1 Sport Management Department of Sport Management Summer 2015 Respecting the past. Representing the future : A Decade of accomplishment I want Syracuse University s sport management program to be the number-one program in the country. This gift is my way of making a commitment that the students at SU have the facilities, the professors and the alumni base they need to have that kind of program. David Falk, Founder and CEO, FAME As the Department of Sport Management begins to embark upon its second decade, we reflect on how the Syracuse University program has evolved from its embryotic stages into one of the elite academic programs in North America. Without question, the hallmark moment of the past 10 years was the establishment of the David B. Falk Center for Sport Management with a transformative founding gift of $5 million in Later a $15 million commitment created the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics and eventually led to the Falk College being located in the former College of Law. Through the financial generosity of benefactors David 72 and Rhonda Falk 74, this academic initiative strengthened an already strong curriculum with new synergy, the hiring of several nationally-acclaimed faculty, expanded opportunities for students and unparalleled access to industry practitioners. It has allowed the program to fully prepare the next generation of sport professionals for successful careers. A standing-room only celebration honoring the Falks and their innovative approach to education took place at Madison Square Garden in April 2008 one month before the first class of graduates would earn their SPM bachelor s degree. David Falk sets the tone. He s not one to settle for second place, said Sport Management Director and Chair Michael Veley. He s an extraordinary entrepreneur and business leader, an alumnus who has been a game changer, and he and I share similar philosophies. He s passionate about sports, and is truly committed to education, social responsibility, and civic engagement. continued on page 2 Sport Management director Michael Veley welcomes the Class of 2018 to Falk College at freshmen orientation in August The David B. 2 continued from page 1 The Falk Center also inspired other alumni and friends of the program to provide financial support such as SU graduate David Kleinhandler, who provided underwriting for student-athletes to obtain vital life skills training through expanded course offerings taught by Dr. Jeff Pauline. Under the leadership and vision of Dean Diane Lyden Murphy and Michael Veley, Sport Management evolved from an academic program with two faculty members in its first year into a full department that now features a broadbased and rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum in its bachelor degree program; a graduate degree in Sport Venue and Event Management; a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Intercollegiate Athletic Advising and Support; and an academic minor in Sport Management. The department has created collaborative academic partnerships with SU s School of Education (CAS); S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications; Martin Whitman School of Management; and School of Information Studies. Since its inception, more than 30 new courses have been added and the department is developing a second undergraduate degree program the nation s first degree in Sport Analytics -- to better prepare the next generation of sport industry managers. Courses have been conceptualized and developed to provide students with educational experiences off-campus. A message from the Dean The foundation of Falk College s history is built on excellence in our academic programs, all of which are purposefully designed to prepare students to make a difference in the lives of others as Falk alumni. For the past decade, I have witnessed our students, working side-by-side with their faculty and staff mentors, embracing opportunities for research, experiential learning, and community service while excelling in the classroom. As we recognize the 10th anniversary of sport management at Syracuse University and reflect on the commitment by so many that has elevated our programs in sports and events to national prominence, I am both proud and grateful of all we have accomplished together. I look forward to so many new milestones and highlights to come in the years ahead. Diane Lyden Murphy, M.A., M.S.W., Ph.D. Dean, Falk College For the past seven years, the SPM Olympic Odyssey course has included a three-week trip with SPM instructor Pat Ryan to England, France, Switzerland, and Greece that encompasses the Ancient Games to the Modern Olympic movement. Falk Endowed Professor Rick Burton has led a summer travel course to Australia, and SPM s annual Los Angeles immersion trip during spring break engages students with more than 40 sports executives and practitioners. In fact, three students have obtained jobs directly from the connections they made during the trip. The graduate students take an immersion trip to Philadelphia each year to tour facilities and meet with industry practitioners. Additionally, academic courses afford students the opportunity to travel to sites such as the Winter Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Yankee Stadium, and numerous sitespecific destinations tied directly to various course curriculums. Professor of Practice Dennis Deninger s Super Bowl elective class annually draws more than 100 students while his Sport in American Society course has produced two, hour-long documentaries and also includes an educational symposium each year dealing with a societal issues associated with sports. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING The cornerstone of the Syracuse University Sport Management success has been its multitude of experiential learning opportunities associated with its theory-to-practice teaching continued on page 3 SPM students got a behind-the-scenes tour of the NBA Headquarters in Lori Robinson 09 earned the prestigious McNair Scholar and has the distinction of becoming the first Sport Management graduate to complete her doctorate, earning her Ph.D. from LSU. 3 continued from page 2 methodology. In conjunction with the Syracuse Athletics Department, the Carrier Dome has become a living laboratory for students. During the first decade, hundreds of students have volunteered their time, energy, and expertise to gain experience working at a variety of events hosted by the iconic sports venue. Two of the first initiatives were Syracuse Steiner Sport Collectibles and Syner-Cuse. An innovative partnership linked Steiner Sports Marketing, SU Athletics, and Sport Management to provide students with professional training and business experience in marketing research, branding, business development, e-commerce marketing, product development and retail sales. Under the direction of Steiner CEO Brandon Steiner 81, the students marketed and sold one-of-a-kind athletic memorabilia and autographed collectibles. Syner-Cuse (now known as Cuse Crew) allows students to assist several of SU s non-revenue sports teams with marketing, social media, and promotional efforts. Students work to enhance attendance, create social media campaigns, fulfill sponsorship contracts, and develop community service initiatives. PARTNERSHIPS Over the past decade, Sport Management faculty and students have worked directly with several corporate partners and businesses to develop numerous course projects