way. The existing Law School will soon be moving to newly constructed Dineen Hall, located across the street from the Carrier Dome on Irving Avenue. Project Architect, Ashley McGraw, along with design partner, Gilbert Displays, are developing plans for teaching environments, technology advancements, meeting spaces and other needs that are specific for each academic and administrative department. Specifically for Sport Management, a new state-of-the art Sales Call Center and Technology Training classroom will be constructed. These new learning environments will help us maximize the instruction, training and overall student experience. The classroom will feature training modules for digital components associated with game-day entertainment experiences such as videoboards, and LED ribbon boards. We ll keep the specifics under wraps until you return to campus for our 10 th anniversary celebration in Fall 2015. Seeing is believing! NEWS AND EVENTS SPM professor Rick Burton named faculty representative to NCAA On July 1, 2014, David B. Falk Endowed Professor of Sport Management Rick Burton was named Syracuse University s Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA. Burton replaced Michael Wasylenko, the senior associate dean for academics and administration and a professor of economics in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, who held the position since 2002. Burton was appointed to the role by Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud. The Faculty Athletics Representative reports to the Chancellor and is an institutional liaison to Syracuse Athletics and also a representative of the University in conference and NCAA matters, Syverud said in a news release announcing Burton s appointment. Key issues this position has focused on in the past include overall student-athlete welfare, compliance with new and ongoing NCAA legislation, and generally advocating for the best interests of the University and its constituencies. Rick has considerable experience in athletics and sportsrelated management. Prior to his appointment at Syracuse in 2009, he served as commissioner of the Australia-based National Basketball League, and as the chief marketing officer for the U.S. Olympic Committee at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, continued Syverud. I have spent significant time with Rick and can assure you his values regarding faculty governance match mine. I am confident that he will serve the faculty and University very well in this important role. Burton said he s honored to be chosen to represent the University to the NCAA. It s a great honor to serve the Chancellor and the University in this capacity, Burton said. And I m thrilled to be able to represent the Falk College and Sport Management in this role. Burton has taught at Syracuse University for five years. During the last 20 years, his scholarly research and commentary has been published in Sport Marketing Quarterly, the International Journal of Sports Marketing and Sponsorship, The Journal of Sport, SAIS Review, Marketing Management, Journal of Brand Strategy, Journal of Marketing Communications, Industrial Marketing Management, International Marketing Review, Football Studies, Sports Business Journal, and The Journal of Sponsorship, among others. He s often quoted by local and national media outlets on a variety of topics in the sporting industry. SPMNews 4 Summer 2014

GRADUATE STUDENTS Sport Venue and Event Management master s program graduates its second cohort The Department of Sport Management s master s program in Sport Venue and Event Management (SVEM) welcomed its second cohort of graduate students to campus in July 2013. The program, which is interdisciplinary in nature, is offered in conjunction with SU s School of Information Studies (ischool), S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. It comprises 36 credit hours of intensive classroom learning, skill development and experiential opportunities in settings like SU s Carrier Dome. The 2013-14 group included 13 students, a diverse mix of educational backgrounds and geographic locations, with more than one-third of the group as international students. SVEM students took a full load of coursework in the Summer and Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters, while also gaining valuable work experience during the school year at locations throughout Central New York such as SU Athletics, the Carrier Dome, the Syracuse Crunch, and Onondaga Community College s SRC Center. They will complete their practicum work in the Summer and Fall 2014 semesters with organizations such Harvard University Athletics, Disney Sports, and the Grammy Awards. The SVEM class began in a very immersive nature, with the students working three days at the Musselman Triathlon in the Finger Lakes region during the first week of the program. The program s first month also included a trip to Watkins Glen during NASCAR race weekend and a speed networking event, where students met with more than a dozen area industry executives to expand networks and identify experiential opportunities with venues, events, and sports organizations. Other highlights of the 2013-14 year included trips to Philadelphia and New York City, where master s students toured facilities such as Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park, the Wells Fargo Center, and the Barclays Center. The SVEM curriculum has been refined for the 2014-15 year, with new courses in the areas of marketing, strategic management, and an advanced event management course in which students will utilize material learned throughout all of their coursework in the planning and execution of an event from start-to-finish during the Spring 2015 semester. Our young master s program continues to develop and become stronger, said Dr. Chad McEvoy, sport management professor and graduate program director. Our first two cohorts have immersed themselves in the program s academic and experiential opportunities, and leveraged the program s relationships to launch their careers in industry. Our curricular improvements and strong incoming cohort point toward an exciting future for the continued development of the Sport Venue and Event Management master s program. The third SVEM graduate class began July 7, 2014. Eight members of the Sport Venue and Event Management Class of 2014 took part in Falk College Convocation on May 10, 2014. STUDENTS Two SPM students honored as Remembrance Scholars Fergus Barrie 15 Lauren Strand 15 Syracuse University s Remembrance Scholar Committee has announced that two Sport Management students, Fergus Barrie 15 and Lauren Strand 15, are among the 35 students named as 2014-15 Remembrance Scholars. The scholarships were founded as a tribute to and means of remembering the 35 students who were killed in the Dec. 21, 1988, bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. The students, who were returning from a semester of study in London and Florence, were among 270 people who perished in the bombing. Last December marked the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. I am extremely honored to have been chosen as a Remembrance Scholar, said Barrie, who grew up in the village of Lockerbie. The Pan Am 103 air disaster is something that is extremely close to my heart and is ultimately the reason that brought me to study at Syracuse University. Strand, of Branchburg, N.J., who also majors in marketing management in the Whitman School of Management, said, I can t put into words how honored I am to have been chosen as a Remembrance Scholar. I hope I can have a positive impact on the families of the victims, and that I can help expand the program by spreading awareness around campus about the memorial events. Barrie and Strand will participate in several activities on campus within the next year, culminating with Remembrance Week in Fall 2014. Previous SPM Remembrance Scholars include Sam Staton 10; Eileen Finn 10; Ashley Robbins 11; and Sarah Costello 13. The scholarships are funded through an endowment supported by gifts from alumni, friends, parents, and corporations. Remembrance