The Squadra System What is a Squadra? Squadra is the Italian word for team. The GRCDC refers to squadra as all parents, teachers and children within a Discovery. They join for the purpose of collaboratively planning and carrying out one school community event each year. What is the Squadra s Purpose? The Squadra system intends to spread out responsibilities, include parents in a Reggio Emilia inspired way of working and offer families influence over what occurs within the school. What can Squadras Do? Gather teachers, children and parents Reflect on the previous year s event Pull in new families to join the work Align event details with purposes Involve learning, relationships and the study Include children and their thinking Publicize the event (posters, notes, email, afternoon meeting) Document the event (photo, video, notes)

Discovery A Hosts Purpose: To celebrate each Discovery s project work and kickoff the open enrollment period Event: Open House Date: March 19, 2014 (Evening Event) Discovery A children, Open House March 19, 2014 Join teachers to plan the event Assist teachers on the day of the event to set up or clean up Help address postcards to guests

Discovery B Hosts Purpose: To come together with the three subjects to honor diversity of gender, age, color, race, family composition, culture or any way that makes for a perspective. Event: Diversity Luncheon Date: February 12, 2014 (Day Event) Discovery B children, Diversity Luncheon February 12, 2014 Join teachers to help plan the event Brainstorm ideas for the event Organize performances for the school audience that depict diverse talents and cultures Make fliers Recruit volunteers Set up luncheon Clean up luncheon

Discovery C Hosts Purpose: To gather as a community to promote families through Hopes and Dreams Event: Ice Cream Social Date: September 18, 2013 (Evening Event) Join teachers to plan the event Set up- organize tables and benches in gym, set out chairs and garage cans outside, set out information on white boards around school entrances and posters Manage donations (supplies and monetary) Clean up- gather up things and bring back inside, take down white boards and posters Photographers willing to photograph the event and/or take family photos Discovery C children, Ice Cream Social September 18, 2013 Families have their family pictures taken, record their hopes and dreams for their children and join together with other families to enjoy ice cream.

Discovery D Hosts Purpose: Promote the image of the child as an individual and in a group Event: Portfolio Day Date: April 23, 2014 (Day Event) Discovery D children, Portfolio Day April 23, 2014 Volunteer in classrooms to help prepare artifacts for portfolios Talk to new families about your past experiences at the Portfolio Event Share what the event means to you Help plan the event with the teachers, set up or clean up

Discovery E Hosts Purpose: To promote and celebrate the image of the child through final documentation Event: Spaghetti or Italian Dinner Date: June 2, 2014 (Evening Event) Discovery E children, Italian Dinner June 2, 2014 Invite extended family to view children s work Cook food in the school kitchen for all to eat Help clean up the kitchen afterward

Discovery F Hosts Purpose: To promote and celebrate the image of fifth grade children. Event: 5 th Grade Graduation Date: June 6, 2014 (Day Event) Discovery F children, 5 th Grade Graduation June 6, 2014 Planning fifth grade celebration: Coordinating the celebration location details, collecting money and arranging lunch for the day. Organizing the reception: Securing and setting up the cake, punch, paper products Setting up for the reception: Beautifying the dining room for the reception Graduation ceremony: Setting up the gym for visitor seating and a slideshow presentation
