APPENDIX A. Rational and Description of Proposal I. Due to the increasing complexity of the sport industry, the need for qualified sport managers has become a critical issue. As such, the importance of the preparation process provided for students is paramount. An undergraduate sport management specialization offers professional preparation in the application of business principles to the sport industry. Students complete a degree program that includes courses in accounting, management, marketing, economics, business aspects of sport culture, sports information, facility management, sport ethics, sports marketing, sport law, and sport finance. This degree program prepares students for managerial careers in sport. The Physical Education Department at Georgia Perimeter College proposes an Associate degree option in Sport Management. The proposal originated, in part, from a request made by the U. S. Sport Academy a SACS accredited institution in Daphne, Alabama and represents a collaborative effort with the GPC business department on Dunwoody Campus. In addition to meeting the demand for this type of degree, the program would be transferable to a number of other universities. A sport management degree has become one of the most accepted degrees in the sport industry and at the time of this proposal only one such program is offered in the state of Georgia. An associate degree in sport management specialization would offer professional preparation in the application of business principles of the sport industry and a firm foundation to the undergraduate degree in sports management. The proposal for an associate sport management option is consistent with the philosophy and mission of Georgia Perimeter College. Through implementation of this pioneer associate management program, GPC and the Physical Education Department would assume a leadership role in the field. The foundation of this program would serve as a model for others to follow throughout the state. The Committee agrees that this program contributes to meeting the goals of the Physical Education Department and Georgia Perimeter College and in general is in keeping with the mission of GPC. 5