designed to enhance branding, marketing and sales of companies. A sampling of these projects included: Three-year partnership with KeyBank 44 Rewards program, where students measured the effectiveness of advertising and marketing messages at the Carrier Dome at SU football and basketball games and their respective fan bases. Dale and Thomas Popcorn students spent a summer conducting market research at various major and minor league ballparks to brand snack food products to baseball fans and presented their findings and marketing recommendations to the company s CEO and executive managers. National Baseball Hall of Fame market research designed to increase attendance. Steiner Sports Marketing product development, niche marketing Home Depot branding and consumer sales proposals New York Yankees ticket sales Syracuse Chiefs front office re-structuring and re-branding initiatives NASCAR Kinetics marketing competition against 20 university programs to promote auto racing Baseball Sabermetrics analytical research of players, teams, and promotional trends New York State Special Olympics Syracuse Crunch Hockey First Tee golf events One of the most valuable components of SU s Department of Sport Management has always been its strong connection with the overall sport industry. A signature element of this program is the Senior Capstone. More than 400 students have completed this rigorous 14-week, semester-long course. While Syracuse has developed many solid partnerships with sports entities across the country that consistently mentor our students, we have actually placed students in more than 180 different organizations! This includes international experiences in Brazil, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, and Japan. More than 40 percent of graduates have obtained their first job directly from their Capstone, an outstanding accomplishment. EVOLVING The program has evolved from two faculty members and a part-time administrative assistant into a 16-person department, including 11 faculty members and three internship placement coordinators. Dr. Gina Pauline, our first hired faculty member, now serves as the undergraduate director, and the graduate program continued on page 4 The Sport Management Club has received the Chancellor s Award for Public Engagement and Scholarship eight times. The Sport Management Learning Community for incoming freshmen was established in 2009 and continues to make Flint Hall the social hub of campus. A milestone during SPM s first decade was the establishment of the nation s first and only collegiate chapter of Women in Sports and Events (WISE). The club held a symposium in 2013 featuring, among others, (from left) Falk College Dean Diane Murphy; MLB Network Director of Broadcast Operations and SPM Advisory Board member Patti Fallick; and ESPN Senior Vice President and SPM Advisory Board member Laurie Orlando. Also shown are Sport Management Director Michael Veley and Director of the Newhouse Sports Media Center John Nicholson. College benefactor David B. Falk often guest lectures in Sport Management classes. SPMNews 3 Summer 2015
4 continued from page 3 in Sport Venue and Event Management is now under the director of Dr. Jeff Pauline. The new Sport Analytics degree creation is being led by Dr. Rodney Paul, one of the foremost economists in the world, who has supervised most of the SPM Honors Thesis projects over the past several years. COMMUNITY SERVICE AND ENGAGEMENT Teaching students about the business of sports isn t the only attribute that characterizes the first decade. Social responsibility, civic engagement, and community service are also at the forefront. The Sport Management Club was the first experiential learning-based element that was introduced during Fall The student organization embraced the philosophy of becoming a service organization and it continues to be one of the leading student groups at Syracuse. Over the 10 years, its signature Charity Sports Auction has now raised and donated nearly $275,000 to Syracuse-area charities, largely due to the leadership of advisor Kate Veley, who serves as manager of alumni and special events at Falk College. The 2014 auction established a club record of donating more than $59,100 to Make-A-Wish of Central New York. For the eighth year, the Club received the Chancellor s Award for Public Engagement and Scholarship. The Club also received the University s prestigious Orange Circle award in Another milestone during its first decade was the establishment of the nation s first and only collegiate chapter of Women in Sports and Events (WISE). The female organization has held two educational symposiums, fundraising events, and networking opportunities to further the movement of women building careers in sports. The Baseball Sabermetrics Club and Hockey Analytics Club have more than 40 students working with Dr. Rodney Paul. They have presented research at competitions including the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics conference, NYU SABR Diamond Dollars case competition, and MLB Analytics competition. Last year, their research was featured in ESPN the Magazine. Additionally, instructor Pat Ryan has established a Sports Sales Club that will begin in earnest in Fall As we move into the new on-campus facility, students interested in gaining ticket sales experience will work directly with the Carrier Dome group sales call center which will be located in our complex. Without question, the success of this program and its national reputation have been built on the legacy of students who have embraced the opportunities created by Falk College, taken advantage of the vast resources offered by the University, and established a bedrock of success for future students. It is impossible to recognize the multitude of honors, but it would be short-sided not to mention two of the most prestigious honors any Syracuse undergraduate could earn. Lori Robinson 09 earned the Mc- Nair Scholar. She has the distinction of becoming the first Sport Management graduate to complete her doctorate, earning her PhD. from LSU. Eight SPM graduates have been named Remembrance Scholars, one of the highest honors given to an undergraduate. They include: Eileen Finn 10; Sam Staton 10; Ashley Robbins 11; Sarah Costello 13; Fergus Barrie 15; Lauren Strand 15; Julie Bengis 16; and Hannah Visnosky 16. GROWTH For the fifth consecutive year, applications have increased more than 21 percent! We have become a global program, attracting students from Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Turkey, and the Virgin Islands. We have assembled an Advisory Board that is a Who s Who in American Sports (see pages 26-27). Their financial support, tireless effort, and commitment to excellence is second to none. They have collectively helped us build our brand. Board members have assisted hundreds of students who have benefited from Capstone and career opportunities, their insightfulness, continued on page 5 Sport Management students have the opportunity to gain industry experience at events and arenas around the country, including the Carrier Dome on SU s campus. A partnership links Steiner Sports Marketing, SU Athletics, and Sport Management to provide students with professional training and business experience. 