Quick Start This document outlines the steps to install SAMLite system into a single box of server and configure it to run for passive collection (domain login script). This configuration is a quick start for fast deployment on network and client desktops running under Microsoft Active Directory environment. SAMLite is designed to be able to install its components onto multiple machines in a large geographical deployment scenario. But for this quick start/deployment purpose, a single server will host all the components. Server Requirements 1. Microsoft Windows XP Professional/ Windows 2000/ Windows Server 2003 2. Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 or higher 3. Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extension 1.0 4. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition or full blown SQL Server 2005 instance. 5. IIS 5.0 or higher 6. Access to Active Directory server s login script directory (NETLOGON) 7. Optional. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express. Client requirements 1. Microsoft Windows NT, 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP Professional, Server 2003, Vista 2. Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service 3. Connected to LAN and joined Active Directory domain SAMLite Installers 1. SAMLite setup file (SAMLiteSetup.exe) Installing SAMLite To install full system of SAMLite, you need the only SAMLite setup file as shown above. Obtain the installer and bring it to the designated server. Step 1 Log in to the server using a user account that has local administrator rights. Install all pre-requisite software before installing SAMLite. (see server requirements) Step 2 1. Run SAMLite setup file. 2. Ensure Web Dashboard, Import service, Scheduled Scan Service and Active Probe are checked under Choose components. Click Next button to proceed. Page 2 of 5
3. Accept the default installation directory or choose another directory. Default directory is C:\Program Files\SAMLite\v5. 4. When prompted with whether you want the system to Create a virtual directory called SAMLite for the Web Dashboard, select Yes. 5. You will be prompted whether you want the system to Create a virtual directory called SAMLite for the Active Probe select Yes. 6. Check Run SAMLite 5.0 if it is unchecked, and then click Finish button. 7. You will be prompted with SAMLite database configurator wizard. Click next button to continue. 8. Select Configure database connection when you are prompted to choose your operation mode. 9. Enter the configuration information for your SQL Server instance and click Next button. 10. Select Create New Database radio button, and enter a name for the database you are about to create and click Next button. By default, SAMLiteV5 would be the name for new database. SAMLite will be automatically configured to use this database after you having creating it. 11. Click Next button to proceed. 12. Under Step 4: Select Component, ensure that these check boxes are selected: a. SAMLite Administrative Web Dashboard b. SAMLite Import Service c. SAMLite Monitoring Service d. SAMLite Scheduler Service 13. Click Next button to proceed. Click yes when prompted to update database connection for selected components. 14. Click Close button. Click yes when prompted to restart the services of Import Service or Scheduler Service. 15. Click Close button to exit the wizard. You have completed these from step 2: 1. Web dashboard and import service files have been installed. 2. Default virtual directory called SAMLite has been created. 3. New database has been created under your SQL Server instance. 4. Web dashboard and import service have been configured to use the new database. 5. Import service (and optional schedule scan service) has been installed and started. Installing SAMLite license By default, when you install SAMLite using the setup file above, you will also be installing a license limited to 5 nodes only. This license enables you to collect up to 5 machines only. If you have a permanent license or an evaluation license, you can replace that default license by following the steps below: 1. Ensure your license file is named as SAMLicense.dat. Page 3 of 5
2. Place the file at your Import Service directory. Default directory is C:\Program Files\SAMLite\v5\ImportService. 3. Make a copy of the license file and paste it Web Dashboard directory. Default directory is C:\Program Files\SAMLite\v5\WebDash. Deploying SAMLite login script SAMLite collects inventory data from client desktops using domain login script that is attached to every Active Directory user. On user login to the domain, the system will run the attached login script and send the inventory data as a file (xml file) back to SAMLite server. The path that enables SAMLite to know where to send the xml file is defined inside the login script. The steps here will guide you on preparing SAMLite login script with the necessary settings before you can manually put into the Active Directory server. Pre-requisites 1. Access to Active Directory server and write access to NETLOGON directory. Step 1 1. Go to web dashboard installation directory. Default directory is C:\Program Files\SAMLite\v5\WebDash. 2. Go to LoginScripts directory and run LSPrepMgr.exe. 3. Click Next button to continue. 4. Enter the default share path in UNC format. Your default share name is SAMShare$, therefore your UNC path should be \\your_server_hostname\samshare$. For example, \\samsvr01\samshare$ where samsvr01 is SAMLite server s hostname. Alternatively, you may use IP address of the server instead of its hostname. 5. Click Next button to continue. A Message Configuration has been successful will be shown. Click OK to proceed. 6. The set of login scripts to bring to Active Directory server is located inside a folder with its name set to today s date under the LoginScripts directory. The full path to the folder is also shown at the wizard status screen. 7. Bring the entire folder to your Active Directory s NETLOGON directory. Rename it to sam folder 8. You can then assign your domain users to run sam.bat (from the brought over folder) as their domain login script. Page 4 of 5
You have completed these: 1. Configured correct share path into SAMLite login script. 2. Deployed the login script to Active Directory server. Start to collect data You may start to collect hardware and software data from user s desktop after assigning the user with SAMLite login script. Ask your user to logoff and re-login to take effect of the new login script. Observe the user s screen right after she logs in to her desktop. Observe these: 1. A command prompt window appears right after her login. 2. Wait till the command windows exits. View the report You may then see the collected information via web dashboard. By default, you can access the report from SAMLite server via a web browser by pointing to http://localhost/samlite. You may also access the report from remote machine by substituting localhost with the server s hostname or IP address. Page 5 of 5
