College College of Criminal Justice Education Course Title Forensic Science Certificate Program Description/Obectives Specifically, the program aims to: To support the participants to competently address questions and issues that intersect with the legal arena. To support participants to pursue professional practice in a manner that adheres to the scientific principles and ethics of the various forensic concentration and specializations. Ensure participants develop skills and professional practices that render them culturally competent and familiar with differing practices in the global community. Allow participants to advance within the fields of law enforcement, corrections, security or victim services. Assist law enforcement agencies in advancing officers capabilities to conduct thorough forensic investigations to solve criminal cases. Course Outline Psychology of Crime Explores the psycho-biological bases of criminal behavior as they pertain to cultural, economic, religious and geographic aspects of the social environment. Criminal Investigative Analysis is used to examine offender profiles, victim-offender relationships and best practices in applying psychological principles to crime scene analysis. Criminalistics and Crime Scene Investigation Study of scientific crime scene investigation, identification, and detection methods. Cyber Crime Investigation Basics of the most common cybercrimes investigations. Investigative strategies, including proper assessment and documentation of cybercrimes are discussed as well as offender profiles.

Community-Based Crime and Policing Review of the risk factors associated with concentration of criminal activity in neighborhoods and strategies for prevention, investigation, security and policing. Victimology and Victim Services An in-depth analysis of the precursors, correlates, dynamics and effects of crime and terrorism on victims, victimizations and revictimization. Ramifications for prevention, investigation and risk management are discussed. Threat Assessment and Risk Management Overview of evidence-based approaches to identifying and mitigating and managing risks of acts of criminality, school violence and terrorism. Sex Crimes and Human Trafficking Designed for participants and practitioners interested in the scope and applications of forensic psychology in offender profiling, victim selection, crime scene investigations, and serial crimes. Special focus is given to the etiology and investigation of sexual predators such as rapists, child molesters and pedophiles. Participants will be introduced to the role of paraphilia in sex crimes. Case studies of sexual predators are examined in relation to understanding criminal paraphilia, fantasy, criminal personalities, profiling, and crime scene investigations. Arson and Juvenile Fire-Setting Investigations Participants will explore the etiology, psycho-behavioral characteristics and motivations of juvenile fire-setters, adult arsonists, pyromaniacs and pyrophilics. Through case analysis, environmental stressors, both physical and emotional, that contribute to fire crimes are examined. Participants will learn to identify and assess warning signs in juveniles and persons who use fire for self-gratification, and develop best practices for the investigation, intervention and

prevention of fire related crimes. Homicide, Mass and Serial Murder Investigations Designed for those interested in the psychological motivations of murder as they relate to criminal investigations. These include family, gang, mass and serial murder cases. In cases of family homicides these killings focus on filicides, infanticides, parricides, matricides, and fratricides. Participants will examine the scope and context in which pathways to murders are constructed including motivations, victim-offender relationships and precipitating events. Participants will review via case analysis, stressors, both physical and emotional that lead to school shootings, euthanasia and murder-suicides. Identifying and assessing warning signs are explored as well as developing best practices for intervention and prevention of homicides. Global Crime and Comparative Criminal Justice Systems Provides an overview of the strategies employed by other nations to address issues of crime and national security. Study of selected criminal justice agencies in the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom, and Asia. Coursework into Practice Application of knowledge. Real world examples of criminal and terrorist acts will be utilized to support participants to integrate and apply knowledge gained in coursework and research activities. Participants will work in multidisciplinary teams to identify threats, risks, interventions and opportunities for prevention associated with criminal events.