5 DIRECTOR S GREETING Evolution. The process of continuous development and gradual, progressive change has defined the first decade of Sport Management at Syracuse University -- and will continue -- as we reflect back and act forward. Our vision statement is To become the leading Sport Management program in North America. To achieve this, we must be vigilant, progressive and visionary. We must work collectively, so past, current, and future students will become part of the next generation of leaders in sports. Our plans are to create a second undergraduate degree -- in Sport Analytics -- that would be the first of its kind in the country. This will meet an emerging need in sports and offer numerous job opportunities for those students with high math, analytical, and computer Michael Veley programming aptitudes. The momentum of our department and Falk College continues to skyrocket as we transition into our new on-campus home, located in the former Law School next to the Carrier Dome. Our applications and enrollment are at an all-time high. For the fifth consecutive year, the number of students applying to Sport Management has increased at least 21 percent. Student engagement has been, and will remain, the foundation of our program. The sports world is uber competitive and engagement is an absolute necessity if students wish to succeed. In this newsletter you will find countless examples of how we, as educators, strongly believe it is our responsibility to create learning opportunities outside of the classroom. This builds character, teaches social responsibility, and provides invaluable real-world experience that employers seek. My sincerest congratulations to our recent graduates, in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. The Class of 2015 established many noteworthy milestones. It is our largest graduating class with 78 students receiving Bachelor s degrees. Thirty-five students, or 45 percent of this year s class, graduated with honors achieving a GPA of 3.4 or higher the most ever in our program history. Nearly one out of four students graduated Magna or Summa Cum Laude, attaining a GPA of 3.6 or higher. A record 12 students earned the distinction of being named to the Academic Achievement Honor Roll by attaining a minimum 3.7 GPA for each of the previous seven consecutive semesters at SU, which is an outstanding accomplishment. Students successfully completed all 43 Fall and Spring Senior Capstones and we have nearly 31 additional students who will complete their Capstones in summer Their fields of study have included marketing, data analytics, business and finance, communications, public relations, broadcasting, sales, event management, player representation, facilities management and operations, corporate sponsorship and branding, non-profit organizations, and foundations. They have worked in professional golf, baseball, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, college athletics, collegiate bowl games, and Special Olympics. This industry tests your patience. So, stay hungry and focused. Patience, talent and perseverance will win but not always in your time frame! The road to success is often longer than you d like, but shorter than you imagine. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and encourage teamwork. Get better every day! Don t live the same year 75 times and call it a life! We pledge to meet the needs and demands of higher education and the sports industry with your help and support. I invite you to become engaged -- however you can -- and share in our journey. Best wishes for a productive year ahead. Sincerely, Michael Veley Director and Chair Rhonda S. Falk Endowed Professor of Sport Management continued from page 4 and professional networking. We are truly indebted to each and every past and present member. While there are a multitude of accomplishments, we must always remember and continue to honor the lives of two Sport Management students who passed unexpectedly while attending Syracuse University. Jason Morales died while on his Capstone in New York City in spring The following semester, promising freshman Matt Brodsky had completed his first semester at SU when he was stricken with an illness. Awards in their name and honor will be presented to graduating seniors as we pay tribute to these two young men. As we respect the past and prepare to represent the future, we will recruit the best scholars possible, along with nationally-acclaimed faculty, and continue our visionary approach to education. We believe our new analytics degree will be cutting edge the first in the country. We strive to create online courses, develop an Executive Education or Certificate of Advanced Studies in Sport Management for practicing sports professionals, and build our international and domestic footprint. We invite you along for the journey! SAVE THE DATE Sport Management will hold a 10th Anniversary Reunion Celebration on October 23, 2015, during Orange Central Homecoming. Stay tuned for details! 6 NEWS AND EVENTS We ve Moved! Sport Management offices now located in MacNaughton Hall on main campus Within hours of the opening of a student lounge in the new Falk Complex in January 2015, students were making it their own. The students went in there and they started moving around the furniture, making areas for collaboration, recalls Falk College Dean Diane Lyden Murphy. Every time you go down there the furniture is placed in different ways as they need them. Students, along with faculty and staff, are settling in to the new site of the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics in the Falk Complex at MacNaughton and White halls, which formerly housed the College of Law. This is the first time all the college s disciplines will be in one location, so it is the big coming home, Dean Murphy said. The central administration offices had previously been housed at 119 Euclid Ave., so that had been the centralized location for many gatherings, while the various departments had sites across campus, including the Sport Management office located off campus at Drumlins Golf Course and Country Club. The transition to move the various departments and administrative offices began over Winter Break and continues as renovations wrap up. Faculty members have come together over the years to do interdisciplinary work, especially through the work of the College Research Center, but this does make it more convenient and maybe more spontaneous, Dean Murphy said. I ve heard the faculty saying and I feel the same way it s just nice to run into colleagues in the halls, and not have to go outside or drive. The new community spaces in the Falk Complex have expanded those opportunities for faculty in the various disciplines to be engaged with each other. It s those types of ideas that went into more than three years of planning for the convergence of Falk College s five academic departments and its administrative offices. Surveys were done with students, faculty, and staff to help understand what the needs were and what could be included within the budget. Plans were developed through the Office of Campus Planning, Design and Construction, project architect Ashley McGraw and design partner Gilbert Displays. Each academic unit has an office with the department chair, graduate and undergraduate directors, and administrative assistants. Faculty members are assigned nearby offices. In January 2015, the move included the Office of the Dean, admissions, advancement, the college s information technology office, the Department of Child and Family Studies, Public Health, and the School of Social Work. In March, Courtesy of Steve Sartori / Syracuse University the Office of Student Services