Scholars are chosen in their junior year through a rigorous, competitive process. Applicants write three essays as part of a comprehensive application, and finalists are interviewed by members of the selection committee, composed of University faculty, staff and students. The $5,000 scholarships are awarded on the basis of distinguished academic achievement, citizenship and service to the community. The scholars will be recognized during a convocation in Hendricks Chapel on October 24. Remembering SPM student Matt Brodsky In December 2013, the Department of Sport Management mourned the loss of freshman Matt Brodsky, 19, who died unexpectedly of an illness while at his Pennsylvania home over the holiday break. A memorial service was held on campus in February joining Matt s family and friends together to celebrate his life and his short time at Syracuse University. Matt was an active member of the SPM Club, and in his memory the Club purchased a paver in the Orange Grove that will forever commemorate Matt s life and his time at SU. Sport Management will honor Matt s memory through the establishment of the Matt Brodsky Philanthropic Excellence Award given annually to two graduating SPM seniors. Matt was actively engaged in our program, said Michael Veley, director and chair of Sport Management. He was a dedicated and successful student academically. He loved sports and he loved life, but he also understood the value of giving back. Matt performed a great deal of community service that was the primary way he got to know a lot of his fellow classmates. The paver purchased by the Sport Management Club in Matt s honor is displayed in the Orange Grove on campus. Matt Brodsky at the Sport Management Club Charity Auction in the Carrier Dome on December 7, 2013. By keeping alive the spirit and memories of talented students who lost their lives well before their time, we create a legacy and strengthen the bonds of the SU community, Veley commented. It is with this kindred spirit that our faculty, staff and students will keep Matt s spirit alive through the establishment of the Matt Brodsky Philanthropic Award that will be presented to a deserving male and female senior graduate every year. This award recognizes: Outstanding service to the campus community, greater Syracuse community and society at large; Exemplary citizenship and individuals who serve as a role model for underclassmen; Excellence in establishing outreach opportunities for students within the Department as well as campus-wide; Quintessential representatives for Sport Management and SU. The inaugural recipients of the award were 2014 graduates Kylee Haggerty and Andrew Sagarin. SPMNews 7 Summer 2014

STUDENTS Senior Capstone Experience Among the most valuable facets of the Department of Sport Management is its connection with the sport industry, which impacts students in numerous ways, including the Senior Capstone Experience. As a part of their degree requirements, Sport Management students must complete a 12-credit Capstone providing an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in the sports industry before graduation. Since the Capstone is the culmination of one s academic experience, the planning process begins during a student s freshman year. The process concludes with the full-semester experience with a specific sport entity typically in a location outside of Syracuse. The Capstone Experience requires the student to work with a sport-related organization for a minimum of 540 hours over the course of one semester, gaining experience in areas such as sales, marketing, finance, event management, administration, communication, law. The student gains valuable hands-on experience in a variety of areas under the supervision of qualified sport industry practitioners and executives. Listed below are Sport Management students and the organizations where they completed their Senior Capstone Experience in 2013-2014. STUDENTS SPM senior Steve Kozar puts social media, management skills to work at Super Bowl XLVIII By Kathleen Haley SU News During the Fall 2013 semester, sport management major/marketing studies minor Steve Kozar completed his 12-credit Sport Management Senior Capstone working for the NY/NJ Host Super Bowl Committee Marketing Department for Super Bowl XLVIII, which was held Feb. 2, 2014, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. He was selected for the internship with the Super Bowl Host Committee Executive Department earlier in the summer. From project management of multiple fan experiences in the Join the Huddle Tour, to numerous detail-oriented logistics for Super Bowl Boulevard, including contests and sweepstakes, Kozar put his classroom skills and leadership experience as a member of the Sport Management Club to work. Through his hands-on work in multiple facets of the organization s operations, including ticketing, marketing, community relations and educational outreach. He was asked to remain with the organization through Super Bowl XLVIII. His assignments during Super Bowl Week included being a team captain at the Social Media Communication Center, which focused on listening to questions, comments and concerns regarding the Super Bowl. In this role, he responded to the fans tweets regarding the Super Bowl. He worked on Super Bowl Boulevard between 35th and 36th Streets, where the Join the Huddle Tour presented by P.C. Richard & Son was located. He was in charge of creating five different stage activities to provide family fun to fans, and managed the ceremony that took place on Super Bowl Boulevard. The true purpose of the Join the Huddle Tour is to give fans a taste of the Super Bowl even if they are not going to MetLife Stadium Feb. 2, notes Kozar. Thanks to Kozar s teamwork and leadership, the mobile tour made stops at military bases, Boys & Girls Clubs, Special Olympics New Jersey, family festivals and high school football games. While at SU, Kozar was active on campus, holding leadership positions in the SPM Club that, since its inception nine years ago, has raised more than $222,000 to benefit local charities. During the year that he was the chair of the Charity Sports Auction, the total raised for Special Olympics New York was $35,239. After seeing Steven shine in this environment, it reaffirmed for me his passion for engaging himself in the world, said associate professor of Sport Management Gina Pauline, who also serves as undergraduate director for the SPM program. I could not be any prouder of what Steven has accomplished. Kozar stands with the Vince Lombardi trophy. STUDENTS SPM senior immerses himself in Red Sox spring training By Jack Wentzell SPM 2014 I completed my Capstone with the Boston Red Sox in the team s Florida Business Operations department as a ballpark operations intern. I worked at JetBlue Park, the spring training home and year-round training facility for the Red Sox and their minor league affiliates. As someone who grew up in the New England area, within 35 miles of Boston, working for this organization was a dream come true. It was truly special to receive paychecks from a world-renowned sports franchise like the Boston Red Sox. My direct responsibilities throughout the spring were to assist in the execution of successful events at JetBlue Park. Mainly, this consisted of being onsite at spring training workouts and games at the stadium. However, numerous other events were sandwiched in and around the baseball schedule. I played a significant role in ensuring the facility s cleanliness and overall presentation were top-notch for all events. I also learned to live on my own in an unfamiliar location. My favorite responsibility was operating the Green Monster manual scoreboard in left field. Just like Fenway Park in Boston, JetBlue Park features a large green Capstone leads to full-time job for Mari Lee 14 By Mari Lee SPM 2014 During the 2014 spring semester, I completed my Senior Capstone Experience at Zuffa, LLC, the parent company that owns and operates the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in Las Vegas, Nevada. I interned in the Event Development