Cloud Appliance For Enterprise Dr. George Wang, EVP Institute for Information Industry Taipei, Taiwan 2011.10.28

Cloud Computing A Major Paradigm Shift for IT Source: IBM 2

Cloud Computing - IT as a Service Cloud Computing is a computing and business model of shared network-delivered services: - Massive infrastructure - Scalability - Elasticity - Delivered as a Utility 3

Disruptive Innovation Major elements of Disruptive Innovation Lower gross margins Smaller target markets Simpler products and services Clayton M. Christensen Technology Performance Cloud Technology is Sustaining Innovation Cloud technologies improve functionality and performance to satisfy same targeted market Cloud technology IS NOT disruptive innovation, but a sustaining one Commodity Server Mainframe Commodity Server + Virtualization Time Source:ITRI IEK Service Performance Incumbent Software Cloud Service Time Cloud Service is Disruptive Innovation Cloud services adopt pay-as-you-go licensing model Cloud services target non-mainstream, smaller segment customers Cloud service users require not professional IT knowledge 4

The Cloud People vs. the Incumbent (Public Cloud) Google.com Amazon.com Microsoft Apple Larry Page Jeff Bezos Steve Ballmer Steve Jobs (Private Cloud) VMware IBM HP Source: 2011.5 Business Week Paul Maritiz Sam Palmisano Leo Apotheker 5

Taiwan Cloud Strength & Opportunities Strength A. World No. 1 ICT Hardware manufacturing capabilities Opportunities Opportunity 1 : To develop cloud solutions and services integrating with leadership clients (Device and Service) B. Leading broadband infrastructure deployment and ICT applications in Asia Pacific region Opportunity 2: To develop cloud systems for enterprises And data centers Opportunity 3: To develop devices for the Cloud (Service Oriented Devices) Source:Cloud Computing Promotion Office, MOEA 7

Container Computers (Inventec, Wistron etc) for the Green Data Center Significantly lower energy cost; Speed up deployment PUE(Power Usage Effectiveness) lowered from 2.0~2.5 to 1.2~1.3 8

Devices to Support Cloud Services Old World : PC is King Brave New World : Cloud is King King Cloud takes up his place - Good old times for PC was in the past. Will PCs disappear in the future? No, but not good. Service is King - Cloud is the next brave new world What will the new generation of devices be? SOD (Service Oriented Device) to support Cloud Computing 9

Service Oriented Devices (for Cloud) App service / Data / Status synchronized from the cloud. Offline operations still important. Device may not be thin, but need to be smart enough. Computing power will still need to be powerful, but not a driving force. Flash storage will be main stream, but need not too large. Always on (power on & online) Battery life is key - 8 working hours at least. 10

Enterprise Concerns on Public Cloud network disconnect security privacy service outage 11

III Vision CAFE Cloud Appliance For Enterprise Partner with major hardware/software vendors to develop Cloud Appliance for Enterprise (2-30 nodes) - for private cloud or hosted private cloud. Key components include Kernel environment, cloud file system, virtual desktop, cloud security guard to support CPU cloud, storage cloud, application cloud etc. Bundle with key applications as application cloud appliances. Work with ISVs to develop domain specific cloud platforms such as education, SMB etc.

CAFÉ (Cloud Appliance for Enterprise)- CAKE (Cloud Appliance Kernel Environment) Hypervisor (KVM) supports multiple virtual machines Can run different operating systems and application environments Rapid startup/shutdown of virtual machine (provisioning) Network and storage also virtualized Tune virtual machine share of physical resources (load balancing) 1: Light weight: 1 processor, 2GB memory, 2GB disk space are sufficient to start Control node 2: Significantly lower infrastructure cost 13

CAFÉ (Cloud Appliance for Enterprise)- PC² (Personal Cloud Computer) 2. Integrating with CAKE for application resource management/scalability Installed as pre-configured when appliance is purchased or upgraded Users NOT associated with a particular virtual machine Users can run applications on different OS / application platforms. 1. Do not provide dedicated VM for a single user resource savings Desktop and integration provided by PC2 virtualization environment Application Management Session control and management File System Access Web Applications 14

CAFÉ (Cloud Appliance for Enterprise)- COSA (Cloud Object Storage Appliance) 1. Keep sensitive data within the enterprise 2. An A4 size box can provide 9TB of data (with RAID) Single user sharing between devices Locations Office, home, travel Devices Workstations, laptops, cell phone, tablet etc. Personal convenience Groups of users collaborating Business groups, school classes, Productivity PROMISE VTrak Ex30 RAID PROMISE NS6700 15

CAFÉ Adding Applications Key Features Integrate third party applications with enterprise environment Seamless user access to domain specific applications Managed enterprise data CAFÉ + Third Party Applications Opportunities Domain Specific applications Education, Government, Health etc. ERP, CRM, Business Integration (BI), etc. Partners: Application Solution, System Integration and Online Service Providers, Server Resellers Client Devices CAFÉ Appliance Thin-client hardware Various architecture CAFÉ SSO Appliance Module Application Single Sign-On Federated Identity Optional local enterprise directory PC2 Appliance Module Desktop Virtualization Cloud Application Integration COSA Appliance Module Object Storage Document Management Collaboration Third Party Application Hypervisor / Provisioning (CAKE) 16

CAFÉ Summary Develop key Cloud system software (VM management, storage, application management, security etc). Help Taiwan hardware manufactures to transform into key WW cloud system vendors for enterprises Partner with major software vendors to develop leading Cloud application appliances and domain specific Cloud platforms Application Appliance ( 企 業 雲 端 應 用 伺 服 器 產 品 ) domain-specific application & service Cloud Appliance ( 企 業 雲 端 伺 服 器 產 品 ) scalable virtual machine/storage/desktop/security PC Server (PC 主 機 產 品 ) non-scalable physical machine 17
