Welcome to Learning Opportunities in Renfrewshire This brochure contains community based learning opportunities for adults available in Renfrewshire from August 2014 to December 2014. There are a variety of courses, classes and groups available on a wide range of subjects from Core Skills Beginner courses, leisure classes, through to more advanced SCQF levels. Many of the classes offer skills for work, encouraging learners to upgrade their skills to make them more employable. For those already in employment there is help available to improve their knowledge and skills. Skills for Life classes are available for the more mature learner. As well as a free crèche service is available for some of the classes and courses. Online and distance learning opportunities are also available, contact Ferguslie elearning Centre, Adult Learning and Literacies Area Office, Renfrewshire Libraries and University of West of Scotland. A partnership between Invest in Renfrewshire and Adult Learning and Literacies provide additional learning opportunities and support for jobseekers in Renfrewshire. Provision is provided in learning centres, Youth and Adult Employability Hubs, West College Scotland and Renfrewshire Libraries. Description of Classes Adult Literacies Adult Literacy classes are for learners aged 16 and over and assist them to gain and update their skills in reading, writing, spelling and numbers. We also offer help with improving your job prospects, driving theory, NVQ care, helping your child with homework, Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) and entrance exams for Police and Armed Forces etc. This course is aimed at people with no, or very little, computing skills. Learners are introduced to skills such as the internet, e-mail, word processing and typing. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) ESOL classes help learners with speaking, listening, writing and reading English, helping them communicate effectively in their everyday lives. Essential IT for Jobseekers Essential IT skills for job seekers including support with online applications and submitting CVs, make new benefit claims; register, search and apply for jobs in Universal Job Match; and fulfil Job Seeker Commitments. IT Skills for Life This course is aimed at learners who have some computer skills and would like to learn more. The content of the course is negotiated with participants and can include internet skills, introduction to Facebook, online shopping, graphics and much more. Parenting Matters This course helps parents develop an understanding of themselves and their children, building mutual respect, self-esteem and confidence. Speakeasy Speakeasy is a fun course for parents of all ages to help them talk to their children about sex and relationships. Parents become more aware of the facts around sex and are given the support and information needed to discuss this issue with their children. Steps to Excellence (STEPS) An internationally recognised course aimed at improving and enriching peoples lives. It offers learners the opportunity to take a fresh look at their current way of life; enables them to see how much they are truly capable of achieving and offers them the tools to make positive change. Work Clubs The work club provides access to PC s and Internet for jobseekers and staff provide support with job searches, application forms, CV s and any requirements of Universal Jobmatch. IT Skills for Work This course is aimed at learners who are in work or are seeking employment. Participants will learn IT skills such as online job searching, online application forms, CV s and Microsoft Office including Powerpoint. 4 5

Renfrewshire Libraries Bookbug Sessions No need to book, just drop in! Songs, rhymes, rhythm and movement! Free, friendly and fun, for babies, toddlers and their parents/ carers. Most sessions are run by specially trained Bookbug leaders. Computing and Online Learning Renfrewshire Libraries offer library members an online learning package called ECDL (European Computing Driving Licence) a British Computing Society course (BCS). Six Book Challenge The Six Book Challenge is about encouraging less confident adult readers to get into reading. You can sign up at your local library where you will receive your very own reading diary. Library staff can recommend suitable books. Knitting Group Ripping Yarns is for anyone who wants to learn to knit or crochet. They meet once a month in Paisley Central Library on Friday mornings, 11.00am 12.30pm.
