Part 2 Application Form (Continued) The UCW goal is to assist applicants to make a good decision both in terms of personal and career goals and to broaden the decision process beyond marks alone. MBA applications must include the following information: Reference letters [These are only required if requested.] Transcripts Resume Statement of Intent Work Experience Reference Letters [If requested] If requested, we look forward to two letters of reference, preferably, but not necessarily from an employer, and an academic who has taught the applicant. Essentially, the letters should help the Admissions Committee decide upon the likelihood that the person applying will succeed. Factors such as motivation and intellectual capacity are relevant, as well as the perceived benefits to the applicant, through completion of the program. The applicant should inform the referee of the nature of the program so as to enable him/her to provide an informed letter of reference. While there is no standard format, the letter should include: 1. the length of time the applicant has been known to the referee 2. the nature of the relationship (professor, manager, et cetera) 3. timely information, usually no more than 10 years old 4. specific attributes that support the information provided 5. information relevant to the application/program rather than generic types of references 6. where work experience is limited, relevant voluntary and community activities 7. contact information and availability for further clarification if required Reference letters are to be sent directly to University Canada West. We do not release reference letters to applicants as they are sent in confidence and the British Columbia Protection of Privacy Legislation prohibits such action. Candidates for the MBA normally hold an undergraduate degree with a B or better average, but UCW offers Prior Learning, Assessment and Recognition (PLAR), which can provide credit for experience. In this circumstance, applicants with senior work experience, combined with a portfolio of educational activities, formal and informal, may achieve direct entry. Such applicants have to take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Please check the UCW Calendar for further information.
International applicants may be subject to an evaluation of their transcripts by the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES at: http://www.bcit.ca/ices/). This service should be contacted directly when the Admissions Committee requests such action. There is an ICES fee for this examination which is paid directly to them. Transcripts Official transcripts are to be sent to UCW, directly from the issuing institution. Copies are NOT acceptable substitutes. If your application is received prior to transcripts being available, a provisional acceptance may be made using unofficial transcripts/documents, subject to validation when official documents are received. Resume In order for us to maximize program content, we require a detailed resume that outlines your career experience, including the organizations you have worked with, the positions you have held, and your responsibilities. Please give emphasis to the most recent ten (or more) years. Statement of Intention This document should be no more than two typed pages in length and should outline your motivation for taking an MBA and how you see its potential for personal and organizational growth. Additionally, please describe the nature of the contribution you feel you can bring to the program. This statement of intention should help to demonstrate that you are the right person for this program and our MBA program is the right course of studies for you. Work Experience MBA applicants are expected to have work experience, preferably including at least 2 years managing people and/or projects. If this is not evident in your resume please explain why. Volunteer work may count towards your application. Thank you and we look forward to your joining us.
