However, course materials in English can always be provided and exams can also alternatively be taken in English. On request, most lab and practical sessions will be held in English. Additionally, a number of courses are already delivered in English and the range of these is being gradually extended. A valid and internationally recognized English proficiency test such as TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge is recommended, or at least a letter of recommendation from English professor/instructor proving written and oral proficiency at least at B2 level in English. 2
German Courses / Student buddy system German language courses are offered for free. All incoming exchange students are required to submit their result of an online assessment test. The link to the test will be sent directly by email to incoming exchange students with specific instructions for submission. Assistance through buddy students is also offered. Number of students About 2000 students study at FHS as either full or part-time students. Each semester, about 60 international students come to study at the FHS. The password to fill in the online application is provided to our partner universities who then forward it to their nominees. Please contact the respective international academic coordinator responsible for the degree programme. ORIENTATION IS MANDATORY FOR INCOMING STUDENTS. Students are evaluated from 1-5, where 1 is excellent and 5 is failed. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY; At least 75% of the total units must be attended. Closest to the Urstein Campus are the student residences in the south of Salzburg (Salzburg Süd), e.g. the Europa Kolleg, 4

MISCELLANEOUS City transportation From Campus Urstein it takes about 15 min. to go to the centre of Salzburg by train (the so-called S-Bahn railway). There are special semester passes for students, and also other special tickets such as the Bayern Ticket and the Einfach Raus ticket, which allow several students to travel together during the whole day. There is also a special pass for students, the Vorteilsticket, with which regular tickets can be bought at half price. Cost of Living The Austrian exchange service (OeAD) has estimated the following costs of living per month for Austria: Accommodation costs (Basis of calculation: Student Hall of Residence, including administration fee, heating & electricity): EUR 320 Food (excluding luxury items and tobacco): EUR 240 Study and personal requirements, books, culture, recreation: EUR 290 Total: EUR 850 Visa information Depending on own preferences and style of living these costs may vary of course. Nationals of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland: If you have EU/EEA or Swiss nationality you need no visa. Please note that in case you are going to stay in Austria for more than 3 months you have to register with the competent municipal authority (Magistrat Salzburg or Bezirkshauptmannschaft Hallein) within 4 months of your stay and you will receive a confirmation of registration (fee: 15 Euros; additional fees may occur). Nationals of Third Countries: If you are not a national of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland you are a so-called national of a third country and you will need an entry and residence title for entry to and residence in Austria. Basically you need to distinguish between stays of up to 6 months and stays of more than 6 months. 1. Stays of up to 6 months: You either have to apply for a travel visa C (for a maximum of 90 days) or a residence visa D (Aufenthaltsvisum D - for stays of at least 91 days up to a maximum of 6 months), if you want to study in Austria for no longer than 6 months. Please check with the competent Austrian representative authority (embassy, consulate-general) in your home country before travelling to Austria which type of visa is suitable for your stay. Note that a visa cannot be renewed in Austria. 2. Stays of more than 6 months: You have to apply for the residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung) in person at the competent Austrian representative authority abroad before travelling to Austria. Since your application will be forwarded to Austria, you need to apply at least 3 months before your intended entry to Austria. For the application of the residence permit you need the following documents: Completed and signed application form 5

The International Office will assist the incoming students during the Welcome Days to fill in the corresponding form.
