Checklist As a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences you should take the following into account: Enrolment Remember to enrol to separately announced courses within the enrolment period and to other studies well before the beginning. If you are an unemployed jobseeker, please contact your local TE Services office before starting your studies! Studying In order to make sure that you get all the essential information on completing the course, you should participate to the first lecture of the course. If you have further questions relating to the content or details of a course, you may contact the teacher responsible for the course. Paying the invoice Once you have started your studies, you will get an invoice to the invoicing address you have listed. Be sure to pay your invoice in time. Updating your contact information If your contact information changes, remember to notify the contact person of the Open University of Applied Sciences. Cancellations Enrolments are binding. We do not refund any paid study fees. However, if you wish to cancel your participation in the studies, you must do so before the beginning of the studies by e-mail to avoin_amk@oamk.fi. If you wish to cancel your participation after the studies have already started, you must agree on it case by case with the contact person of the Open University of Applied Sciences. 4
Oulu University of Applied Sciences Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Oulu UAS) serves the needs of the region s working and economic life and culture. Oulu UAS maintains the diversity of polytechnic education in Northern Finland. The focus areas of Oulu UAS are future health and well-being as well as energy, natural resources and the environment. The shared teams in the higher education community are intelligent learning, innovative products and services as well as entrepreneurship and new business operations. Oulu UAS offers Bachelor s and Master s degree programmes, Vocational Teacher Education (including study counsellor and vocational special education teacher education), professional development services and Open University studies. Oulu UAS has about 9 000 students. Annually, nearly 700 students study at the Open University of Applied Sciences (in 2013, 709 students). The number of staff is around 640. Open University studies at Oulu UAS You can study at the Open University of Applied Sciences regardless of your age and basic education. The studies consist of courses leading to a Bachelor s or a Master s degree, excluding practical training, thesis and pedagogical studies. As a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences, you can improve and maintain your professional skills, study towards a Bachelor s degree or develop your competence according to your own interests. You can apply to the studies around the year, taking the enrolment periods into account. Contact information and the organisation In addition to the three campuses in Oulu, Oulu UAS offers degree programmes also in Oulainen. The operations of the Open University of Applied Sciences are co-ordinated at Student Services. In co-operation with other parties, Student Services take care of putting together the schedule of available courses, marketing, contents of web pages, administration and development of the enrolment system, study guidance and counselling as well as informing the lecturers. Available education Students at the Open University of Applied Sciences usually study in the same groups as degree students. Through the Open University of Applied Sciences, you can attend any course available if the course is not full. For information on available places, please contact the Schools providing the studies. During the academic year 2015 2016 the studies cost 15 euros for one credit or 300 euros for the entire academic year. Schedules The schedules are available in the student intranet Oiva. Remember to change the language to English at the link EN in the upper right corner. Informing and contacting the teachers The lecturers use the student intranet Oiva or e-mail to inform the students. The ways of informing are notified at the beginning of the course. Remember to tell the lecturer that you are a student at the Open University of Applied Sciences and make sure that you have been added, for example, to the e-mail list of the course. The lecturer s e-mail addresses are usually firstname.lastname@oamk.fi. All lecturers also have their own, weekly office hours. You will find the staff s contact information here. Completing your studies Attendance Theory classes do not have obligatory attendance. However, at language studies and exercises attendance is usually obligatory. For more information, please ask the lecturer of the course. Grading methods and grades The assessment regulations of Oulu University of Applied Sciences are applied to grading the completed courses. The assessment is either numeric on a scale of 0 to 5 or verbal on a scale of fail or pass. As a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences you can raise a grade of a failed course without an extra fee. You can raise a grade of an approved course once. If you wish to raise your grade, you must do so during the next term following the end of the course at the latest. Exams Please ask the Student Services of your campus for more information on exams. 7
The extent of the studies Your studies are measured with credits (cr). The credits describe the workload, which is demanded from students to complete the course. One credit corresponds approximately to 27 hours of work. Costs In addition to the study fee, you may have other expenses, for example, on textbooks, lecture material and copying. As a rule, you can lend textbooks and other course-related literature from the School s library. Information on how you can sell and copy lecture material is available on your campus (see below). Please contact the contact person for the Open University of Applied Sciences for paying your study fees. Selling and copying lecture material on campuses Kotkantie campus Engineering At the beginning of the course, the lecturer will tell you about the lecture material. When needed, you can make copies at the shop of OTE ry on the ground floor. You can also buy cards for the copy machines at the shop. Natural resources Information on how you can sell and copy lecture material is available on your campus. The lecturers do no take copies for students. You can buy copy cards to the copy machine on the ground floor at the shop of OTE ry. Media and performing arts Information on how you can sell and copy lecture material is available on your campus. The lecturers do no take copies for students. You can buy copy cards to the copy machine on the ground floor at the shop of OTE ry. School of Health and Social Care The library on the Professorintie campus has copy machines, on which you can also scan documents. You can also print out copies at computer labs provided that you use your own paper. Students can use the computer labs on the campus when they available and not used for teaching. In the Louhi building, the computer labs are on the second floor, rooms B2029, D2078 and D2080. In the Paasi building, the computer labs are rooms 2335 and 2336. You can check the availability of the rooms here (requires logging in). Certificates Once you have passed a course or a study module, you will receive a certificate. When