1 Angelina College Polk County Center, Livingston, TX Fine Arts Division MUSC 1306 Syllabus Fall 2015 Instructor: Dr. Jennifer Iles Time: Tuesday, 6:00pm-8:45pm Location: Livingston, Polk County Center, Room 107 Office Hours: via appointment I. BASIC COURSE INFORMATION: A. Course Description: Three hours credit. Basic techniques and information for the intelligent appreciation of Western Art music. A study of music as an art form and an examination of the materials of music and musical forms. Three lecture hours each week. B. Intended Audience: This is a non-music major class and satisfies the requirement for three hours in Fine Arts. The course is open to any interested students. II. INTENDED STUDENT OUTCOMES: A. Core Objectives Required for this Course 1. Critical Thinking: to include creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information 2. Communication: to include effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and visual communication 3. Teamwork: to include the ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal 4. Social Responsibility: to include the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making B. Course Learning Outcomes for all Sections 1. Students will display knowledge of music elements, i.e. melody, harmony, etc. 2. Students will display knowledge of orchestra instruments by family. 3. Students will demonstrate knowledge about 1 composer for each time period studied III. ASSESSMENT MEASURES A. Assessments for the Core Objectives: 1. Critical Thinking: Students will attend a concert or recital and complete an attendance report form. Introductory levels of critical thinking skills will be assessed using a checklist reflecting the skills emphasized on the AC Critical Thinking Rubric. 2. Communication: Written, visual, and oral communication will be assessed through (a) students responses to the recital/concert attendance report, (b) an oral/visual presentation, and (c) an orchestra internet assignment. Communication skills will be introduced and formative assessment will be completed using a checklist. 3. Teamwork: Students will work in groups of 3 or 4 to complete a critique on Impressionism. Introductory teamwork skills will be assessed using a peer evaluation checklist that measures how student work effectively as part of a group. 4. Social Responsibility: Social responsibility as it relates to music is introduced through class activities. Formative assessment of social responsibility will be completed through the use of embedded exam questions regarding choices and actions within the arts community. B. Assessments for Course Learning Outcomes 1. Students will display an understanding of musical elements through specific exam questions. 2. Student will indicate the correct families for orchestra instruments through specific exam questions. 3. Students will display their knowledge of various composers through specific exam questions.
2 IV. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES: All work or exams to be made-up is at the discretion of the instructor. It is the student s responsibility to keep track of reading assignments, exams, and out of class assignment deadlines (See V. Course Outline). 1. Students are expected read assigned chapters prior listen to related music examples prior to each class meeting. 2. Students should be prepared to discuss ideas and terminology each week, and are expected to participate actively in class discussions and musical exercises. 3. There will be two in-class listening quizzes, which incorporate listening skills covered in class and help in preparation for the midterm and final examinations. 4. Students are expected to attend at least two approved concerts/recitals and prepare an attendance report form for each. Students are expected to prepare oral/visual presentations and an internet orchestra assignment outside of class. Students are also expected to complete small group project. (See V. Course Outline, and VI. Evaluation and Grading) 5. Four examinations will be given throughout the semester. Exam dates are posted in the Course Outline. V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES: A. Required Textbooks and Recommended Readings, Materials and Equipment Listening to Music, 7 th edition by Craig Wright, access code and music download cards. B. Course Policies This course conforms to the policies of Angelina College as stated in the Angelina College Handbook. 1. Academic Assistance If you have a disability (as cited in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 or Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990) that may affect your participation in this class, you should see Karen Bowser, Room 208 of the Student Center. At a post-secondary institution, you must self-identify as a person with a disability; Ms. Bowser will assist you with the necessary information to do so. To report any complaints of discrimination related to disability, you should contact Dr. Patricia McKenzie, Administration Building, Room 105 or Attendance Attendance is required as per Angelina College Policy and will be recorded every day. Any student with three (3) consecutive absences of four (4) cumulative absences may be dropped from the class. A three hour night class counts as two classes. Records will be turned in to the academic dean at the end of the semester. Do not assume that non-attendance in class will always result in an instructor drop. You must officially drop a class or risk receiving an F. This is official Angelina College Policy. 3. Additional Policies Established by the Instructor - Fine Arts attendance requirement Students must attend and document attendance at 2 musical performances. Both daytime and night events are offered. For an off-campus concert/recital, check with instructor first. To receive credit, a recital form will be completed by the student with the printed program/ticket stub attached. Tardies and leaving class early will count as an absence. Students with perfect attendance will receive a bonus of 10 points (including no tardies or leaving class early.) 4. Mobile Phones, Pagers, and Other Electronic Devices Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off or placed in silent mode during class, with the exception of notebook computers used only for the purpose of taking notes during class. No other devices whatsoever may be used during class or exams without the instructor s permission. Frivolous use (i.e., not immediately related to class activities) of computers (Web surfing, checking , etc.) is distracting to students and instructors, interferes with delivery quality of instructions; a student found engaged in such behavior even once may be administratively dis-enrolled from the course at the instructor s discretion.

4 VI. EVALUATION AND GRADING: The instructor may modify the provisions of the syllabus to meet individual class needs by informing the class in advance as to the changes being made. A. Grading Criteria: LATE ASSIGNMENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED All grades will be available for reference on the Blackboard system. Grades will be provided to students at any point during the semester if requested. Grades can be requested by sending an to the instructor via Blackboard, at or during scheduled office hours. This course will require the use of Blackboard and Mindtap, Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint, or programs with similar capabilities. Assignment Guidelines+ 1. Oral/visual Presentation: (2 minute presentation with a visual aid) Choose one of the following to present to the class: Describe an instrument that you play Describe a music ensemble/group of which you are a member Describe a favorite group/musician using CD cover, poster or picture Describe a concert you attended Describe your musical interests or backgrounds Describe visual aid: Tell facts of concert/event, group, performer, instrument, interests Answer the following questions: what, why, when, where, how Include personal opinions and reactions 2. Orchestra Internet Assignment: You will be assigned to research a specific orchestra, as though you plan to attend. A form with questions about your orchestra is found at the end of the syllabus and posted on Blackboard. Turn in the filled-out form by the assigned date. 3. Out of Class Listening Assignment/Concert Recital Report: Attend a live performance of a concert or recital. Bring a ticket stub and program as proof of attendance. Fill out the concert report form found at the end of the syllabus posted on Blackboard. Turn in the filled-out form, ticket stub, and program by the assigned date. B.
