As a well-known scientific representative of the large-scale facilities user community, in 2007 she was appointed by the Italian Ministry of Research as Italian Delegate at the Programme Committee Research Infrastructures of the Framework Programme 7 th of the European Commission. In recent years, she assumed managerial and political responsibilities in science, focusing upon large-scale central facilities for materials research, promoting the preparation of the first Italian Roadmap of Research Infrastructures of pan-european interest, and advising on the financial schemes to be supported by the Italian Government to ensure the participation of the Italian scientific communities to international research infrastructures. She is a member of several scientific advisory and governing bodies at international level, both as a scientific expert and as a representative of the Italian Ministry of Research. She has been a member of the SAC of the ESRF in the period 2006-2011, as well as of the ESFRI expert group on the perspectives of large-scale facilities for condensed matter physics in Europe since 2005. Management and leadership experience Her responsibilities as the Director of the Physics Department of the University of Perugia (2009 2013) included administration, personnel, budget, implementing the science programme of the Department and promoting the research strategy. This implies fund-rising activities for projects from the public and private sector, both at national and international level. The Department is strongly and successfully involved in international research projects and collaborations in the fields of particle and nuclear physics (CERN), astro-particles and astrophysics (ESA, ESO, NASA), and research in condensed matter physics carried out at the major synchrotron and neutron facilities (ILL, ESRF, EMBL). In-house research is carried out at the laboratories and installations inside the Department. Under the recent evaluation exercise carried out by the Italian National Authority for the Evaluation ANVUR, the research activity at the Physics Department was ranked at the 6 th position in the list of the comparable-size Italian universities and it got a remarkable 1 st position in the list of all the Italian universities according to the statistical analysis of performances by CENSIS - Centro Studi Investimenti Sociali. Following the major structural reorganization of the Italian University system, the Department of Physics and the Department of Earth Science merged into the new Department of Physics and Earth Science, with doubled personnel and budget, a synergetic network of in-house laboratories and optimized services. Within the mandate of the new Department is also the organization of the (3+2)-years degree courses (Physics; Earth Science; Hydrocarbons) and the higher education programme of the PhD courses. The Department also takes care of organizing lectures, examinations, and training in basic Physics courses to more than 1500 students of the University of Perugia. As the Director of the Department, she is a member of the University Senate. As National Coordinator and leader of the Neutron Committee of the INFM (2002 2005), a 3-member policy-advising body, she was responsible for setting up the scientific strategy of the INFM in the neutron field, which included coordination and funding of research projects for design and construction of neutron spectrometers and ancillary equipment, management of the Italian participation in the neutron sources of the Institut Laue-Langevin (Grenoble, FR) and the Laboratoire Leon Brillouin (Saclay, FR), organization of support initiatives to the neutron users community, dissemination, outreach and training initiatives. Research interests Her research activity was initially developed in the field of solid state physics, with special focus on ground state electronic and magnetic properties of transition metals and alloys investigated by means of polarized neutron diffraction in single crystal samples. This is a very powerful technique enabling to obtain the spin density distribution and, in ordered magnetic systems, the atomic magnetic moments and the occupation numbers of the outer electron states. These experimental data are one of the rare benchmarks for the validity of the Density Functional approach, within local density and local spin density approximations, to the calculations of the ground state of an electron system. The results of this activity have been published in several articles and a review for a wide audience was published in Neutron News in 2000 (Ref. 71 Forty years of polarized neutron scattering in ferromagnetic 3d metals and alloys ). Aiming at the experimental measurement of quantum observables related to the dynamic many-electron interactions, a series of x-ray elastic scattering experiments was carried out on crystalline samples of alkali metals and simple metals to obtain the spin-dependent pair correlation functions of the electron system. The experimental technique, the results and the theoretical interpretation of these data, which we published in several scientific papers, are also described and reported by Winfried Schülke in his reference book Electron Dynamics by Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (Oxford University Press, USA, 2007, Cap. 2.7, p. 164). The interest in the description of the interacting electron gas was the driver behind the studies on the collective excitations in simple metals in liquid phase. Indeed, liquid alkali metals have been considered as the prototype of a simple liquid metal, that is, a system with a free electron-like band structure in the crystalline state, which can be regarded as a two-component mixture of interacting electrons and ions. The investigation of a sample like that enables one to address the fundamental field of static and dynamic screening phenomena in the interacting electron gas. In particular, the presence of propagating collective excitations, i.e., propagating ion density fluctuations, can be related to the screened (almost static) Coulomb interactions among the ions. A series of experiments based upon inelastic neutron scattering over a kinematic region paralleling the Brillouin scattering regime, was carried out in molten alkali metals and alloys and polyvalent liquid metals to understand the microscopic mechanisms responsible for the propagation of the vibrational collective excitations, which brings information on either the dielectric screening in the electron gas or the effective interatomic potential in the system. More recently, the interest in the study of vibrational dynamics of disordered systems at THz frequencies has evolved into the investigation of the excitation modes in complex and/or low-dimensional systems of potential interest in life science research, with a focus on the study of dynamic and networking properties of hydration water of proteins and water confined in living cells or inside polymeric membranes. Indeed, the peculiar properties of water interacting with macromolecules have a deep impact on the specific protein functionality and, generally speaking, on most of the biological activities in living organisms. These research activities have been carried out under international collaborations and have mostly made use of scattering techniques using both neutrons and x-rays available at the large scale facilities in Europe. A deep knowledge of the neutron scattering techniques, achieved also working at the TRIGA Reactor (ENEA-CRE Casaccia) in Rome at the beginning of her career, drove her to work on the design and development of neutron instrumentation, namely
spectrometer components such as monochromators, collimators and detectors, and neutron spectrometers that are now installed at the major European neutron sources (PRISMA@ISIS, neutron monochromator of IN4C@ILL, BRISP@ILL). The activity of instrument development has been carried out within international collaborations and has been supported by both national and European funding. In the nineties, the pioneering work on solid state detectors, based on Silicon diodes and microstrips coupled to a neutron converter to achieve high speed and high resolution performances, was carried out under one of the first European programmes to finance networks of excellence. The searching for novel neutron detector concepts has continued along the years and it is nowadays an important issue considering the recent 3 He, the typical filling gas of a neutron detector, shortage at global level. The results of her research have been presented in about 150 publications in international journals with peer review, several institutional reports and invited communications to international conferences. Acknowledgement of the scientific results achieved in the field is also witnessed by the invited contributions to the Scientific Highlights of the ILL-facility. Academic activities Since 1991, as a staff member of the University of Perugia and the Politecnico di Milano, she has been regularly teaching courses of Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism to student classes of Engineering, Biotechnology and Earth Sciences, and courses of Spectroscopy, Solid State Physics and Many-body Physics to student classes of Physics. Her typical Professoral duty consisted in giving two courses per academic year, over the two semesters. She also has given lectures and advanced courses to PhD students and to students of specialized Schools, mostly on the use of neutron techniques. She has been the supervisor of many student theses, both graduate and PhD. She has been a member of the PhD School of Physics of both Perugia University and Politecnico di Milano. Most of the students who graduated or got a PhD under her supervision are now employed in European research institutions and Universities.