was set up. The Department of Sport Management moved into parts of the third and fourth floors of MacNaughton Hall at the end of June, and the College Research Center will move in this Fall. Next comes the Food Studies and Nutrition programs, which includes reconstruction of the fifth floor for the commercial and experiential kitchens. The Nutrition Science and Dietetics Program will also have a new nutrition assessment lab, where they will examine the nutrients in food. For Sport Management, a new center on the fourth floor of MacNaughton Hall will teach the technology of sports and stadium event operations. There will also be a ticketing classroom with associated technology to learn about ticketing sales for large sports facilities. This will include a business arrangement with the Carrier Dome to allow students to be hired and assist with sales initiatives. Along with the various departments, the Falk Complex has three computer labs and a Mac lab, which is new for the college. Other renovations have included technology upgrades to many classrooms, along with new carpeting, paint and signage. We now have a showpiece, an extraordinary learning environment serving all our academic degrees. Everybody feels lifted coming in the front door, Dean Murphy said. 10 STUDENTS Senior Capstone experience Among the most valuable attributes of the Department of Sport Management is its connection with the sport industry, which impacts students in numerous ways, including the Senior Capstone experience. As a part of their degree requirements, Sport Management students must complete a 12-credit Capstone providing an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in the sports industry before graduation. Since the Capstone is the culmination of one s academic experience, the planning process begins during a student s freshman year. The process concludes with the full-semester experience with a specific sport entity typically in a location outside of Syracuse. The Capstone experience requires the student to work with a sport-related organization for a minimum of 540 hours over the course of one semester, usually the Spring of their senior year, gaining experience in areas such as sales, marketing, finance, event management, administration, communication, and law, among others. Listed below are Sport Management students and the organizations where they completed their Senior Capstone experience in We are grateful to our growing list of Capstone partners who continue to provide tremendous learning opportunities for our students. This all happens under the leadership of SPM internship placement coordinators Jaime Grillo, Jenna LaManna-Johnson, and Francesco Riverso. 12 STUDENTS Gorman immerses himself in life with NFL s Chiefs By Dan Gorman SPM 15 During the Spring 2015 semester, I had the privilege of completing my Senior Capstone with the Kansas City Chiefs Corporate Partnerships Department. There are four core values the Chiefs abide by: Honor Tradition, Inspire Our Fans, Unite Our Community, and Win With Character. Doing things the right way is what the organization is all about. My primary responsibilities focused on the business development of corporate partnerships, though I gained experience in brainstorming sessions to develop a keen understanding of the entire process. My direct responsibilities included assisting in the creation of new business leads; supporting sales managers and coordinators throughout the sales cycle, including meeting prep; researching the sports industry for sales and promotional trends and new partnership opportunities; and stadium and facility meeting set-ups. My four months with the Kansas City Chiefs enabled me to see a future in partnership strategy and business development. Learning about different industries is truly exciting, and makes every partnership unique. After the Capstone, through constant determination and strategic networking, I sought to obtain a trainee position in Sponsorship Strategy and Activation at Team Epic. I am proud to say I accepted an offer with this transformative company, and began working with Team Epic in July. I am so thankful for the opportunities presented by the Sport Management Department at Syracuse University. From the Los Angeles Immersion trip to the Olympic Odyssey adventure across Europe, and my personal and professional transformation through Sport Management Club, I have always strived to take the most from every experience. Allstate Capstone puts Wood on right career path By Alyssa Wood SPM 15 I completed my Senior Capstone with Allstate Insurance Company in Northbrook, IL, in the spring of I was given the unique experience of working for a brand through Syracuse alumnus and Sport Management advisory board member Pam Hollander, who is vice president of the integrated marketing and communications department at Allstate. I am thankful this connection gave me an opportunity to work for a company with an influential and innovative position within the sports industry. As a member of the Sport Sponsorship team, I worked primarily on Allstate s NCAA Men s Final Four sponsorship property. I traveled to the 2015 Men s Final Four in Indianapolis to see all of the projects I worked on come to life, including the on-site activations at Final Four Fan Fest, a hospitality program that hosted over 100 Allstate agents; as well as the television and online advertising efforts around the NCAA Tournament. I also worked with basketball personalities and celebrities Dick Vitale, Grant Hill, and Bill Raftery, who participated in Allstate hospitality efforts throughout the weekend. While collaborating on these projects, I gained experience working with Allstate s agency partners, including Octagon, IMG Consulting, Starcom, Leo Burnett, and Taylor Strategy. My experience with Allstate helped me to realize my passion for sponsorships and brand activations at large-scale events. The real-world experience I gained at Allstate led to a full-time job in sponsorship marketing at Team Epic. I could not be happier with my experience at Allstate and I am looking forward to continuing down this career path. SPMNews 12 Summer 2015
13 STUDENTS Capstone leads to full-time job with SU Athletics By Meghan Baumer SPM 15 During the 2015 spring semester, I completed my Senior Capstone experience with the Syracuse University Athletic Communications Department, which promotes SU s 18 varsity men s and women s sports. It is responsible for managing media relations, and producing statistics, press releases, and photos. The department also creates all content on SU s athletics website, Cuse.com. I served as the assistant media coordinator for the 2015 NCAA Men s Basketball East Regional, and the assistant editor for the 2015 Syracuse football media guide, Additionally, I worked on projects involving statistics, photos, and archival information. With Syracuse hosting the 2015 NCAA Men s East Regional, I received invaluable first-hand knowledge from my supervisor and media coordinator for the tournament, Sue Edson. Leading up to the tournament, I prepared media materials for each team and assisted in approving, assigning, and preparing media credentials. During the tournament, I managed the alltournament team selection process, coordinated media and school administration credentials, and assisted in the organizing of the seating charts for reporters and photographers. Throughout the semester, I gained exceptional experience in dealing with the media, and had numerous