Department, which is responsible for planning, marketing, and implementing the schedule of events. Within the department, I worked on co-creating and launching various grassroots programs, and managing and growing UFC Fight Club, the official fan club of the UFC. I also helped plan and execute a successful VIP Experience at UFC events. In addition to these larger projects, I researched potential markets for future events. I worked closely with various professional fighters such as UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis, UFC Welterweight Champion Johny Hendricks, and UFC Bantamweight Champion TJ Dillashaw. I also worked with future UFC stars Michael Chiesa, Luke Rockhold, and Jake Ellenberger. Working with these professional athletes helped me develop a passion for mixed martial arts (MMA) because I was wall in left field, complete with a manual scoreboard, which had previously adorned Fenway s Monster. During spring training, I d fill the board with runs, hits, and errors while simultaneously updating the out-oftown scores. My access to the team was another priceless aspect of the position. I acquainted myself with players, coaches, and highlevel executives within the organization. I ll never forget introducing myself to Hall of Famer Jim Rice or exchanging head nods with 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz. Special moments such as these were commonplace during the seven weeks of spring training, and it was an opportunity I ll always cherish. I took great joy in the chance to live out a childhood fantasy of working for the Red Sox. I parlayed this experience into a job with the Red Sox Team Store on Yawkey Way in Boston. This has proven to be a great way to remain close to the organization as I look for a full-time salaried position in facility operations or event management. able to see how down-to-earth they all are. They stand out from other professional athletes and are incredibly easy to work with not to mention their incredible athleticism. While it was difficult to be away from campus and all of my friends back in Syracuse, I learned more than I ever could have imagined during my Capstone. I learned about the sport industry as well as myself. I was able to take on the same responsibilities as full-time employees, which made this experience so different from any other internship I ve had. Because of this amazing opportunity I had with the UFC, I realized that my dream career would be with the UFC. I put in the hard work and dedication and was ultimately offered a full-time position as the event development coordinator for the UFC. SPMNews 11 Summer 2014

STUDENTS Four SPM students attend Michigan Sport Business Conference By Scott Kevy SPM 15 In October 2013, fellow Sport Management students Dan Gorman 15, Marcus White 16, Nick Neu 15, and I attended the Michigan Sport Business Conference (MSBC) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Throughout the weekend, we networked with executives from the sports business industry, as well as sport management students from the University of Michigan and other universities. We met Seth Ader, senior director of marketing at ESPN, and heard numerous speakers, including ESPN president John Skipper, University of Michigan director of intercollegiate athletics David Brandon, as well as Tom Lewand, of the Detroit Lions, Leo Komoroski, of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Tom Garfinkel, of the Miami Dolphins, and Dennis Mannion, of the Detroit Pistons. It was an incredible opportunity for us to learn about the excitement and changes ahead in the NBA and the NFL directly from the executives. After the conference, we were invited to join the MSBC executive board for dinner, where we talked with Stephen Master, of The Nielsen Company, Gary Zenkel, of NBC Olympics, Marc Reeves, of the NFL, Terry Lefton, of SportsBusiness Journal, Matthew Kauffman, of Visa, and Dan Griffis, of Target, among others, who were staying in town for the Indiana-Michigan football game the next day. Being able to attend the Michigan Sport Business Conference allowed us to expand our horizons beyond the classroom and hear and learn from the leaders of our ESPN s Mike Tirico (center) was a guest speaker at the Michigan Sport Business Conference, which was attended by SU Sport Management students (from left) Marcus White, Dan Gorman, Nick Neu, and Scott Kevy. industry. Having the opportunity to travel from Syracuse to Ann Arbor to immerse ourselves in the sport business industry and network with numerous executives was truly an incredible occasion. It will have a large impact as we continue into professional careers in the sport business industry. SPM partners with Yankees to teach ticket sales tactics Sport Management Class of 2013 graduate P.J. Davidson works in the sales department for the Yankees. He is shown working a game on the concourse at Yankee Stadium. Sales is an essential function of the sports industry. Many students find that sales, and specifically ticket sales, is their best path to a career in professional sports. To this end, the Department of Sport Management established a partnership in 2012 with the New York Yankees toward the training and employment of SPM students in ticket sales. SPM instructor Pat Ryan teaches students essential sales skills and develops their understanding of the importance of sales to sport organizations. As part of the Yankees partnership, SPM created a second sales class, focused specifically on ticket sales. The class, taught by Dr. Chad McEvoy, involves significant collaboration with the Yankees and their senior sales executives, making it unique in sport management programs across the country, The Yankees involvement included helping with the design of the ticket sales class, participating in periodic video conferencing sessions with the students, visiting the SU campus annually to lecture in class and interview SU students, coordinating sales role-play exercises with Yankees sales staff, and hosting the class at Yankee Stadium every year in April. Aligning our program with the Yankees, as one of sports iconic brands, is a tremendous opportunity for our sport management program and our students specifically, McEvoy said. This partnership provides students with the chance to learn vital industry skills and potentially interview for jobs with the Yankees. The Yankees sales executives, such as Kevin Dart, Dan Rosenthal, and Joseph Leva, are some of the leading sales experts in the industry and are tremendous partners for our program and students. In addition to sales training, employment possibilities are a key aspect to the partnership between SPM and the Yankees. During each year of the partnership, the Yankees have interviewed more than a dozen SPM students for full-time positions on their inside sales staff, resulting in several hires. The Yankees have hired more inside salespeople from SU than any other school over the past two years, and SPM graduates such as P.J. Davidson 13 and Samuel Hochberg 12 have been among the Yankees most successful sales staff, resulting in their promotions within the Yankees organization. In the sales center, the New York Yankees have replicas of their outfield monuments to commemorate inside sales members who ve been promoted. