SAN JACINTO COLLEGE JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: DEPARTMENT: Director, Educational Planning & Counseling Student Development SECURITY SENSITIVE: Yes FLSA STATUS: Exempt SALARY GRADE: 29 FUNCTION: The function of the Director of Educational Planning & Counseling is to supervise, coordinate, and direct all educational planning, advising, counseling, career counseling, international student programs, student success initiatives, recruiting & retention activities as well as disability service programs on the campus. REPORTS TO: Deans of Student Development SUPERVISES: Educational Planners, Recruiters/Educational Planners, all Counselors (including the International Student Counselor, Shared Counselors, and Disability Services Counselor), Part-Time Educational Planning Staff as well as the Administrative Assistants for Educational Planning & Counseling. MAJOR REPONSIBILITIES: Essential Job Functions: Responsible for supervising, coordinating, and directing all educational planning, personal counseling, crisis intervention, career counseling, international student programs, shared program initiatives, student success initiatives, recruitment activities, retention activities, and disability services programs on the campus. Primary leader to assure that educational planning/counseling services are leading edge and adhere to the highest standards of quality. The Director of Educational Planning and Counseling will meet with their campus Dean of Student Development & Student Development Team as well as the Directors of Educational Planning and Counseling on the other campuses as required. Ensure consistent uniform application of all functions, processes, and services within educational planning and counseling areas on the campus and at our area high schools.

Works with the Dean of Student Development to determine campus needs and implements services. Conduct performance management evaluations of full-time staff. Conform to relevant federal, state/provincial, and local statutes which govern the delivery of counseling and psychological services. Ensure that confidentiality and privacy is maintained with respect to all communications and records considered confidential unless exempted by law as well as conform to the highest ethical level of state/international licensing board requirements. Provide educational planning, career & short-term therapeutic counseling, crisis intervention, registration assistance, as well as assistance in accessing and navigating institutional requirements with the goal to develop the whole student, academically, socially, and emotionally. Manage the assigned campus budgets within Educational Planning & Counseling (Educational Planning & Counseling & Disability Services) to ensure operational costs are in line with relevant budgetary controls and available dollars are effectively utilized. Marginal Job Functions: Assists with the management of the educational planning and counseling budgets, approve payroll, maintain office schedules, and maintain monthly and annual reports.. Assists with the management of any grants or grant funding as required. Works with the Dean and Vice President of Student Services to plan, implement and evaluate the programs and services of the campus. Submit monthly and annual written reports to the Dean of Student Development. As part of the annual report, include professional improvement and growth activities. Works closely with the Director of Recruiting Initiatives to coordinate the efforts of the Recruiter/Educational Planners as they engage in outreach and community activities, fairs, forums, and other recruitment events. Represent SJC, as required, by participating in state and local councils, committees, boards, organizations, and state and national conferences. Maintain a personal and professional commitment to the college values and the success of SJC and its students. Recommend strategies to meet the needs of a diverse community and student body. Establish and maintain relationships with outside educational institutions, internal departments and community agencies. Serve as department liaison and on campus/college committees as requested. Monitor retention interventions that address the characteristics and needs of a diverse population.

Maintain knowledge of university transfer requirements, reverse transfers, and articulations agreements. Be knowledgeable of and responsive to FERPA law and regulations. Manage the delivery of individual and group counseling services, career testing, and exploration as well as student development, study, life, and inter/intra personal skills workshops (as needed). Manage the delivery of crisis intervention and emergency coverage as well as refer students to outside community mental health resources and other community agencies. Monitor Educational Planning & Counseling s web presence to include the college website content and use of social media. Assess programs by data comparisons and evaluation. Ensure regular evaluation of assigned staff and make appropriate recommendations in accordance with College policies and procedures. Facilitate timely, professional communication and problem resolution strategies with student development employees. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1. Must be team-oriented with the ability to work well with other staff and faculty members in the development and administration of programs within Student Development and throughout the college. 2. Excellent oral & written communication, interpersonal, organizational and presentation skills as well as possess personal computer literacy. 3. Ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously as well as develop new projects and programs with little supervision. 4. Ability to safeguard sensitive and/or confidential information from intentional or unintentional disclosure. 5. Ability to meet deadlines for assigned reports and projects. 6. Ability to interview, select, train, supervise, and evaluate a diverse population of personnel. 7. Ability to provide feedback, support, and encouragement to staff members. 8. Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position. Education and Experience: Education: Master's degree in Counseling or related discipline from a regionally accredited college/university required. Experience: 5 or more years of experience providing various modes of educational planning & counseling in a community college system. Experience in educational planning and academic advising, career/educational, individual, group & short-term counseling, crisis

intervention, minority concerns, learning styles/study skills, retention, and recruiting activities. Knowledge and experience with administering and evaluating collegelevel assessments, including computerized tests. Experience with creating and fostering retention and recruiting initiatives. Budget management experience is preferred. 2 or more years of supervisory experience is preferred. Knowledge and experience with Banner Student Systems or other student database software systems preferred. Licenses/Certifications: 1. Licensed Professional Counselor (L.P.C.) and/or National Certified Counselor (N.C.C.) preferred. 2. Any license(s) and Certification(s) must meet the State of Texas guidelines and regulations for counseling practices, regardless of exempt status of educational entity.