opportunities to showcase my written communications and design skills. I was fortunate to work with a staff that mentored me and led to many opportunities to grow and learn in the field of sports information and public relations. I am proud to say that my Senior Capstone ultimately led to a full-time job as an athletic communications assistant with the Syracuse Athletic Communications Department. SPM senior helped shape company s new brand By Austin Stevenson SPM 15 During the 2015 spring semester, I completed my Senior Capstone with the Tony & Alicia Gwynn Foundation in San Diego, CA. This charity is run by Dr. Alicia Gwynn, wife of the late Hall of Fame baseball star Tony Gwynn I was exposed to the variety of business ventures with which the Gwynn family is involved, including a beer partnership (.394 Pale Ale), Camp 19 Baseball, a series of Gwynn BBQ sauces and seasonings, and the Gwynn Gourmet Food Truck. These ventures had never been combined to cross promote each other. Identifying this opportunity led to me developing a central brand and an integrated marketing system. From this, I created Gwynndustries, Inc., as the parent company and brand through which all Gwynn-related business activities will operate. I was also proud to work on establishing the Tony Gwynn Museum. AleSmith Brewing Company, the brewery which partnered with Gwynn to create.394 Pale Ale, is expanding to a new facility. This new brewery will also serve as home of the Tony Gwynn Museum. I have been involved in every step of the process, from research and design to gathering sponsorships and building the website. The finished product will serve as a fundraising tool for the Tony & Alicia Gwynn Foundation. I would not trade my experience with the Tony & Alicia Gwynn Foundation and Gwynndustries, Inc., for any other. I am proud to have had my vision of this company come to fruition, and have the opportunity to continue working for Gwynndustries, Inc., to grow its brand and market outreach. SPMNews 13 Summer 2015

17 STUDENTS Sabermetrics Club keeps momentum going The Baseball Statistics and Sabermetrics Club, which studies advanced baseball statistics, wrapped up its third year with several projects. In March, sport management majors Greg Ackerman 15, Colby Conetta 17, and Joey Weinberg 17, along with Sport Management professor Dr. Rodney Paul, attended the 2015 Society of American Baseball Research Analytics Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, during spring break. The group was joined by SPM minor Justin Mattingly 17 and Arts and Sciences student Raymond Garzia 15. The conference included the 2015 Diamond Dollars Case Competition, which featured students from colleges and universities across the U.S. competing against each other by preparing an analysis and presentation of a baseball operations decision. The question asked was: What is the perfect Cole Hamels trade? The team came up with a few new statistics, including one called the Trade Benefit Factor that put a dollar value on each player involved in a trade and put a dollar value on the overall cost/benefit for the teams involved. During the competition, students met and networked with personnel from various Major League Baseball organizations and other baseball-centric companies. At the conference, Ackerman presented the club s research on Why Jeremy Losak 16, Matt Russo 16, Matt Filippi 15, Brandon Lane 15, and Zack Potter 15 (from left) participated in the SABR Diamond Dollars Competition at NYU in Fall Does a Team Outperform its Run Differential? More than 25 members of the SU SABR club conducted the research for the project throughout the academic year. Dr. Paul presented the paper, The Impact of Length of Game on Major League Baseball Attendance Demand, which looked at attendance over past MLB seasons and analyzed the impact of the pace of play as Major League Baseball moves forward with changes with the hope of speeding the game up. Dr. Paul, Mattingly and sport management major Jeremy Losak 16 researched the paper. NYU Diamond Dollars Competition In November 2014, Sabermetrics Club members Filippi, Losak, Brandon Lane, Zack Potter, and Matt Russo participated in a SABR Diamond Dollars Competition at New York University. This team of students, along with 10 other schools, was tasked with forecasting a free-agent contract for Major League third baseman Pablo Sandoval. Through this process, they also needed to find the cost of an open market of a win, the cost of losing a draft pick, and which two teams were most likely to sign Sandoval. The students had five days to do their research and create a presentation that would be judged by executives from the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and Baltimore Orioles. The Syracuse team attacked the case from multiple perspectives and even created its own player-aging curve to predict how Sandoval would age as a player. Although the team did not win, students learned a lot from the judges, including the current state of analytics in the game of baseball, where things might be headed in the future, and advice on how to break into the field. Join the Sabermetrics Club For more information on the Sabermetrics Club, contact the Department of Sport Management at , club president Colby Conetta at [email protected], or club advisor Dr. Rodney Paul at [email protected]. The club meets weekly during the academic year on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in Falk College Room 104. It s open to any SU student. 21 NEWS AND EVENTS Graduate students lay groundwork for bringing adaptive sport competition to Central New York Seventeen sport management graduate students in Dr. Gina Pauline s advanced sport event management course spent the spring 2015 semester, in collaboration with the Syracuse Sports Corporation, laying the foundation for the 2nd Annual Syracuse Sport Summit, which took place April 30. The students conducted research and made recommendations for the feasibility of creating a multi-sport statewide competition for athletes with physical disabilities, including wounded military veterans. The Summit s aim was to spark discussion about creating opportunities for disabled citizens through the use of adaptive sports. It also explored the areas of need for such an event as well as the benefits to community members, athletes, and adaptive sport. Julie O Neill, team leader of sport performance for the United States Olympic Committee, presented the keynote address. The event also featured remarks by Michelle Evanson, Syracuse Sports Corporation president; J. Michael Haynie, vice chancellor, Veteran & Military Affairs at Syracuse University; and George Lonergan, of Cicero, a double amputee resulting Jason Robinson (front) was honored by United States Olympic Committee members John Register, Julie O Neill, and Queenie Nichols. from a snowmobile accident. Earlier this year, he started running again with the use of prosthetic legs. The students have gained tremendous experience not only in event planning but also in adaptive sport, an area they had never been exposed to before this project. In doing so, they are learning about the sports, rules and regulations as well as necessary facilities, funding opportunities, and other aspects. The impact this project has left on each of them professionally and personally is tremendous, said Pauline, associate professor of sport management. The graduate students presented their vision for the proposed statewide competition, including an identification of the sports, facilities, and auxiliary events, as well as other essential information that needs to be gathered to move forward. John Register, associate director for community and veterans programs for U.S. Paralympics, a division of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), shared insights on how he has worked to advance the Paralympic Movement by leading programming efforts for service members and veterans with physical disabilities. The Summit featured three breakout sessions to facilitate discussion among the more than 100 attendees, who then heard from Evanson; Register; Rebecca Hann, associate vice president of operations at Onondaga Community College; and Brian McLane, strategic advisor, disabilities and inclusion at Syracuse University. 