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS SPM Sabermetrics Club research featured at MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference Club also places second at NYU SABR Diamond Dollars case competition The Baseball Statistics and Sabermetrics Club, which studies advanced baseball statistics, concluded its second year with two national honors. Dr. Rodney Paul, professor of sport management, and SPM students Matt Filippi, Greg Ackerman, and Zack Albright co-authored a research paper that was presented at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference Feb. 28 to March 1 in Boston. Their research paper, The Effects of Atmospheric Conditions on Pitchers, studied the impact of air density on pitch selection and pitcher performance. It was one of 16 papers selected (eight for presentation and eight for posters) from more than 300 submissions worldwide. Filippi, president of the Sabermetrics Club, represented the group at the conference. Student members of the Sabermetrics Club who were involved in the project s data collection process included Andrew Sagarin, Justin Mattingly, Marcus Shelmidine, James DiDonato, Colby Conetta, Curt Baylor, Greg Terruso, Jeremy Losak, Zack Potter, Matt Russo, Matt Romansky, Sam Friedman, and Justin Moritz. The research paper originated from a detailed data set on baseball from an earlier study Professor Paul had collaborated on with co-authors Andrew Weinbach (Coastal Carolina University) and Jeff Gurney (University of South Carolina). The student researchers used that data as a starting point, and the Falk College Sabermetrics Club added data on individual pitchers and the pitches they throw for each game (Pitch F/X data). From there, the group tested the impact of air density on pitch selection and performance compared to expectations, wrote the paper with their results, and submitted it in a competitive process for publication at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics conference. Matt Filippi at MIT Sloan Conference. Club places second at NYU competition In the Fall of 2013, five members of the Sabermetrics Club finished second in the SABR Diamond Dollars case competition at New York University. Their task was to forecast free agent contracts for catcher Brian McCann and starting pitcher Ubaldo Jiminez, find the cost of a draft pick, determine which contracts the players would get if they did not receive qualifying offers and determine how the players average annual salaries would change based on the length of the contract. There were three divisions (New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Graduate) and SU participated in the Mid-Atlantic against Georgetown, University of Connecticut, NYU, Wesleyan and Fordham. Executives from the Yankees, Mets, Orioles, Nationals, Phillies and MLB organizations judged the students. After the competition, the students sat in on a debriefing session with the judges, listened to a panel about the current state of analytics in the games, and joined a question and answer session with Vince Gennaro, president of SABR and host of the event. The trip was capped off by a networking opportunity and time to talk to the judges that the student members said made for a great experience in a rich learning environment. They hope to return to the event this Fall. ESPN the Magazine report ESPN the Magazine s July 7, 2014 issue included an article by Peter Keating titled How air density affects pitchers. The article featured the SPM Sabermetrics Club and Dr. Paul s research. The SU group found that clubhouse atmosphere matters to baseball teams and discovered how physics affects pitch selection. Join the club In addition to the MIT and NYU competitions, the club participated in a fantasy baseball league, met with executives from Major League Baseball Network s headquarters in Secaucus, NJ, and attended a New York Mets game. The club hosted several guest speakers via Skype, including Eno Sarris, of FanGraphs; and Syracuse University alumni Matt Gelb, of the Philadelphia Enquirer, and Harry Pavlidis, of Baseball Prospectus. The club is also in the process of becoming an official SABR chapter. For more information on the Sabermetrics Club, contact the Department of Sport Management at 315-443-9881, club president Matt Filippi at mfilippi@syr. edu, or SPM professor Dr. Rodney Paul at rpaul01@syr.edu. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS SPM Club raises over $30,000 for Food Bank of CNY The Sport Management Club at Syracuse University raised $30,500 for Food Bank of Central New York at its 9th Annual Charity Sports Auction. During the SU men s basketball game on December 7, 2013, Food Bank supporters placed bids on hundreds of items, including sports memorabilia, electronics, and tickets to major sporting events. In conjunction with the silent auction, the Club hosted an online auction, in collaboration with Steiner Sports Memorabilia, which showcased a number of premium items up for bid. All proceeds from these efforts benefited Food Bank of Central New York. As a result of months of hard work on behalf of over 75 Syracuse University students, 79,300 meals were provided to those families in need in our community, said Kate Veley, SPM Club co-advisor. We simply couldn t be more proud of our students, or more thankful of the Central New York community who once again recognized a need and worked together to help us make a difference. A check presentation took place during the SU men s basketball game on February 19, 2014, at the Carrier Dome. Pictured (from left) are Alyssa Wood, 15, auction co-chair; Kathleen Stress, executive vice president of Food Bank of Central New York; Carly Raimo, 15, auction co-chair; and Kate Veley, SPM Club co-advisor. Food Bank is thankful to have been chosen as the charity partner for the Sport Management Club s 9th Annual Charity Sports Auction, said Kathleen Stress, executive director of Food Bank of Central New York. Their efforts will help ensure that families and individuals in our community have nutritious food available to them through the emergency food network. Food Bank of Central New York is a not-for-profit organization working to eliminate hunger through nutritious food distribution, education, and advocacy in cooperation with the community. Food Bank serves as the primary food supplier for 261 emergency food assistance programs in 11 counties of New York State, distributing 13,420,441 pounds of food last year. Food Bank of Central New York is a certified member of Feeding America. Visit www.foodbankcny.org for more information on the agency and its programs. The SPM Club is a studentrun organization in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics Sport Management Department. Since its founding in 2005, the Club has now raised over $222,000 for local charities. For a video recap of the 2013 event, or to find out how to contribute to the 2014 auction, visit www.sucharitysports auction.com. Charity Sports Auction to celebrate 10th anniversary December 2014 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Sport Management Club s Charity Sports Auction. Evolving from a stand-alone event the first four years and held in conjunction with speakers that included David B. Falk, Bill Walton, Donovan McNabb, and Jim Abbott, the auction has since grown to encompass the entire backcourt area of the Carrier Dome during a Syracuse University men s basketball game, typically in early December. Looking back, it s truly phenomenal to think of how a small group of students created this in 2005, and watch as it has grown to reflect donations totaling more than $222,000 to nonprofits throughout the Syracuse community, said Kate Veley, co-advisor to the SPM Club. Hundreds of students over the past 10 years have made an impact not only on the charities designated as beneficiaries, but on their own resumes as many obtained full-time jobs as a result of the role they played in this event. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse, the American Diabetes Association, Golisano Children s Hospital at Upstate, Ronald McDonald House Charities of CNY, the SPCA of CNY, Upstate Cancer Center, Special Olympics New York, and Food Bank of CNY have all been recipients of the work of students from across SU s campus. Our 2014 beneficiary is Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York. With these donations, the auction has sponsored a guest room at the Ronald McDonald House; afforded 88 athletes the chance to participate in Special Olympics for an entire year; provided 79,300 meals for families in the Syracuse community; funded an in-patient waiting area in the radiation oncology center at Upstate Cancer Center; assisted in funding an on-site medical facility for the SPCA; and helped to keep a Boys & Girls Club open in Syracuse. Plans are underway for the 10th annual event and students are working diligently to ensure it will be another banner year for the student-run organization. If you d like to get involved, email auction cochairs Brooke Del Guercio at badelgue@syr.edu or Hannah Visnosky at hmvisnos@syr.edu, or visit www.spmcharitysportsauction.com for videos and additional information. