Avinashilingam Chettiar under the auspices of the Avinashilingam Education Trust in 1957 with 45 women students. This institute is the dream-child of Dr. T.S. Avinashilingam, illustrious educationist and veteran freedom fighter from the city of Tirupur in Tamilnadu. Ayya (Father), as he was reverentially addressed, served both as a Member of Parliament and as the First Minister of Education in the Composite Madras Presidency (now Tamilnadu) after Independence. This eminent Gandhian envisaged an institute of higher education to uplift and empower women, especially those belonging to the deprived sections of the society and to prepare them for meaningful service to their homes, community and the nation. Dr. Rajammal P. Devadas, a world renowned nutritionist, who s every breath had been expended in research and higher education played an imperative role through contribution to welfare programmes, community rehabilitation and research. The outstanding contributions made by Dr. Devadas to nutrition which is of regional and global significance won her the prestigious International Nutrition Award of 2001 from the International Union of Nutritional Sciences. Besides these awards, Dr. Devadas s eminence had been recognized by the Conferment of Honorary Degrees by various National and International Universities. The saga of excellence and legacy created by the visionaries have been carefully nurtured and carried forward by the team of devoted functionaries. Presently, Dr. T.S.K. Meenakshisundaram is the Chancellor and Dr. Sheela Ramachandran is the Vice Chancellor, who are carrying forward the transformative vision to place the university at the zenith. 3

It is now the largest Institution in the country to impart quality education for women at all levels. The University follows the educational ideals of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Saradamani Devi, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi and upholds a life of purity, discipline and service. From time immemorial, the University s activities have demonstrated Academic Excellence Vitality of Culture and Values Social Relevance The institute s educational process is to produce respectful, peaceful, honest and responsible people, through an ethos, a culture, an environment within the institute, in which respect, peace, honesty and responsibility are the hallmarks of how the university organises itself into. The University focuses on empowering women, particularly the underprivileged, student youth, non-student youth and non-student women, community and societal development, especially the rural people, the tribes etc. The University has a student population of 6111 students hailing from different parts of the country. Nearly 60 per cent of the students being first generation learners and from rural segment portrays the commitment of the institution in developing better citizens for the nation. Dynamic Curriculum ICT being the focus of higher education, the course contents are framed to facilitate the same. Computer Applications is being offered as a mandatory ancillary paper since 1996. Under CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) pattern all undergraduates undergo compulsory experiential learning to earn the required credits. Communication Skill, Soft Skill and Life Skills are compulsory for all students. Add on courses and certificate courses are an added attraction. To ensure all round development of the students, 46 value added courses are offered under the UG programmes. All courses have some in-built components on women s issues in the curriculum. NSS (National Service Scheme) / NCC (National Cadet Corps) and CSS (Community and Social Service), being the mandatory extra-curricular components for all students at the UG and PG levels respectively, create social awareness and sensitize them to participate in Nation building activities. The University offers innovative programmes such as Bio-textiles, Biotechnology, Biomedical Instrumentation, VLSI Design, Medical Electronics, Emergency and Trauma Care Management, Physician Assistant, Tourism and the like which are reflective of the global trends incorporated in the curriculum. Faculty The faculty act as facilitators in the knowledge-enhancing process and the impact is that the students have come up with path-breaking abilities that have won them accolades along with an entrepreneurship mindset. The faculty strives to increase global competencies and expand learning beyond the walls of physical classrooms. Students are trained to explore, think, innovate and redefine conventional knowledge. Research The University promotes research collaborations with national and international agencies. Currently there are 4 international and 19 national level collaborations signed for research and development activities with funds from agencies like UGC, AICTE, DST, DBT, DRDO, SAP, FIST, CSO, TNSCST, ICMR, Heinz India and NGOs. 7