22 NEWS AND EVENTS Students immerse themselves in LA sports culture For the fifth consecutive year, the Department of Sport Management offered a course and eight-day immersion trip to Los Angeles during Spring Break 2015 that allowed 20 students to meet with more than 35 industry executives and practitioners in a variety of settings. The students were accompanied by SPM Department Director and Chair Michael Veley, and Falk College Alumni and Events Manager Kate Veley. The students met with executives from the Santa Anita Racetrack; NASCAR; National Hockey League s LA Kings; Los Angeles Dodgers; UCLA Athletics; FOX Sports; Mandalay Sports & Entertainment; LA Marathon; Relativity Sports; AEG; Los Angeles Coliseum; Stub Hub Center; USC Athletics, and Los Angeles Lakers. The group toured Hollywood, the Rose Bowl, the FOX Studios lot, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Santa Monica Pier, Paramount Studios, LA Live, Stub Hub Park, Dodger Stadium, UCLA Hall of Fame, LA Coliseum, and the LA Kings and LA Lakers practice facility (Toyota Center). They also attended a SPM hosts multimedia symposium on sports and health In the Spring 2015 semester, Falk College and its Department of Sport Management hosted Sport and the Pursuit of Healthiness, a multimedia symposium on how public health concerns are affecting sports participation and what is being done to make sports safer. In the 21st century, millions of American children still actively pursue sports, but the fear of head trauma and other debilitating injuries has affected the sports kids play. A growing number are inactive and idle. Consequently, childhood and adult obesity rates are at record levels, said Sport Management professor of practice Dennis Deninger. Through video presentations, panel discussions and a question and answer session, the event explored topics including player safety and debilitating injuries from sports, their role in reducing activity levels and long-term effects on those who are injured and current Student Seth Kornfeld 15 (far left) presenting with (from left) Sport Management professor of practice Dennis Deninger, Nicole Halloran, Dr. Brian Rieger, Denny Kellington, and on projection screen from Indianapolis, Dr. John Parsons. youth sports participation, youth activity levels and the growing inactivity/obesity epidemic, among others. Panelists included Nicole Halloran from the Solvay school district, who serves on the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Safety Committee; Denny Kellington, head athletic trainer for the Syracuse University football team; John Parsons, Ph.D., director of the NCAA Sport Science Institute; and Brian P. Rieger, Ph.D., Los Angeles Clippers game. On this trip I learned that persistence and networking are keys to finding success in the competitive sports industry, said Sport Management freshman Nicolette Hamilton. This trip opened my eyes to other parts of the industry, and the contacts I made were unreal. Once again, the group had the privilege of spending time with NBA legend Bill Walton. They had the opportunity to ask questions, take photos and hear some of the many stories that make Walton a legend in the sports industry. The conceptualization and implementation of this course has come full circle, said professor Michael Veley. This year our students actually met with four of our SPM alumni now working in Los Angeles as a result of going on this immersion trip and making professional connections. I m elated with the results and support of our benefactors. The trip accomplished the objective of meeting with as many sport entities and industry executives as feasible, including media, marketing agencies, athlete representation, professional teams, collegiate programs, sport venue facilities, etc., for the purposes of educating students and creating a greater awareness of the overall profession, while building the SU brand on the West Coast. The sport industry is absolutely massive in terms of opportunity, said SPM junior Jeremy Losak. There are so many different professional avenues that I had never considered prior to the trip. I was surprised by the number of SU alumni on the West Coast, and it just shows how massive and powerful the Syracuse alumni network is. director of Upstate Medical University s Concussion Center and assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Upstate Medical University. During the symposium, results from a survey of students and parents from 20 states and three foreign countries asking how they decide which sports to play (or not to play) were released. Nearly one-third of the students said their parents had discouraged them from playing one or more sports because of the risk of injury. Sport and the Pursuit of Healthiness was an independent study project for five undergraduate students during the Spring 2015 semester, led by Deninger. Hailey Billitier, Michael Ennis, Will Gerhard, Michael Gutman, and Seth Kornfeld began their research in the Fall of 2014 as part of the Sport in American Society course offered by Falk College. 23 NEWS AND EVENTS SPM students visit 4 countries on European Olympic Odyssey Twelve students in the Department of Sport Management, led by instructor Pat Ryan, traveled to Europe in May 2015 as part of a 19-day, four-country Olympic Odyssey trip. The program began in London, where students experienced the impact of the 2012 Summer Games. From London, they traveled to Paris, birthplace of the modern Olympic movement, and then on to Lausanne to inspect the present-day Olympic Capital, headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since The group then headed to Olympia, home of the ancient Olympics, and lastly on to Athens, site of the 2004 Summer Games. I had the experience of a lifetime, said Brendan Crowley 16. I have been showing all my friends and family the pictures and videos from the trip and they can t believe how much we covered and the beautiful places we saw in just under three weeks. It was, hands down, the best three weeks of my life and I will never forget it. In addition, students met with representatives from the Court of Arbitration for Sport to better understand how the Olympic movement is managed and its relationship to the world of sport throughout history. They also visited Marathon and the site of the historical start of the marathon run. Students spent the Spring 2015 semester learning about Olympic games past, present, and future in SPM 356-Olympic Sport Management. Ryan and his students kept a blog of the trip. Find it online at Winter Olympic Odyssey travels to Lake Placid In February, 20 undergraduate Sport Management students traveled to Lake Placid as part of their Olympic Odyssey