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS A letter from the SPM Club president We are busy networking, fundraising, traveling and having fun By Dan Gorman, SPM 15 SPM Club President 2013-14 Dribble, pass, shoot, score. SPM Club is up the floor and out the door! It s Tuesday night. Do you know where your future Sport Management leaders are? Probably interacting with awesome guest speakers, planning for the annual charity auction, and consuming large quantities of pizza at club meetings in 010 Crouse-Hinds. Creating an atmosphere for my fellow SPM students to learn (and have fun) has been the highlight for me as president of the Sport Management Club this past year. Along with the Executive Board (Hannah Visnosky, Austin Stevenson, Josh Walls, Scott Kevy, and Greg Ackerman), we built a strong membership base (over 100 regular attendees), brought in premiere guest speakers (from the NFL, ESPN, SU Athletics, UFC), enhanced the Club s online presence (LinkedIn, Facebook, and its new website), generated revenue through Super Fan Sports Fundraising, and planned an exceptional networking trip to Toronto in April. In Toronto, we met with TrojanOne s senior management team, experienced a Raptors-Knicks game, and discussed the city s soccer culture with Toronto executives. Through our 9th Annual Charity Sports Auction and Leveling The Playing Field Equipment Drive, we demonstrated a longterm commitment to philanthropy in the Syracuse community. SPM Club members have shown the ability to persevere, adapt, and achieve great things. As with life, there were some low points especially the unexpected passing of freshman member Matt Brodsky but these served as reminders to the unique opportunities SU provides us, and brought us closer as a Sport Management community. Special thanks to Kate and Michael Veley for their ongoing interest and support of our activities. I highly recommend getting involved in a leadership role with the SPM Club. While the time commitments can be significant, the rewards are well worth it! I hope to see you at the Sport Management Club meetings this fall. Participating in the SPM Club s equipment donation drive for Leveling the Playing Field were (back from left) Jeff Maizes, Dan Gorman, Austin Stevenson, Jeremy Losak, (front from left) Mikayla Mizruchi, Kathryn Wickham, Mallory Miller, and Emma del Sol. NEWS AND EVENTS Tatyana McFadden is shown on her way to victory in the 2013 New York Marathon. It completed her historic sweep of the four major marathons: London, Boston, Chicago and New York, all in the same year. (Image from Changing Sports, Changing Lives) SPM produces its second research documentary Changing Sports, Changing Lives focuses on athletes with disabilities Students enrolled in SPM 346 Sport in American Society spent the 2013-14 academic year focusing their research efforts on sports that have been adapted to transform and enrich the lives of athletes with disabilities. In the fall semester, students worked as a research team, each one taking a specific assignment that became their final project. In the spring semester, these projects provided the collected body of research to produce a documentary film entitled, Changing Sports, Changing Lives. The film s world premiere was held in Watson Theater on the Syracuse University campus on April 28. The one-hour film was followed by an academic symposium and reception. Teaching the course and directing the film was Sport Management professor of practice Dennis Deninger, a three-time Emmy Award winner who spent 25 years at ESPN. This unique course is giving our students the opportunity to learn about the remarkable power of sports and to be part of a unique research project, said Deninger. Our goal in producing an annual Falk College documentary is to build an archive of scholarly work that will expand in each coming year. More than 65 people were interviewed across the country as the project explored a wide range of topics. The documentary covered the role of early innovators, such as Dr. Tim Nugent, in the development of wheelchair sports for soldiers who were disabled in World War II. Nugent, who coached his first wheelchair sports at the University of Illinois 66 years ago, is featured in the documentary. Symposium panelists included six-time Paralympian Bob Balk, chair of the International Paralympic Committee Athletes Council; Greg Callen, founder of Move Along Inc., which engages people with disabilities and their families in recreational activities; Dr. Nienke Dosa, medical director at SUNY Upstate University Hospital, who specializes in the treatment of children with disabilities; and Peyton Sefick, a member of the USA power soccer team and program coordinator for the Fitness Inclusion Network at Syracuse University s Burton Blatt Institute. The foundation of our program is experiential learning, said Michael Veley, director and chair, Department of Sport Management. It is a unique educational opportunity for our Sport Management students to research a topic that has influenced sports and create a timeless and influential documentary film. The following students were involved in the research and production of Changing Sports, Changing Lives: Andrew Feder, Jesus Ortiz, Jose Wells, Richard Ackah, Harrison Hascoe, Darius Joshua, Jenna Kielar, Bobby Krivitsky, Charles Lerner, Courtney Lyons, Matthew Miselis, Wayne Morgan, Tyler Piccotti, Michael Reiley, Kate Ruben, Ronald Schiltz, Benjamin Shapiro, Doug Shulman, and John Wilson. For professor Deninger to leave ESPN and spend his time creating opportunities for students to get hands-on experience like creating a professional documentary is absolutely admirable, Wells said. It shows that he is not only passionate about sports, but he is also willing to go the extra mile to make sure students are just as passionate as he is. Each year, SPM 346 identifies a single topic for students to conduct original research and interviews, use primary sources, and explore multiple facets of the subject. The history, culture and dramatic growth of lacrosse were the subject for the inaugural Falk College research documentary, America s First Sport. It premiered in Syracuse in April 2013, and has aired nationwide on ESPNU. Both films are available online. America s First Sport can be seen at https:// vimeo.com/64675548. Changing Sports, Changing Lives can be seen at https:// vimeo.com/93285524. NEWS AND EVENTS A lesson in social responsibility SPM 101 students sleep overnight in cardboard boxes, collect personal care items to benefit Rescue Mission In the past year, an average of 235 people who might otherwise have been homeless stayed each night at Syracuse s Rescue Mission shelter. On October 10, 2013, 36 students enrolled in SPM 101 Personal and Social Responsibility slept in cardboard boxes overnight on the SU Quad to raise awareness about homelessness in the Syracuse area and beyond. As part of their effort, they collected personal care items to benefit men using the Rescue Mission shelter in the Syracuse community, including razors, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks and underwear. We talked about this project the very first day of class, said Falk College associate professor of Sport Management Jeff Pauline, who leads the course. Many of the students were initially apprehensive about sleeping outside. However, the students are beginning to understand they have an important role to play in giving back to the communities where they live and work today and into the future. The Donation bins were set up around the Quad during the event. students are focused on educating others about the issues of homelessness and doing something practical, like collecting supplies. The Rescue Mission has been a great partner to work with the past few years and we were excited to be working with them again. The coursework and related projects address