Job Title: Pre-registration Pharmacy Technician Grade: Year 1 70% Band 4 Year 2-75% Band 4 Accountable To: Responsible To: Reports To: Responsible For: Liaises With: Chief Pharmacist Operations Manager Senior Pharmacy Technician for Education & Training NA Other Pharmacy Technicians, West Suffolk Hospital, Assistant Technical Officers (Pharmacy), Storekeeper Job Purpose: To carry out technical duties in the Pharmacy Department, under supervision. This is a training post for a period of two years, which also involves completion of the appropriate technician training course (on a day release basis) and appropriate competencies (Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills and Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science). Principal Duties: 1. Dispensary a) Dispense items for in-patients and outpatients (in accordance with written procedures), under Supervision. b) Dispense to-follow items in accordance with written procedures. c) Dispense controlled drugs (in accordance with written procedures), under supervision. d) Undertake counselling of outpatients, under supervision. e) Receptionist duties, when necessary including dealing with internal and external customers, receiving cash, credit cards and cheques for payment and operating the dispensary till. Occasionally delivering medication to wards. f) Operate the dispensary computer for the purposes of dispensing medication and occasional stock transfers. g) Undertake selling of over the counter (OTC) medicines to the public and offering advice under the supervision of a pharmacist. 2. Stockroom a) Issue ward stock items from a picking list and dispense non pre-pack items (in accordance with written procedures), under supervision. b) Issue to follow items, under supervision. Inform the Senior Technician (Dispensary) or an appropriate technician of any delays in supply. c) Receive goods into stock from suppliers, book onto the computer system and maintain paperwork informing appropriate staff of any outstanding items on the orders, under supervision d) Return incorrect items to the suppliers informing appropriate pharmacy staff e) Under supervision, order pharmacy stock from suppliers using the relevant computer systems 3. Production a) Participate in cytotoxic reconstitution and the labelling of TPN, including completion of all relevant documentation, under the supervision of the Senior Technician (Technical Services) and the Production/Purchasing Pharmacist. 4. Wards a) Participate in the ward top up service, under supervision and delivery of medication to the wards. 5. Training a) Attend the relevant technician training course, on a day release basis. General Duties: 1. To participate in a Saturday morning, late rota and Bank Holiday rota. 2. To ensure that statutory requirements are met at all times and to implement Trust policy as directed by the Head of Pharmacy Services. 3. To attend relevant training courses as appropriate. 4. To undertake other reasonable duties within the framework of the post as directed by the Head of Pharmacy Services. GENERAL NOTES CHANGES TO JOB DESCRIPTION The duties outlined above are subject to changes, after consultation with post holder, which meet the needs of the service as a result of the full implementation of the Trust Plans. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Employees of the West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust are expected to develop the IT skills necessary to support the tasks included in their post. They will, therefore be required to undertake any necessary training to support this. MAJOR INCIDENTS As the Trust is a receiving hospital for major incident casualties, the post holder is required to conform to the West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Trust's Policy on Major Incidents and to attend related training sessions as required. CONFIDENTIALITY In the course of their duties employees will have access to confidential material about patients, members of staff and other Health Service business. On no account must information relating to identifiable patients be divulged to anyone other than authorised persons, for example, medical, nursing or other professional staff, as appropriate, who are concerned directly with the care, diagnosis and/or treatment of the patient. If there is any doubt whatsoever, as to the authority of a person or body asking for information of this nature, advice must be sought from a superior officer. Similarly, no information of a personal or confidential nature concerning individual members of staff should be divulged to anyone without the proper authority having first been given. Failure to observe these rules will be regarded as serious misconduct, which could result in serious disciplinary action being taken including dismissal.