class. The students were accompanied by SPM professors John Wolohan, Chad McEvoy, and Patrick Walsh. The group stayed overnight at the United States Olympic Training Center and hockey arena, where the 1980 miracle on ice took place. They visited the Olympic Jumping Complex, where they took an elevator to the top of the 120-meter ski-jumping tower. Students toured downtown Lake Placid, visited the 1932/1980 Winter Olympic Museum, and ended the trip at the Olympic Sports Complex, home to the bobsled, skeleton and luge tracks, and the biathlon range. After learning about the history of the Olympics during class, it was great for the students to see Lake Placid in person and to see one of the premiere winter Olympic sites in the world, Wolohan said. Guest speakers included Jared Steenberg, United States Olympic Committee operations manager, as well as Lake Placid historian and tour guide Jim Rogers. Many on the trip played basketball and volleyball in the Olympic Training Center, where Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls were staying. It was the sixth annual Winter Olympic Odyssey trip to Lake Placid for Sport Management. SPMNews 23 Summer 2015
24 NEWS AND EVENTS Steiner serves as executive in residence for SPM class Throughout the Spring 2015 semester, students in SPM 444 Sports Marketing Management had the unique opportunity to learn from Brandon Steiner, founder and chief executive officer of Steiner Sports Marketing and Memorabilia, and chairman of the SU Sport Management Advisory Board. As an Executive in Residence, Steiner co-taught the class with Sport Management assistant professor Dr. Patrick Walsh. Steiner led discussions on how to market an athlete, how to develop a Super Bowl advertisement, leadership skills needed to succeed in the sport industry, negotiation strategies, future trends in sport marketing, and best practices for securing employment. In addition, students conducted market research by developing an online survey, which was sent to Steiner Sports consumers. Students developed marketing plans for former New York Yankees and longtime Steiner Sports clients Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. Plans also focused on increasing the Steiner Sports soccer licensing and collectible business, impacting sales of the Steiner Sports Amazon.com store, and identifying how to best market toward female sports memorabilia consumers. While working on the marketing plans, students connected with Steiner Sports executives for assistance with the projects and networking opportunities. The time students were able to spend in and outside of the classroom with Mr. Steiner, and the lessons learned from someone who has revolutionized the sport memorabilia and marketing industry, was truly invaluable, Walsh said. The marketing plans the students developed exposed them to a real-world situation they may face in their future careers, and the ability to work on these projects with the CEO of a multimillion-dollar business provided a number of important lessons. Three students complete Certificate of Advanced Study program The Department of Sport Management received New York State Education approval for its newly developed Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Intercollegiate Athletics Advising and Support in The purpose of the CAS is to enhance the preparation of future and current professionals (academic and athletic advisors, higher education student affairs professionals/administrators, coaches) by providing a focused area of academic inquiry related to research, practice and policy perspectives in intercollegiate athletics and college studentathlete development. 35 ALUMNI PROFILE Meet Jeff Petrino, SPM 08, senior manager, Turner Sports Digital Meet Chrissie Cronin, SPM 10, group sales manager, Boston Celtics Meet Aneesh Saxena, SPM 10, production coordinator, ESPN At Turner Sports, I work with our salesforce to develop pitches for digital advertising within the March Madness Live streaming app, as well as NCAA.com, Bleacher Report and social media platforms for current and prospective clients. Because of Turner s commitment to content and technological innovation, the 3½ weeks of NCAA March Madness have evolved into a cultural phenomenon consumed by more than one-third of the American digital population (81.5 million people). I have also been charged with developing similar opportunities for the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup as part of Turner s partnership with the PGA of America. Before joining Turner, I spent two years in video licensing with T3Media, where I worked with a sales team that consulted with clients looking to acquire the rights to use sports video footage in commercials and programming. I enjoyed building a business, and greatly benefited from pivoting into a major growth area within sports. My career began in the event world (as a road warrior) with Octagon, where I received a crash course in the consumer passion point that is live sports. My time working in sports media and marketing has already given me many unique experiences. Witnessing Clint Dempsey s opening World Cup goal against Ghana in Brazil last summer tops the list. I am thankful that my job allows me to be involved in today s digital revolution, and helps shape how we all consume content across sports and other facets of our lives. My career with the Boston Celtics started in the Fall of 2009, when I completed my senior Capstone with my hometown organization. Growing up near Boston, my parents had season tickets and my sisters and I all took turns going to games and acting as ball girls for the team. After graduating from Syracuse University in 2010, I moved to Kansas City to live closer to my oldest sister and experience a different part of the country. After working in an administrative position for an insurance brokerage for almost two years, the Celtics approached me about a position in the group sales department as an account executive. Over each of the past three seasons, I have achieved over $1 million in group ticket sales revenue. I owe much of my success to my mentors across the Celtics organization as well as my education in the Sport Management program at Syracuse for preparing me to work in this industry. I remember projects I worked on in classes at Syracuse, and how similar they are to what I ve experienced in the real world from sales to communications to law. In November 2014 I was promoted to the newly created Group Sales Manager role, where I now oversee five members of the department. I m excited to teach the newer account executives about sales. I enjoy the relationships I ve built with clients. Groups are unique because most of the time they are only coming out for one game, so everything on that night needs to be perfect. Game nights are hectic running around the arena to meet clients, executing Fan Experience packages on the court, and resolving any issues. On a wider scale, my responsibilities as group sales manager include planning themed nights, motivating account executives to hit sales goals, executing special events, and developing new and exciting packages to sell to groups. Outside of work, I m training for my second half-marathon as a fundraiser for the Crohn s & Colitis Foundation of America. Syracuse University dual major with Newhouse and Sport Management. Capstone and first job at ESPN. Dream scenario, right? Not so much. Life in the real world was definitely an adjustment, as my career was at a