Application Guideline for Continuation to the 3-Year Doctoral Curriculum The International Program in Economics and Management (IPEM) Graduate School of Economics and Management, Tohoku University 2015Academic Year The International Program in Economics and Management (IPEM) recruits eligible non-japanese students for the 3-year Doctoral Curriculum who are currently enrolled in 2-year Master programs or professional graduate schools in Tohoku University. Whether or not currently belonging to the IPEM course, all students who wish to continue to this curriculum must follow the application procedure stated below. 1. Enrollment A few 2. Application Qualification Applicants must hold non-japanese nationality, be currently enrolled in 2-year Master programs or professional graduate schools in Tohoku University, writing Master's thesis or research paper in English, and expected to receive a Master Degree or Master of Accountancy by September 2015. 3. Application Period July 22 (Wed.) to 17:00 August 3 (Mon.), 2015. Application documents sent by post will only be considered if they arrive within the above application period. Applications will be accepted on weekdays from 8:30 to 12:45, and from 13:45 to 17:00. (Applications are not accepted on Saturdays and Sundays.) If sending your application by postal mail, please use registered post and write "IPEM Doctoral Course Application Enclosed" in red pen on the envelope. 4. Application Procedure Applicants must send the following documents by postal mail, or bring them in person, to the Instruction Section, Graduate School of Economics and Management. Applicants can receive application forms at the Instruction Section, Graduate School of Economics and Management. Application to Continue, Exam Admission Ticket/Photo Sheet Use provided form. In the photograph area, please attach a 5cm high x 4cm wide photograph taken within the last three months (3 photos; must show upper body from front, no hat). 2. Master's thesis (3 copies) Required only if you want to change your academic advisor, desiring a specialization different from that of your Master's curriculum, or that of the project research instructor for your research paper in the Department of Accountancy.
3. Abstract of Master's Thesis or research paper (3 copies) 4. Research Plan (3 copies) Typed on A4-size paper (approximately 1,500 words, doublespaced, in English). Typed on A4-size paper (approximately 3,000 words, doublespaced, in English). 5. Return Envelope Please include a 23.5cm x 12cm self-addressed envelope stamped with a 672 yen postage stamp. 5. Screening Applicants will be comprehensively assessed based on their thesis, an oral exam, and their research plan. For applicants not currently belonging to the IPEM course, English proficiency will also be evaluated by their TOEFL scores. (1) Thesis Evaluation For applicants enrolled in the Master's curriculum, their Master's theses will be evaluated. For applicants enrolled in the Department of Accountancy, their research papers will be evaluated. (2) English Proficiency Test Applicants not currently belonging to the IPEM course must request ETS to deliver the TOEFL Official Score Report to us no later than September 8, 2015. The test must have been taken after September 1, 2013. Our TOEFL Institution Code Number is 0232. We require a TOEFL-iBT Score of no less than 79 or a TOEFL- PBT Score of no less than 550. Any student who graduated from a university in a country in which English is an official language, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, or those whose native language is English, may inquire in advance about the possibility of waiving the TOEFL requirement. Contact e-mail:ipem@econ.tohoku.ac.jp (3) Oral Examination For applicants currently enrolled in the Master's curriculum who wish to continue studying in the same field, the oral examination given to determine completion of the Master's curriculum will be substituted for this examination. Only applicants who want to change their academic advisors, wishing to study in a field other than that of their Master's curriculum, must undergo another oral examination. For applicants currently enrolled in the Department of Accountancy who wish to continue studying in the same field as that of the project research instructor who advised them on their research paper, the oral examination given in connection with their research paper will be substituted for this examination. Only applicants who want to change their academic advisors, wishing to study in a field other than that of the project research, must undergo another oral examination. Announcement of Successful Applicants Date: September 17 (Thu.), 2015 17:00 (tentative) Place: Tohoku University Faculty of Economics Bulletin Board (The west side under Faculty of Economics Lecture Hall 3, Kawauchi Minami Campus) Successful applicants will also be announced on the IPEM website, as well as personally notified in writing; applicants who did not pass will not be sent any notification. We cannot accept any inquiries on this matter by phone, writing, etc.
7. Term of Enrollment The standard term of enrollment is 3 years 8. Tuition Semesterly tuition is JPY267,900; yearly tuition is JPY535,800 (both figures are estimates). Note 1: Students currently enrolled in 2-year Master programs or professional graduate schools in Tohoku University for whom tuition is being paid by a third party/service can continue to pay in this way; such students are asked to prepare enough funds in their accounts to cover the tuition fees in advance. If tuition amounts are revised, the new tuition will become applicable from the time of the revision. Note 2: Information on waivers and deferments of tuition fees will be announced after the announcement of successful applicants. 9. Important Notices (1) After completing the application procedures, your application documents cannot be altered or returned. (2) Examinees must come to the designated testing venue by their assigned time (they will be notified of this time at a later date). (3) If an examinee misses any of their examination subjects, they will be considered to have failed. (4) Examinees must bring their Exam Admission Tickets to the examination. Please carefully read the instructions on the Exam Admission Ticket. Exam Admission Tickets will be issued on September 2 (Wed.). If you do not receive an Exam Admission Ticket, please contact the Instruction Section, Graduate School of Economics and Management (Phone: 022-795-6265). (5) We cannot accept incomplete applications. (6) When sending application documents by postal mail, please use registered post. Comments After entering the graduate course, after a fixed period of time has passed, students are allowed to change their academic advisors, if they receive permission to do so from this graduate school's Faculty Committee. 11. Privacy Policy on the Treatment of Personal Information (1) Any personal information gathered by Tohoku University shall be treated with due care in compliance with the Law for the Protection of Personal Information Retained by Independent Administrative Institutions, and the Act on the Protection of Personal Information of Tohoku University, and security measures will be taken to protect private information. (2) Personal information, such as examination scores, used in selecting applicants will be used for educational purposes, such as selecting applicants, enrollment support during enrollment procedures, follow-up surveys, and post-enrollment student support (scholarship/tuition waivers and health management etc.), and in connection with tuition collection. (3) In some cases, tasks related to entrance examinations and educational affairs may be outsourced to thirdparty contractors (hereafter, "subcontractors").