personal ethical principles and social responsibility. Partially funded through a gift by SPM Advisory Board member David Kleinhandler, it is offered through the Falk College Department of Sport Management. Sleeping on the quad in a cardboard box really made me realize how hard it is to be homeless, said Sport Management student Angela Diaz 16. I learned to appreciate my bed more, to appreciate my commodities because not everyone can have what I have. This event taught me appreciation and I feel that it would be a good experience for everyone. Boxes for the event were donated by Syracuse Moving and Storage and Dunk & Bright. Students could bring a sleeping bag/blanket, duct tape, and a small pillow but no electronics or other comforts were permitted. Students decorated their boxes and created educational signage for the campout area to raise visibility of the event. Pauline arrived at the SU Quad at about 11 a.m. that morning to begin setting up with the help of Sport Venue and Event Management graduate student Danielle D Arcy. Students began arriving after 2 p.m., with most staying overnight on the Quad, leaving about 7 a.m. the next day. According to the Rescue Mission, the Cardboard Campout is similar to a charity race in that participants approach others to ask for donations. In exchange, the participating students camp out overnight in a box Another Cardboard Campout is planned for Fall 2014 as part of SPM 101. Students spent the night in cardboard boxes on the SU Quad. Students in SPM 101 are shown with Sport Management associate professor Jeff Pauline (second from right) and Falk College Dean Diane Murphy (far right) at the Cardboard Campout in October 2013. NEWS AND EVENTS SPM students embark on European Olympic Odyssey Nine students in the Department of Sport Management, led by instructor Pat Ryan, traveled to Europe in May as part of a 19-day, four-country Olympic Odyssey trip. The program began in London, where students experienced the impact of the 2012 Summer Games. From London, they traveled to Paris, birthplace of the modern Olympic movement, and then on to Lausanne to inspect the present-day Olympic Capital, headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1915. The group then headed to Olympia, home of the ancient Olympics, and lastly on to Athens, site of the 2004 Summer Games. I really enjoyed interacting with the students on this trip, said Ryan, who completed his sixth Olympic Odyssey trip. They learned a lot about Olympic history, and being able to interact with senior Olympic management is a great experience for them. In addition, students met with representatives from the Court of Arbitration for Sport to better understand how the Olympic movement is managed and its relationship to the world of sport throughout history. Students spent the Spring 2014 semester learning about Olympic games past, present, and future in SPM 356-Olympic Sport Management. Ryan and his students kept a blog of the SU Abroad trip. Find it online at http://olympicodyssey2014.blogspot.com. SPM Winter Olympic Odyssey 2014 In February, 20 undergraduate Sport Management students traveled to Lake Placid as part of their Olympic Sport Management class. The students were accompanied by SPM instructor Pat Ryan, SPM professor John Wolohan, and Sport Venue and Event Management graduate students Elissa Roberts and Taylor Jackson. The group stayed overnight at the United States Olympic Training Center and toured the Olympic hockey arena, where the 1980 miracle on ice took place, as well as visited the Olympic Jumping Complex, where they took an elevator to the top of the 120-meter ski-jumping tower. They also toured downtown Lake Placid and visited the Olympic Sports Complex, home to the bobsled, skeleton and luge tracks, and the biathlon range. Students learned how Lake Placid continues to be one of the premiere winter Olympic sites in the world, Ryan said. It was another great trip for Sport Management students to experience the organization and activities of a true Olympic village in person. Guest speakers included Ambrose Serrano, United States Olympic Committee head strength and conditioning coach, as well as Lake Placid historian and tour guide Jim Rogers. Many on the trip played basketball and volleyball in the Olympic Training Center, where Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls were staying. It was the fifth annual Winter Olympic Odyssey trip to Lake Placid for Sport Management. SPMNews 23 Summer 2014

NEWS AND EVENTS Students immerse themselves in Los Angeles sports culture For the fourth consecutive year, with special thanks to Andrea and Jeffrey Lomasky for their continued generosity and support, the Department of Sport Management offered a course and eight-day trip to Los Angeles during spring break. Twenty-one students were allowed the opportunity to meet with more than 35 industry executives and practitioners in a variety of settings. The Lomasky s son Marc is a 2012 Sport Management alumnus. The students were accompanied by SPM director and chair Michael Veley, and Kate Veley, events and alumni manager for the Falk College. The students met with executives from the Toshiba Classic Professional Golf Association (PGA); the Santa Anita Racetrack; NASCAR; National Hockey League s LA Kings; National Basketball Association (NBA); Major League Soccer (MLS); Los Angeles Dodgers; intercollegiate athletics (UCLA and USC); FOX Sports; Mandalay Sports & Entertainment; ESPN; the Anschutz Events Group (AEG Worldwide); Rose Bowl; Los Angeles Coliseum; Staples Center; LA Live; and Nokia Theatre. Students toured Hollywood, the Hollywood Bowl, the Fox Studios lot, the Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Sports Museum of LA, Stub Hub Park, Olympic sport training complex, Dodger Stadium, UCLA Hall of Fame, Pauley Pavilion, John McKay Center, Writer s Guild Theatre, and the LA Kings practice facility (Toyota Center). Additionally, they attended a Los Angeles Clippers game and saw the NHL champion LA Kings play the Toronto Maple Leafs. The group also enjoyed an evening of comedy with the cast of The Goldbergs during an SU in LA-sponsored alumni event, where they met Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud, and his wife, Dr. Ruth Chen. This year s group had the privilege of spending nearly two hours with NBA legend Bill Walton during his time as a presenter at the National Roth Conference. I m the luckiest guy on earth, never more so than in moments like this with special friends, Walton said. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, take photos and hear some of the many stories that make Walton a legend in the sports industry. This year, for the first time, students met with two Sport Management alumni who had recently secured their jobs in Los Angeles as a result of their participation in the first LA Immersion trip. Rayna Linowes 13 toured students through the UCLA campus and Andrew Arrospide 13 was one of the many speakers they heard at AEG. The students not only met with very prominent sports executives from numerous facets of the industry, but also Olympic athletes, NBA and NHL Hall of Famers, a Kentucky Derby jockey and Hollywood actors, said Michael Veley. It truly is a transformative experience and it is extremely gratifying to see students now land jobs in Los Angeles through the networking connections they have made on this trip. The trip accomplished the objective of meeting with as many sport entities and industry executives as feasible, including media, marketing agencies, athlete representation, professional teams, collegiate programs, sport venue facilities, etc., for the purposes of educating students and creating a greater awareness of the overall profession, while building the SU brand on the West Coast. David Berger, SPM 15, said, The trip provided unbelievable insight into the sport industry and most notably the importance of networking through establishing and maintaining good relationships. Students go down under on Australian Odyssey Falk College Endowed Professor of Sport Management Rick Burton took 12 Syracuse University