crossroads only one year into my tenure at ESPN. I got in some trouble and was suspended from work for a week. After receiving my suspension, the first person I called was Laurie Orlando, senior vice president of ESPN s Talent Office. She pioneered my senior Capstone and has been a great mentor ever since. When I need life advice or guidance, I know I can count on her. I told her everything that had happened. She knew I was in trouble, but at no point did she judge me. A few months later, SPM director Michael Veley reached out to me to set up lunch because he was visiting ESPN s campus. I was hesitant. He was the reason I was at ESPN. I didn t want to let him down. When I was deciding whether to declare a dual major with Sport Management, the belief professor Veley had in me gave me the confidence to pursue it and my dreams of working at ESPN. How could I tell him I was suspended from work and almost got fired? At the lunch, I told him everything. He said, Aneesh, I still believe in you. At that point, I knew I had to make things right and fight to keep my place at ESPN. Three years after my suspension, I was promoted to production coordinator, managing the logistical aspect of production for Major League Soccer, U.S. Soccer, and UEFA Tournaments. The promotion was special because I feel like I learned from my mistakes, moved past them, and became a better professional. I have tried to fix the things I can control. What keeps me going is the belief and confidence my mentors like Laurie Orlando and professor Veley have in me. SPMNews 35 Summer 2015
36 ALUMNI PROFILE Meet Max Levitt, SPM 11, executive director, Leveling the Playing Field Meet Danielle Czysz, SPM 12, marketing associate, DraftKings, Inc. Meet Charma Harris, SPM 13, tournament services coordinator, PGA s Cadillac Championship Three years ago I founded a nonprofit called Leveling the Playing Field, whose mission is to improve the opportunity for low-income families to get involved in youth sports through the donation of used/excess sporting equipment. After spending three seasons as an equipment manager with the Syracuse University football program, I was bothered by the volume of equipment given to athletic programs for free, and in turn the waste of sporting equipment, not just on the college level, but on the recreation level as well. Aware of the decline in youth sports and the role equipment costs play in that trend, I decided to pursue a career based around reversing this trend. Every day, I communicate with various sources of donated sporting equipment from collegiate athletic departments, youth sports leagues, and families. I continuously work within the community to expose our equipment program within undeserved communities to drive demand for donations. Every week we donate thousands of dollars worth of equipment to Title I Schools, Recreation Centers, youth/after-school programs, and neighborhood sports teams. Through funding from local foundations, and businesses, including the Washington Nationals, USTA, US Soccer Foundation and numerous other sports organizations, we will have donated more than $1 million worth of product by the end of In three years, we have gone from operating out of my parents basement, to a vacant dance studio, to now outgrowing our 4,000-squarefoot warehouse. Currently a nonprofit in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area, we are expecting to begin opening multiple locations across the county by the end of My experience in the Sport Management Department taught me the value of networking. As a result, I have been able to build a strong network which has helped Leveling the Playing Field continue to grow at this pace. It will no doubt be that continuously growing network that will allow us to become a nationwide organization that we hope will shake up the manufacturing and youth sports industries. I began working in the online acquisition and digital marketing/media department in the New York City office of DraftKings, Inc., in March DraftKings is an industry leader in the Daily Fantasy Sports sector in both the United States and Canada. My job is divided into two main categories: affiliate marketing and creative asset management. This includes working with the digital affiliate partners on a daily basis to promote DraftKings and its contests, as well as managing the creative assets, or banners, for large digital advertising partners. My career in the sports industry began in the Fall of 2012 when I completed my Senior Capstone at the YES (Yankees Entertainment and Sports) Network in the communications/ public relations department. I then spent six months at Team Epic in Norwalk, CT, as a trainee in the corporate event and meeting planning department. I worked with clients such as FedEx, Charles Schwab, and AT&T, while also attending the 2013 NCAA Men s Final Four and the 2013 NFL Draft. I also worked as a marketing assistant at the Breeders Cup World Championships, assisting with events and digital marketing, as well as being the lead on various corporate and marketing partnerships. I helped to execute both the 2013 and 2014 Breeders Cups at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA. Completing my Capstone at the YES Network was a game-changer for me. I was given such immense responsibility as a college student, which prepared me for what the future holds. To this day, the vice president of communications at YES is still my go-to for advice and mentorship regarding my career. If not for the Capstone opportunity and the networking skills taught in the SPM classes, I don t know if I would be where I am today. After graduating from Syracuse University in 2013, I ve spent two years working for the PGA Tour as the tournament services coordinator for the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship in Doral, FL. I was offered the position after I completed my Senior Capstone with the Tournament and began working full-time right after graduation. Initially, I was not interested in working in the golf industry, but after going on the SPM in LA Immersion trip and getting a behind-thescenes experience at a PGA Tour event, I found that golf could offer a lot of development for an aspiring Sport Management professional. In the last two years, I ve had the opportunity to work with some of the best professionals and sponsors in golf. While at the Cadillac Championship, I ve overseen the coordination of the volunteer program, the social and digital media channel, and internship programs for the tournament. I was also a part of one of the first executions of after-hour events at a PGA Tour tournament. I ve had an amazing experience at the PGA Tour and have truly enjoyed working in professional golf. I encourage current students to think outside of the box when considering a specific career in sports. You never know where you may end up and how much fun you might have. Support Sport Management We continually strive to offer a variety of opportunities to support our Sport Management students. From scholarships and financial assistance to immersion programs and experiential field trips, along with inviting distinguished guest lectures to campus and hosting relevant symposiums, Falk College s sport management education goes beyond the textbooks and the walls of our classrooms. David Salanger, Falk College assistant dean, advancement and external affairs, welcomes the opportunity to talk and/or meet with you to discuss program support and student learning opportunities.
