What is STAAR? The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) are new assessments that will focus on increasing college readiness of high school students and help to ensure that Texas students are competitive with other students both nationally and internationally. 3
College readiness means the level of preparation a student must attain in English language arts and mathematics courses to enroll and succeed, without remediation, in an entry level general education course for credit in that same content area for a baccalaureate degree or associate degree program. (HB 3, Section 39.024a) 4
More rigorous Contains more test questions Time limit Course specific (EOC) 5
What does rigor mean? Questions will be more complex and require multi step solutions Higher order thinking skills (analysis, synthesis) will be assessed on multiple questions 6