students, including five Sport Management majors, to Australia from July 9-30, 2014 as part of a threecredit course titled SPM 400 Australian Sport Industry. It was the fourth annual trip for the course. The group visited Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns (the Great Barrier Reef) and Surfer s Paradise (the Gold Coast), taking in professional football and rugby, as well as snorkeling, scuba diving and surfing. Burton, who previously worked in Australia, said the purpose of the trip is to expose American students to a different country s sport, history and culture and has broadened the trip so it includes more than just sporting events or participatory sports. The students stay in each city about five days and along with classroom work, they mix in cultural studies, with trips to the rainforest and time with aboriginal elders. Burton, who teaches the Sports, Media and Society class, said, This trip really gives our students a chance to see a different sports culture that is every bit as vibrant as the one they are familiar with in the U.S. They know they live in a global economy so it s valuable for them to get embedded in a different culture and see unique variables and templates. It can change the way they think. Australians are such avid fans and it s great that Syracuse SPM students get this international exposure. I love this class and certainly love Australia. Sponsorship Outreach Coordinator Eric Brest 13 enjoys NBA title run in first year with Spurs Eric Brest, SPM 13, always knew he wanted to work in an NBA team s front office. So he was thrilled to land a job as a basketball operations quality assurance assistant for the San Antonio Spurs in August 2013. Never did he imagine that in his first full year on the job, the team would win the NBA championship. But that s exactly what happened when San Antonio beat the Miami Heat in June 2014 for the title. It s been my lifelong dream, Brest said. It s pretty crazy to think that this is my first year in the league. It s been fantastic. Brest, 22, minored in international business and spent his last three years at Syracuse University working for SU assistant men s basketball coach Mike Hopkins. He worked on special projects for Hopkins, including gathering of advanced scouting reports and providing analysis of advanced statistics for the Syracuse players. He created a recruiting database and Eric Brest 13 with the 2014 NBA Championship Trophy. helped with Hopkins basketball academy. That s not his only sport industry experience, as Brest interned for the Austin Toros, a team in the NBA Developmental League, and volunteered with Basketball Without Borders, where he traveled to Senegal to work with current and former NBA players. For me, it s been a long time coming, Brest said. It s still a little surreal. I get to walk around with a Spurs logo on my chest. Brest s main duty with the Spurs is to coordinate the team s scouts and oversee the team s database on players. He also coordinates players pre-draft workout schedules. Brest said his Syracuse University education paved the way to his career in the sport industry. The SPM program puts students in situations to succeed, he said. I remember our first assignment for Professor Veley was to cold-call someone in the sports industry and conduct an interview. Above all else, it is the Senior Capstone that sets the program apart. To be required to find a real-world opportunity while still being a college student is exactly the type of practice students need to prepare for the next step. The Post-Standard s Mike Waters contributed to this report. SPMNews 34 Summer 2014

ALUMNI PROFILE Meet Andrew Arrospide, SPM 13, sales analyst, AEG Los Angeles Meet Jake Berkowitz, SPM 13, event manager, Cross Insurance Center Meet Nicole Bucholtz, SPM 08, director of athletic marketing and promotions, Duquesne University Andrew Arrospide began working at the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) in January 2014 as a partnership sales analyst in the Global Partnerships Department. His main duties are to complete brand audits, prospect potential partners, create sponsorship proposals, assist in activating and managing partner accounts, plus coordinate administrative duties and manage relationships with customers. I ve been fortunate enough to be part of a few meetings with prospective partners, he said. Being exposed to those meetings has taught me a lot about the amount of work that goes into each sales pitch. Arrospide was part of Sport Management s Los Angeles Immersion in 2011, which he said provided him valuable networking experience and professional contacts in the sport industry. I was lucky enough to be a part of the first LA Immersion trip, during my sophomore year at Syracuse. It was a great decision for me, as it became a part of my story to prospective employers during my search for a capstone. The advice we were given by the many executives on the trip will go a long way in helping me to grow my career, he said. Arrospide said his senior Capstone experience with AEG prepared him for his current role with the company. There s nothing greater than having real work experience under your belt going into the job hunt, he noted. Completing a capstone, and having experience enables you to hit the ground running once you re accepted into your first job. Arrospide says working in Los Angeles also has its perks, since Hollywood is not far away. Yes, when working in this industry, you re fortunate enough to meet celebrities, he said. In 10 years, I see myself being successful, hopefully leading and growing a team of younger executives. I hope to have gained a strong knowledge of the industry. I see myself being hungry for continued success, he said. Arrospide has some advice for current Sport Management students: Network and develop strong relationships with people in the industry. You must intern, volunteer, work hard, and work smart. Jake Berkowitz 13 is an event manager at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine. The center, which opened in the Fall of 2013, is a Global Spectrum-managed venue and home to the University of Maine basketball teams. Berkowitz is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing all aspects of an event at the multi-purpose facility, which features an arena and a convention center under one roof. With college and high school basketball games, concerts, Broadway-type shows, expositions, trade shows, and more, every day and every event provides a new challenge. Berkowitz said his professional success, up to this point, can be directly traced back to his four years in the Sport Management program at Syracuse University. He stressed the importance of networking, from the first day he arrived at SU until graduation day and said he gained as much experience as possible, following the advice of professors and advisors in the Sport Management Department. Although, sometimes hearing the same thing over and over again could get frustrating, I made sure to listen to their advice and take advantage of the opportunities that were made available to me, Berkowitz said. Networking and experience led him to the Cross Insurance Center. During his time at Syracuse, Jake worked at the Carrier Dome in event operations, in the Athletic Department, and volunteered for the SU football team. Working with the SPM Club Charity Auction was a valuable learning experience and sparked my interest in event management, he said. Having a vital role in the 2010 and 2011 auctions, as the inventory committee chair, I learned what it takes to put on an event from start to finish. That firsthand experience has helped me out tremendously in my current event manager role. Sports has been a passion of mine forever, he continued. This goal became more realistic with my Senior Capstone, when I was the event management intern at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. That internship opened all sorts of possibilities. Nicole (Imbrogno) Bucholtz 08 is the director of marketing and promotions for Duquesne University s Department of Athletics in Pittsburgh, PA. Bucholtz, a