Student Support and Progression The Women s Studies Centre, Gandhian Studies Centre, Dr. Ambedkar Studies Centre and Equal Opportunity Cell provide opportunities for the students in enhancing their co-curricular and extracurricular activities. All the faculty members participate in the academic and personal mentoring of the students. The placement cell, EDP Cell and tie-up with National Entrepreneurship Network promote the employability of the students. The alumni association helps to develop industrial linkages. Feedbacks are obtained from the students, faculty and employers and are used to make suitable changes in various areas of campus life. Awards, Recognitions and Accolades The recent and noteworthy accolades of the University : MHRD has placed the University in Category A during October 2012 The University has been re-accredited by NAAC with A Grade during July 2013 in its 3 rd re-accreditation cycle. Planning Commission invited the University as a part of top 100 Universities / Institutions of Higher Education having High Research Capacity for a National Policy Dialogue on University Ranking, Research, Evaluation and Research Funding on 23 rd May 2013. The University has received the Obama Singh 21 st Century Knowledge Initiative award of $ 250,000 during the second round. The University has given emphasis for student-centred learning through CBCS and has high-tech infrastructure, enabling teachers to use the best technology practices. ICT has been used to make education accessible to all and reach out to remote sections. Creating new knowledge, acquiring new capabilities and producing an intelligent human resource pool through indepth teaching, research and extension have been the University s aims in the past, present and future days to come. MBA - Tourism and Travel Management Eligibility for Postgraduate Degree Programmes The candidate applying for P.G. programmes should have passed the qualifying examination (three year degree programme) (10+2+3 or 11+1+3 pattern) of a recognised university in the first attempt with at least 55% marks in the major subject concerned. 1. Procedure for Admission M.Sc. / M.Com. / MBA Degree Programmes The application forms can be obtained from the Registrar s Office, on payment of ` 250/- in cash or by Bank Demand Draft, drawn in favour of the Registrar, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, payable at Coimbatore, together with a self-addressed stamped envelope (23 x 10 cms size) for ` 20/-. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Candidates belonging to Tamil Nadu can get the prospectus and application form by paying 50% of the cost of the application on production of an attested copy of the Community Certificate and the Degree Course completion certificate. A Separate application form must be used for each of the courses. Attested copies of all the mark sheets should be attached to the application form. 1. The selection intimation card. 2. Secondary and Higher Secondary Examination mark list / pre - degree mark list. (Original +2 self-attested copies) 3. Degree mark list and the Degree/ Diploma Certificates (Original +2 self -attested copies). 4. Transfer Certificate / College Leaving Certificate (Original +2 self-attested copies). 5. Conduct Certificate from the Head of the institution in which the candidate last studied. (Original +2 self-attested copies) 6. Migration Certificate (for other University candidates). 7. Community Certificate from local Tahsildar in the case of SC/ST/BC/ OBC and de-notified Tribes belonging to Tamil Nadu. In case of OBC, recent certificate as per Government of India norms to be produced. 8. Medical Fitness Certificate from the Govt. Civil Surgeon. 9. A Certificate in proof of age. 10. In the two passport size photographs, write the Name of the Candidate & Name of the PG Programme on the reverse side. Admission is strictly subject to verification of original mark sheets. If the original mark sheets are found to be bogus at any point of time, the authorities reserve the right to cancel the admission and take criminal action against the candidate as per rules. Two seats under supernumerary Quota for students from Jammu and Kashmir with relaxation in cut-off percentage upto 10%. Scholarship The eligible SC/ST, OBC, PwD students should submit their scholarship form for the academic year by February for processing scholarship to SC/ST, OBC, PwD students each year. Laboratories, Library and other Facilities Laboratories The University has well equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Physiology, Bacteriology, Zoology, Botany, Basic and Advanced Nutrition, Foods, Animal experiments, Interior Design, Textile testing, Bio-textiles, Psychology, Clothing, Laundry, Language Lab, e-learning Lab, Computer 12

Lab and Audiovisual Aids. The Model Nursery school provides experiences in Human Development and Pre-school Education. Library The Library is equipped with all modern facilities to satisfy the information needs of the readers. It houses 2,34,486 volumes comprising of books and journals. It also provides access to more than 10,000 electronic journals through INFLIBNET. Students are expected to make the maximum use of the library. The library also subscribes to DELNET with 1,28,91,696 books and 33,944 journals. Auditorium The University has two auditoria with modern facilities. The Swami Vivekananda auditorium accommodates 500 members and the Thiruchitrambalam auditorium has a capacity to seat over 2000 members. Hostels There are six hostels, Kalaimagal Illam, Thirumagal Illam, Malaimagal Illam, Malarmagal Illam, Arpana Illam and Poomagal Illam with modern amenities and conveniences. There is a separate building to house the Postgraduate students and staff. Catering in the hostel is vegetarian. The mess is run on the dividing system. Placement Cell A Placement Cell has been established to help the students to find suitable employment opportunities. Entrepreneurship Development Cell Entrepreneurship Development Cell is functioning in the campus to promote Entrepreneurship and to encourage the students to take up Entrepreneurship as an alternative career option. Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps sponsored by Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI, India), Gujarat are conducted to create awareness among students on Entrepreneurship and provide opportunities to meet successful entrepreneurs in different fields. Seminar Hall The University possesses a Media-equipped, State-of-the-art Seminar Hall which has National/International Video Conferencing facilities with a seating capacity of 175. C.A.R.E. C.A.R.E. (Centre for Ambitious and Resourceful Endeavors) is functioning under the Department of Psychology renders services to the students in their academic, 13

