2011 Report to the Community 2011 was a year of growth for HealthONE as we enhanced and expanded healthcare services across our 10-state region. We invested in new technologies, quality care programs and facilities in the metro Denver area to better serve our patients. And, as one of the state s largest private employers, HealthONE was steadfast in its commitment to improving the health of our 9,000 employees. In August, we added a new program to encourage and reward those who improve their health and maintain healthier lifestyles. Among the most pressing issues in healthcare is the lack of specialists in rural areas, which forces patients to travel long distances for medical care. HealthONE Stroke Care grew our telemedicine network to 25 sites in Colorado and Wyoming in 2011. Telemedicine in rural and suburban hospital ERs enable patients to have immediate access via cameras and computers to a stroke neurologist, who can remotely diagnose a stroke with the local ER physician and begin treatment quickly. Not only are stroke patients often able to stay at their local hospital close to home but faster diagnosis and treatment improves recovery. HealthONE plans to double the number of telemedicine cameras across the region in 2012 as well as the types of specialists who will be available to rural areas, including physicians board-certified in pediatrics, cardiology, behavioral health and other specialties. In the metro area, HealthONE invested more than $110 million in facility improvements and new medical equipment. We began construction on a new freestanding Northeast ER at 128th St. and Holly (opening May 2012); we opened the new Breast Care at Red Rocks and the Red Rocks Cancer Center; operating room expansions were completed at North Suburban, Rose and Swedish Medical Centers; a new AirLife helicopter hangar opened at Sky Ridge Medical Center; an enhanced Bone Marrow Transplant unit at Presbyterian/St. Luke s Medical Center and an expanded Pediatric Intensive Care Unit opened at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/ SL. Additionally, HealthONE opened Red Rocks Surgery Center in Lakewood and added Ridgeview Endoscopy Center in Lone Tree to our System of Excellence. We hosted the first Rocky Mountain Regional Health Summit, a day of continuing education for rural physicians, nurses and hospital administrators. The Summit will be an annual event. To better serve physicians and patients across our multi-state region, we opened Access HealthONE a high-tech access and transfer center. Now with a single call, physicians can request a patient transfer or a medical consult with a specialist. Across the company, our employees and staff continued to show their commitment to our communities day-in and day-out, providing the highest quality, safe care to our patients and their families, and contributing to local organizations. Together our physicians, nurses and clinicians provided more than $103.7 million in costs for free 4 2011 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

HealthONE Board of GOVERNORS or discounted medical care to patients; we paid $75.6 million in state and local sales and property taxes and FICA; and we donated nearly $2 million to local nonprofit organizations supporting children, health programs, the arts, and other worthy causes. Additionally, HealthONE hospitals and facilities also spent or contributed $4 million for community health improvement services (such as in-kind donations of medicine, supplies and volunteers; free health seminars and education; nurse triage telephone service; car seat and bike helmet checks; and other free or below-cost programs). We invested more than $8.8 million in health professionals education and another $1.8 million toward research. Finally, we contributed almost $2.3 million in staff time and contributions for community building activities beyond our campuses. All told, 2011 saw the people of HealthONE contribute nearly $198 million in community benefit, up $8 million from 2010. Excellent Specialty Care is Our Trademark Key Service Lines More than 800,000 patients a year entrust their care to the 9,000 employees and more than 3,000 affiliated physicians at HCA-HealthONE LLC hospitals and outpatient centers. Our healthcare professionals are second to none. Their priority is to ensure consistent, high-quality patient care across our system. HealthONE s extensive network was developed to provide more convenient access to the vast range of services and experts that our communities need for screening, diagnosis, treatments, surgery, rehabilitation, and ongoing health and wellness needs. ER/Trauma HealthONE has eight full-service Emergency Departments, 6 at our hospitals and 2 free-standing ERs. A third free-standing ER North Suburban Northeast ER opens spring 2012 in north Thornton. Our system includes a Level 1 Trauma Center (adult and pediatric) at Swedish Medical Center; Level II Trauma Center at The Medical Center of Aurora; and Level III Trauma Center at Sky Ridge Medical Center and North Suburban Medical Center. AirLife Denver is our critical air and ground medical transport program serving facilities in a 10-state region. HealthONE s The Medical Center of Aurora demonstrated leadership in cardiovascular care by developing Cardiac Alert SM with physicians and EMS partners in 2001. Local EMS now have advanced equipment and training to identify heart attack patients in the field and alert hospitals of their arrival so staff and physicians are ready to treat these patients as soon as they arrive. Quick response times and 24/7 cardiac surgery backup help us save lives. HealthONE hospitals perform 1 in 5 of all cardiovascular surgeries in the state. HealthONE Heart Care network also includes accredited Chest Pain Centers; some of the busiest catheterization laboratories in Colorado; the area s most advanced electro-physiology programs and technologies; and a range of progressive therapies such as Aquapheresis, a safe and effective treatment that improves a Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) patient s quality of life. Surgeons at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children Pediatric Heart Institute at P/SL perform more than 100 surgeries a year to treat our youngest patients with congenital and other heart defects. Swedish Medical Center and The Medical Center of Aurora have advanced centers for neurosciences. Patients throughout the region seek the neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuro trauma specialists at both institutions for care ranging from Chiari malformations to critical head traumas, movement disorders, aneurysms and stroke, MS, epilepsy, head and neck tumors and spinal cord injuries. Additionally, HealthONE s Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital the first licensed rehab hospital in our state offers comprehensive brain injury and stroke rehabilitation with more certified staff than any other Colorado facility. Our renown stroke network lead by Swedish Medical Center is the most experienced and extensive in the Rocky Mountain Region. Swedish treats nearly three times more stroke patients than any other hospital in the state. Stroke neurologists provide immediate care to patients in remote locations through a network of more than 25 telemedicine cameras across Colorado and in Wyoming. HealthONE Stroke Care is the only network offering interventional neuroradiology with three INR physicians and comprehensive services. We also have 5 neurohospitalists, 4 neurovascular neurosurgeons, the first Stroke Certified Air Transport Teams as part of AirLife Denver; and two The Joint Commission-accredited Primary Stroke Centers at Swedish (in 2011 received 4th consecutive certification) and The Medical Center of Aurora. All this adds up to faster, better care and improved patient outcomes. HealthONE provides every female patient with individualized care to meet all her childbearing to post-menopausal needs. More expectant moms trust HealthONE for superior prenatal, labor and delivery care. Our highly experienced OB staffs, nurse midwives and Doula services set us apart delivering more than 13,000 babies each year accounting for 34% of all babies born in the metro area. Our hospitals were first in the metro area with OB Airstrip, allowing doctors to monitor fetal and maternal conditions on their handheld mobile devices during the hours prior to delivery. Additionally, HealthONE offers world-renowned 6 2011 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

