NAPLES AND SURROUNDINGS The historical center of Naples : Spaccanapoli The path starts with a visit to "Spaccanapoli", as the Decumanus Inferior of the ancient Neapolis is definied, of whom we perfectly read the ancient urban layout featuring characterized by hinges and decumani. It includes a visit to the baroque churc, Chiesa del Gesù, the Convent of Santa Chiara with its fourteenth century church and its cloister decorated in the eighteenth century by the precious "riggiole" majolica of brothers Massa. We arrive, then, crossing Piazza San Domenico, in Via San Gregorio Armeno, the famous street of the shepherds, that between folklore and tradition, hides the beautiful church of the same name which is surprising for the exuberance of decoration. The tour will conclude at the chapel Sansevero, conceived by Prince Raimondo di Sangro, alchemist and scientist, and guardian of the famous Cristo Velato of Giuseppe Sammartino. The historical center of Naples: from the Cathedral to San Gregorio Armeno A visit to the Cathedral of Naples and the famous Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro inside, offers visitors the chance to grasp fully the sacredness of one of the services most felt by the Neapolitans and the magnificence of the Baroque more authentic. The tour continues in the Church of Pio Monte della Misericordia, secular institution founded in 1601 and within which you can admire, among the masterpieces of the Neapolitan painting of the seventeenth century, the painting of the Sette opere di Misericordia, painted by Caravaggio in 1607, testimony of the passage of this famous artist in Naples. We will proceed along the Decumano Maggiore visiting the churches of the Girolamini and of San Lorenzo Maggiore * until we ll reach the famous road of the shepherds, Via San Gregorio Armeno, where you can visit the church of San Gregorio Armeno, famous for its exuberant baroque decoration. * you can visit, on demand of the group, the archaeological excavations of San Lorenzo cost 9 euro
Naples views : from Castel dell Ovo to Posillipo The route will visit the most scenic and fascinating spots of the city : from the hill of Posillipo and the promenade of Via Caracciolo to Castel dell Ovo. From the hill you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples, you ll sea its typical half-moon. You ll enjoy the unusual beauty of the islands and the imposing Mount Vesuvius, this hill was inhabited by the Greeks 2500 years ago. We will cross then via Caracciolo, created on a sea filled in the nineteenth century, is considered one of the most beautiful coastal world. After that, a visit to what was once the island of Megaride where the Greeks landed in the seventh century and founded the ancient Partenope, now entirely occupied by the bulk of the oldest castle in Naples, Castel dell 'Ovo, in whose name lies one of the most beautiful Neapolitan legends. Places of power The path starts with a visit to the most representative places of power of sovereign who ruled the city. The famous Piazza del Plebiscito, commissioned by Joachim Murat as a symbol of the sovereignty of the Emperor Napoleon and overlooked by the seventeenth-century Royal Palace, and the beautiful church of San Francesco di Paola, neoclassical structure built on the model of the Roman Pantheon commissioned by King Ferdinand of Bourbon in 1816. Just beyond the oldest European opera Theater, Teatro San Carlo commissioned by King Charles of Bourbon, the Galleria made of iron and glass dedicated to King Umberto I and Castel Nuovo, commissioned by King Charles I of Anjou as a royal residence, but completely transformed by King Alfonso of Aragon, who made it an important center of culture and power, as shown by the triumphal entrance arch, a masterpiece of Naples Renaissance. Through the galleria you get on the historic Via Toledo, commissioned by viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo to join the ancient city with the expansion of the Viceroy, along which is Palazzo Zevallos, now guardian of the Martirio di Sant Orsola, the last Caravaggio's work before his death. Esoteric Naples Populated by sirens and sibyls, the perfect setting for magicians and alchemists, Naples is a city par excellence where there s a mix of myths and magic, religion and superstition. You have just to go in the historical center to touch with hand the persistence of such arcane traditions. This itinerary is, in fact, a route that offers visitors a new and unusual interpretation of monuments, palaces and churches overlooking the ancient city decumani greek-roman. We will start from Piazza del Gesù, where the ancient baroque church built on the former palace of the Sanseverino, hides in the façade the ancient story of the building. From the hidden messages to those Masonic and esoteric shown carefully in the Masonic temple, par excellence the Sansevero Chapel. Continuing along Spaccanapoli you reach the courtyard of Palazzo Carafa Maddaloni, where in the statue of the Horse of Neptune, you can take one of the signs of the passage of Virgil in Naples, here more magician than poet. From the pagan sphere to the religious one, coming to Chiesa della Pietrasanta in a place infested by the devil, to the Church of Purgatorio ad arco, whose crypt bears traces of the cult of souls pezzentelle, "e cap
e' mort", skulls in to which, for devotion and superstition, people since the seventeenth century reserved the most loving cures and the most heartfelt prayers. Phlegraean Fields The visit will allow you to discover the so-called "burning fields" as defined by the Greeks for the volcanic nature of the place that still fascinates with the presence of several extinct craters. To their dormant volcanic activity are connected bradyseism and thermalism that once made believe Aegean settlers to have found places narrated in the Homeric poems. We propose two itineraries. First Itinerary : Pozzuoli and Cumae A first itinerary includes a visit of Pozzuoli, you ll visit Flavio amphitheater and the Temple of Serapis, to the discovery of the last vestiges of Puteoli, the main port of Rome to the East in the second century BC.On the same day, you ll visit Cumae, to the discovery of ancient ruins of the first colony of Magna Grecia in the Mediterranean. Pozzuoli: Flavio amphitheater and the Temple of Serapis The amphitheater of Pozzuoli is the third largest built in Italy after the Colosseum and the amphitheater of Capua. Probably built by the same architects who designed the Colosseum, it has an auditorium that can contain about 20,000 spectators. Very impressive are the underground areas, in excellent condition, used for the creation of "special effects" and dynamic scenes during the gladiatorial games. The temple of Serapis is a macellum dating from the late first century AD incorrectly identified in this way for the discovery of the statue of the Egyptian divinity. With its square structure and the shops lined on the sides of a large paved courtyard, it is the only example of a market close to the harbor to witness the commercial districts of ancient Puteoli. Cuma. The visit of Cumae will learn about the history of the first cities of Magna Graecia, the ancient land appreciated by the Greeks who founded Cumae Euboea. Climbing up the fortified hill, at its foot once there was the city, you ll see the remains of the ancient acropolis with its charming Sybil's Cave, the Romanesque crypt, the remains of the ancient ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the Temple of Jupiter. Rate: 35 per person (minium 6 persons) Second itinerary: Baia: spa complex and castle. The old Baia, famous for its hot springs and its beauty, was a resort and resting place of the Roman aristocracy as evidenced by the remains of the ancient spa complex which contains valuable evidence of the ancient patrician residences and facilities thermal of imperial era (I-IV century AD.), scenically located on terraces sloping down towards the sea. We will go on with the visit of the castle built by King Alfonso II of Aragon at the end of the fifteenth century, and almost entirely rebuilt by order of the viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo, which is today the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields. Inside the testimonies of the glorious ancient past of this area are collected. Two floors of the museum with more than 40 rooms