relational, social and emotional concerns. The faculty members in the department are trained and experienced in handling students issues, which need assistance. C.A.R.E. organizes psychodiagnostics every year for all the outgoing students in mapping their area of interest and personality types. Games Courts have been laid for badminton, volley ball, basket ball, tennikoit and tennis. Physical education is compulsory for the first year degree students. Coaching in tennis is available on payment of `300/- per year in two instalments. Students desiring to join the Tennis Club must enrol themselves for the year. National Service Scheme (NSS) / National Cadet Corps (NCC) NSS / NCC / Sports are the extra curricular components for all the Undergraduate students, with academic credit for theory, practicals, special camp in the work areas and special activities. Community and Social Service (CSS) CSS is a curricular requirement for PG and B.Ed. students. It has academic weightage on par with other subjects. The students will write a theory paper on CSS at the end of the second semester. Bank A branch of the Indian Bank operates on the campus for the convenience of the students and staff. 14

Rules and Regulations All students shall abide by the rules and regulations laid down for their discipline and development. 1. Students are required to be neatly dressed in salwars / sarees in keeping with Indian culture and in White Khadi uniform sarees for special occasions. 2. Costly jewels should not be worn in the campus. The University is not responsible for any loss. 3. Students are required to participate in assembly prayer and in all the activities and functions of the University and observe order at all times. Absenting on such occasions will be considered as misconduct. 4. Organising meetings, entertainments and collecting money for any purpose in the campus without the permission of the Registrar are prohibited. 5. Students should read the notice boards carefully everyday. 6. Visitors are not allowed during working hours. 7. Students and parents should not tip the workers of the University. If they desire, they can deposit their gifts in the Workers Fund maintained in the Office. 8. All students are expected to be in the premises of the University during the working hours from 9.45 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. 9. Day scholars should not undertake any transactions on behalf of students in the hostel. They are not permitted in the hostel premises. 10. The University does not entertain any letters or other postal transactions on behalf of the day scholars. 11. Discipline needs to be observed in class rooms and campus during working hours. 12. Students should be regular in attendance and punctual to the classes. (They should be in the class before five minutes of the commencement of the class. If they are late by more than five minutes they will lose the attendance for the hour). Students must have put in a minimum of 75 per cent attendance in each course to be eligible to appear for the semester examination. 13. All applications for leave must be submitted to the Deans one week in advance except in case of illness or other unforeseen causes. Leave applications should be written in the prescribed format and duly attested by parents / guardians / warden and they should be submitted to the Deans through the Head of the Department by the end of the week. 14. In case a student misses any test when she represents the University in Sports, NCC, NSS, Academic related activities etc., during the test period, the average mark for the tests performed will be taken, provided she submits the permission letter in time. 15

15. Parents will be informed about the class performance and behaviour of their wards, as and when the need arises. They are required to write to the Registrar acknowledging receipt of all the communications, explaining the steps taken by them to rectify the situation. 16. Results of all semester examinations will be hosted in the website www.avinuty.ac.in. 17. All requests for seasonal and other educational travel concessions by train or plane from bonafide students must be made to the Deans during the period which will be specified on the notice board. Request for signing concession forms will not be entertained during any other period. Concessions are available only for journeys to and from the home address specified in the application forms for admission. The outward journey should be undertaken only after the date of completion of the examinations. 18. Parents and Guardians must notify changes in their address promptly. They must inform the Registrar within two weeks when their wards discontinue their studies. 19. Those who apply for Transfer and Conduct Certificates must indicate (a) the year and the class last studied (b) the extra curricular activities (c) the class teacher's name (d) the purpose for which certificates are required and (e) the address to which certificates are to be sent. 20. Fees once paid are not refundable. Students who leave after the first semester will be required to pay tuition and other fees due for both the semesters. The fees must be remitted by students or parents in the office on any working day between 9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. The students are requested to keep their receipts intact, to be submitted to the Registrar s office for verification, if required at a later date. 21. The Registrar has the right to ask any student to leave the University and issue Transfer Certificate at any time during the course of the year for indiscipline, unauthorised absence and non-payment of fees and dues. 22. Students are strictly prohibited from using mobile phone in the campus. Disciplinary action will be taken against defaulters. Holding phones will entail suspension for 10 working days. 23. Students are required to wear their ID Cards at all times within the campus. Candidates are requested to take sufficient number of attested copies of their certificates before submitting the originals to the office. The original certificates will not be returned to the students after admission till the completion of the course.