needed, you can present the certificate, for example, to employment authorities. The lecturers will register your grade within three weeks of the assessment or the agreed deadline. When needed, you can phone or e-mail the contact person for the Open University of Applied Sciences to ask about your grade. After completing all of your studies at the Open University of Applied Sciences, you can request for the certificate by e-mailing avoin_amk@oamk.fi. IT Services As you begin your studies you contact person for the Open University of Applied Sciences will give you a student ID. For more information on using the student ID, see the IT guide for Open University students. You will be registered in the student administration system Asio as a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences. Please ask your contact person for the Open University of Applied Sciences for your group ID. The ID is usually in the following format: AVOstarting term, for example, AVO15S for students, who begin their studies in the autumn term of 2015 or AVO16K for students, who begin their studies in the spring term of 2016. 8
Every campus has computer labs for student use. Some of these labs are also available during the evenings and on weekends. Please ask your campus caretaker for more information. More detailed instructions on IT are also available in this guide (only in Finnish). You can contact IT Services by e-mailing to helpdesk@oamk.fi, by phone +358 20 611 0205 or visiting the service desks on weekdays between 11 am and 1 pm on the Kotkantie, Professorintie and Teuvo Pakkalan katu campuses. Other student services Student services Student Services on campuses give information on the operations and practices of the University of Applied Sciences, for example, on schedules, transcripts of records and exam practices. Student card and student union Only full-time students are admitted as members of the student union and granted the national student card. However, you can contact Student Union of Oulu University of Applied Sciences (OSAKO) in any matters regarding the supervision of students interest. Student restaurants As a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences you can eat at the student restaurants operated on the campuses. Contact your contact person for the Open University of Applied Sciences to receive a meal card entitling you to a more affordable price on the basic lunch menu choices (you can check the price from the restaurants). Library The libraries of Oulu UAS are open for all. The libraries operate on for different locations. More information on the libraries is available on the web site. The library staff is also ready to assist you in using the library services. It is best to get your library card already at the beginning of your studies. The libraries have modern services and collections supporting your studies. As a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences you can also get remote access to e-material located outside the campuses. Insurance coverage The students of the Open University of Applied Sciences are also covered by the insurance company LähiTapiola. The insurance coverage contains the following: A statutory accident insurance covering accidents that occur in practical training arranged according to the curriculum at the educational establishment as well as in unpaid practical, on-the-job training outside the educational establishment. An optional accident insurance covering accidents that occur somewhere else than in the above-mentioned situations as well as on the way to school, between lectures and during physical education. A travel insurance for any travels related to the studies including travel sickness insurance, travel accident insurance and luggage insurance. Please ask for a travel insurance card from your School s Student Services before the trip for possible invoicing purposes. A liability insurance for practical training on the job covering damages caused to the property of the organisation providing the training position or a third party. Note that students of the Open University of Applied Sciences can carry out practical tasks, for example, training projects at companies or at the educational establishment. As a student of the Open University of Applied Sciences, you cannot complete the compulsory practical training included in the curriculum. The personal property the students have with them at the place of study and the students own leisure time regarding the statutory and optional insurances are excluded from the insurance. As a student, you are advised to find out the coverage of your own, personal insurances, because the above-mentioned insurances do not cover, for example, periods of remote studying. In case of damages or accidents, please contact Student Services at your own campus. They will also provide you with more information on the insurance coverage of students. 9
Remote studying and studies done at partner universities are not included in the insurance coverage of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. University Sports of Oulu and Sports Pass University Sports of Oulu offers academic sport services and other welfare services for students and staff of Oulu University of Applied Sciences, University of Oulu, Diaconia University of Applied Sciences - Oulu Unit, Oulu Vocational College and the staff of Joint Authority for Education Services. University Sports of Oulu offers many different sports opportunities, courses, events, competitions as well as discounts. If you study more the 15 credits during one academic year, you are able to buy the Sports Pass. Once you have the Sports Pass, you can participate in the sports classes. In addition, you will receive discounts on sports courses and the offering of co-operation partners. The prize of the Sports Pass for the year 2014 2015 was 40 euros. You can also buy the pass only for the autumn, spring or summer. Then the prize is lower. The Sports Pass is a sticker that you will stick in your student card or other ID card with a photo, so that your identity can be verified. When purchasing the Sports Pass you will have to prove your right to study. You can ask a certificate of studying from your contact person for the Open University of Applied Sciences. Remember to tell that you need the certificate for the Sports Pass. The staff s parking spaces have limited access. All other spaces are available for students. Teuvo Pakkalan katu campus / School of Business and Information Management The parking spaces for students are located on the Urheilukatu s side, opposite to the artificial ice-rink. The parking spaces on yard are reserved for the staff. Professorintie campus and Oulainen You will need a parking permit for the parking lot on the Professorintie campus. The permit must be visible on the car always when the car is parked on the campus. You can get a parking permit from the Information desk on the campus as well as from the contact person for the Open University of Applied Sciences. Some of the parking spaces have been reserved for the staff. The adjacent parking lot of Rauhanyhdistys is also available during the day. For the Rauhanyhdistys parking lot you do not need a parking permit. Additional space is available also on the Ouluhalli parking lot. In Oulainen, the heating posts for cars are reserved, other parking spaces are available for unlimited parking. 10
