The emphasis is given to the student s ability to understand and enjoy music. Course Objectives The student will realize the following knowledge: List and define the basic components (elements) of music. List, categorize and describe music and art movements within historical time periods. Identify, list and describe composers and their musical contributions. Listen to and identify music according to historical time period. Listen to, evaluate and critique musical performances using appropriate terminology. Create and describe a personal philosophical statement as to the importance of music to society. The student will be encouraged to develop the following dispositions: An interest and willingness to objectively explore unfamiliar musical styles. An interest in improving ability to communicate musical preference in terms of accepted musical terminology. An interest in expanding familiar musical listening preferences. Materials An outline designed to assist student note-taking will be distributed during each class session. It is recommended that students compile these outlines in a notebook to assist exam preparation. Although these outlines will cover materials on the midterm and final respectively, students may opt to take notes on laptop computers. While laptop computers are permitted for note-taking purposes, other portable electronic devices (i.e. cell phones, IPods, etc.) are not permitted during class sessions.
Required Text Kamien, R. (2008). Music, An Appreciation (6 th brief ed.) McGraw-Hill Co. The text is accompanied by a set of 5 audio CD s, or 1 CD containing mp3 files. Examinations and Assignments Midterm Exam The Midterm examination will consist of material covered as listed on the syllabus from August 25 th through October 13 th. The exam will consist of two parts: 1) Musicians & Musical Terms (multiple choice) and 2) Listening (matching). Each section will be worth 100 points for a total of 200 points. Material for the test will be derived from class lectures, reading, listening assignments and other activities listed in the syllabus. The Midterm Examination will be held on Thursday, October 15 th during class. Final Exam The Final examination will consist of material covered as listed on the syllabus from October 20 th through December 8 th. The exam will consist of two parts: 1) Musicians & Musical Terms (multiple choice) and 2) Listening (matching). Each section will be worth 100 points for a total of 200 points. Material for the test will be derived from class lectures, reading, listening assignments and other activities listed in the class syllabus. The Final Examination will be held on Thursday, December 10 th during class. Descriptive Paper Students will be required to write one descriptive paper. Students will select one work from the attached music list and write a description and critique using appropriate music terminology. Papers must be typed (12 point font, double-spaced) and be 4-5 pages in length (not including title and reference pages). Late papers will not be accepted. The Descriptive Paper will be due on Tuesday, November 10 th during class. Concert Critiques Students will be required to attend two music concerts at MDC Kendall campus in the fall semester. Students will write a critique (400 words minimum) using appropriate music terminology. Critiques will be posted to The Student Lounge forum under the MUL 1010 course heading for Concert Critiques. A concert program from the performance with the student s name printed on the cover must also be submitted to the instructor in order to receive credit. Students will be provided with a concert schedule at the beginning of the semester. The deadlines to submit concert critiques online will be as follows: Critique One based on concert attendance from 9/1 thru 10/1 must be posted on or before 10/1. Critique Two based on concert attendance from 10/2 thru 12/1 must be posted on or before 12/1. Late submissions will not be awarded credit.

Use the following chart to convert the final point total to a final letter grade. 900-1000 A I or Incomplete will not be issued for this course. 800-899 B 700-799 C Make-up exams will not be provided. 600-699 D 0-599 F Attendance Policy Extra Credit All students are eligible for extra credit by posting additional concert critiques or responses to concert critiques on the forum. Students must register for the website and adhere to the posting guidelines outlined in the registration process in order to receive credit for their submissions. Extra credit posts should be at least 25 words minimum and substantive in order to receive credit. The instructor will review the site regularly and delete posts that do not contribute to the discussion, or are posted merely for the sake of achieving post ranking minimums. Attendance Policy Students are expected to attend every class meeting and to arrive on time. Miami Dade College has no provisions for unexcused absences. Attendance will be taken for each session. 15 points will be deducted for each absence, 7 points for each tardy or early departure. Honor Code All reports, papers, written assignments, test papers, and examination papers submitted for evaluation are assumed to be original work. Academic dishonesty (i.e. submitting another s work as yours, copying answers from another student during exams) may result in a lower grade or a failing grade for the entire course.