fertility experts on our campuses, 24/7 high-risk perinatologists, the most-experienced high-risk OB physicians and high-risk OB transport team across the eight-state region, and the highest level NICUs available that aim to keep new moms close to their babies. HealthONE Women s Care also is a leader in robotic, minimally invasive gynecologic procedures and offers the full continuum of care for women of all ages. This includes advanced breast care, including all-digital breast centers for screening, diagnostic mammography and ultrasound, stereotactic and ultrasound guided biopsy as well as minimally invasive treatments and technologies. Our Breast Cancer Survival rates surpass state and national averages for all stages of cancer and years of survival. HealthONE cares for more cancer patients than any other system or hospital in Colorado. Our Cancer Care network incorporates state-of-the-art imaging and treatment technologies. Our specialists, researchers and surgeons are regional leaders in treatment of cancers of: GI/digestive tract; respiratory system; lymphatic system; brain and nerves; blood (leukemias); male and female reproductive systems; bones; kidney and urinary tract; liver; breast; multiple myeloma; pancreas; endocrine system; and skin. We care for the most patients needing bone marrow transplants, breast and gynecologic, prostate and lung cancer treatments in metro Denver. Our patientcentered approach uses teams of patient navigators, physicians, surgeons, nurses, social workers, therapists and others to work with each patient on an individualized treatment plan. With four nationally designated Centers of Excellence in Weight Loss Surgery, HealthONE is a regional leader in Bariatric Care treating more than 46% of all Metro Denver patients and 30% of Colorado patients seeking help reducing weight and the serious lifethreatening conditions caused by morbid obesity. Our regionally and nationally recognized surgeons work with patients for many months before and after surgery to ensure safety and improve patient outcomes. HealthONE established a wide network of outpatient imaging centers across the metro area to improve access and ease of scheduling for patients, and ensure quick, high-quality digital images to physicians no matter which HealthONE center the patient chooses. Most important, HealthONE board-certified and fellowship-trained radiologists with expertise in a variety of disciplines analyze the tests, offering each patient s physician more accurate readings. Orthopedic and Spine Care Specialists at HealthONE exceed national standards on quality and outcomes for patients who have full- or partial-joint replacements or back surgeries. Minimally invasive techniques and advanced technologies help patients recover more quickly than traditional surgeries. Our dedicated teams have years of experience in helping patients seeking bone, joint and spine care in fact, Sky Ridge performs nearly twice the number of spine surgeries than any other hospital in the state. 2011 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 7

10 2011 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY North Suburban Medical Center

The year 2011 was marked by many achievements, all aimed at continuing North Suburban s commitment to providing community-driven medical services to the residents of north Denver s neighborhoods and communities. On the heels of its 25th Anniversary, the campus grew 21,000 square feet to accommodate its surgical services expansion project, which added two new, major operating rooms and private, preoperative and post-operative care units. Through the acquisition of the newest in da Vinci robotic technology, North Suburban was the first hospital to offer the most advanced in minimally invasive surgery options to residents in its surrounding communities. To allow for increased capacity and patient access to critical care services an absolute necessity, when looking at Thornton s growth projections, North Suburban made immense progress on year-long construction at its Northeast ER (a free-standing emergency department) located further up the I-25 corridor and projected to open in May 2012. The main ER on campus underwent a $1 million renovation while concurrently earning chest pain accreditation and Level III trauma designation. Awarded City of Thornton s Best Business Citizen and one of the nation s top performers on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, North Suburban has a healthy dose of high-quality programs and services to help make it possible for people to live longer, healthier lives.