member of Sport Management s inaugural class, graduated with experiences in various facets of the sport industry from minor league baseball (Daytona Cubs) and collegiate media relations, to professional baseball ticket sales (Pittsburgh Pirates) and professional football events (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) all which gave her the tools to succeed in collegiate athletic marketing. She began her career at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and then became a marketing and promotions assistant at the University of Memphis, where she worked on marketing, planning new ballpark grand openings, hosting NCAA and conference tournaments, and working ESPN s Midnight Madness events. Bucholtz started at Duquesne as the assistant director of marketing and promotions in 2011 and has worked her way to director in less than three years. She oversees all 16 of Duquesne s Division I athletic programs. When asked, What exactly do you do? she replies, I like to describe my job as the choreographer of everything on the court or field besides the game itself. I m a DJ, the pep band and spirit squad liaison. I oversee the student section, work with the video board crew, activate sponsorships, and write public announcer scripts. Literally, the only thing my staff and I don t have a hand in on game day is actually dribbling the ball or throwing a pass. I loved my experience at SU and brag about my alma mater all the time, Bucholtz said. That s how I want alumni from Duquesne to feel when they graduate. I am so fortunate for all of the mentors that have helped shape me personally and professionally. She invites all future and current Sport Management students to contact her with questions or for career advice via email at imbrognon@duq.edu or @NicoleBucholtz on Twitter. SPMNews 35 Summer 2014

ALUMNI PROFILE Meet Andrew Diamond, SPM 11, sports editor, The Topps Company Meet Stacie Gerstel, SPM 10, marketing manager, InsideSEG Meet Rayna Linowes, SPM 13, marketing assistant, UCLA Athletics Andrew Diamond 11 is a Sports Editor for The Topps Company in New York City. His day-to-day responsibilities range from brand marketing and social media management to baseball card design/content orchestration. Diamond, who started working at Topps in 2013, works on a four-person marketing team for the Bowman Baseball brand, a Topps-owned brand that produces baseball cards every year with a heavy emphasis on top MLB prospects and rookies. Prior to his current role with Topps, Diamond worked in brand marketing/hospitality with Octagon, in Media Sales with FOX Sports Network, and in video production with MLB.com. While in those roles, he longed for a job that would utilize his vast knowledge of baseball players and statistics, while also incorporating his passion for new product ideas and marketing initiatives. He has been on the job for about 10 months, and says he continues to gain valuable experience in social media, brand marketing, and licensing. He manages a twitter handle (@BowmanCards), which conducts weekly contests/giveaways, and promotes the Bowman Baseball brand. He plays a role in selecting which players make it into each product, while also assisting the licensing team with autograph signings and scouting new talent. After a year at FOX Sports, he realized that media sales wasn t for him, and pondered how he could transition into something that he loved. He remembered his freshman year at SU, when he decided to get involved with Synercuse, the SPM Club s Charity Auction, and Syracuse-Steiner Collectibles. It gave me confidence, and most importantly an open mind, Diamond said. He said he then realized that he didn t have to do things conventionally and opted to reboot his young career by starting over in a new field and new environment. He left FOX Sports to take a part-time job in video production at MLB.com, while also coaching his high school baseball team. Andrew loved baseball, and wanted to pursue a career that incorporated his vast knowledge of the game. After spending eight months at MLB.com, he landed at Topps. Managing and allocating more than 400 tournament badges by six-digit serial number to the 2014 PGA Masters may sound like a daunting task, but after four years it is par for the course in event management for SPM alum Stacie Gerstel 10, who is a marketing manager for InsideSEG, a CAA Sports Company. When our staff on-site at the Masters yells out the six-digit serial numbers to ensure they are allocated to the proper guests, who start arriving at 6 a.m., we call it Badge Bingo, Gerstel said. When working 18-hour days, I ve learned you have to make some of the more mundane tasks a little more fun. Pairing her SPM major with a marketing minor, Gerstel completed her Senior Capstone at Inside Sports & Entertainment Group in the Spring of 2010, where she spent much of her time under the tutelage of InsideSEG partner Jim Zissler 01, ultimately parlaying her Capstone experience into a full-time role upon graduation. InsideSEG creates and sells customized experience packages to the most in-demand sports and entertainment events worldwide. Gerstel s day-to-day tasks are dependent on which major sports and entertainment events are taking place at the time, largely focusing on inventory management, building and managing client programs, and shipping logistics. My favorite part of working for InsideSEG is traveling to the major events and managing it from start to finish, she said. It allows me to see every aspect of what goes into producing these client programs and gives me the responsibility to meet and exceed clients expectations. I experienced my first trip to the Masters during my Capstone, and it taught me so much in a short amount of time. This on-site exposure gave me the confidence to manage these events. Gerstel credits her education at SU, specifically the guidance of the SPM faculty, to allowing her to accomplish so much in her career. Traveling to different countries through the Olympic Odyssey program gave her a window into being on-site for events, which she has continued at InsideSEG. After graduating from Syracuse University in 2013, Rayna Linowes decided to start her career in sport management 3,000 miles from campus, accepting a position with UCLA Athletics in January 2014. As a marketing assistant on the Los Angeles campus, she develops and executes marketing efforts for UCLA baseball, track and field, golf, cross country, and men s and women s soccer, as well as assists with UCLA football year-round. She manages all UCLA athletics community relations and outreach. Learning from and collaborating with some of the top collegiate marketing personnel in the nation has been a highlight for me, Linowes said. I built a complete marketing plan for UCLA baseball and exceeded all attendance and promotional goals for the season. Linowes traveled to Los Angeles during Spring Break 2011 as part of the Sport Management LA Immersion trip. She said the connections she made on that trip allowed her to feel more comfortable when applying for the UCLA job. We toured the UCLA campus and met with Bill Bennett, who works in UCLA s Sports Information department. This past fall, I came across the job posting on the UCLA website, and immediately thought to contact Mr. Bennett, as well as the director of SU in LA, to inquire about the opportunity, Linowes said. Linowes said her SPM classes and extracurricular activities prepared her for a career in the sport industry. My experience as an intern at the Baseball Hall of Fame, together with SU Athletics, helped me understand that the success of the sports industry is directly tied to creating an enjoyable experience for the fans, she said. Linowes recenty stepped out of her athletic shoes and into heels to attend the 2014 Grammy Awards with fellow SPM alum Andrew Arrospide. (See photo on Page 29.) She said she has also met Reggie Miller and Luke Wilson. Syracuse University changed my life in countless ways, Linowes said. Despite its size, the university offers its students immediate access to incredible opportunities. SPMNews 36 Summer 2014
